Manzar, much more actually. I'm not sure if it's infinite or not, but that's not the point. Colors in rainbow change continuously rather than being partially constant. And all of these 6 or 7 colored rainbows are just symbolism. And different cultures depict rainbow differently. For example, in Russia classic rainbow is drawn with 7 colors. As far as I know, in America it has 6. I don't know much about other cultures, but you get the point.

It's still wrong. your eyes do perceive violet as "purplish" even when there's no red around. I've heard that shorter wavelengths do actually mildly activate the long wavelength (red) cones in your eyes. It could also be the fact that very short wavelengths activate the shortest wavelength cones in your retinas without the usual level of activation of the mid wavelength cones that are also activated by blue light.
(normal human eyes have 3 different cones with different wavelengths, but they're not a simple Red,Green,Blue additive as they're often described.)

It's true that cones aren't as simple as most people think. As you said, you *can* see a purplish hue *without* red light (although it's a kind of dark, blueish purple).
People should look up cone responsiveness graphs. To be fair, I didn't know that cones worked this way for a long time, but I kinda feel like if minutephysics is gonna make a video about this, then should have done better research. Then again, maybe they did their best and this just slipped through the cracks.
As a side note, some *cameras* don't have the slight high-wavelength sensitivity in the red "cone" sensor, so photos taken with those cameras might make the upper end of the spectrum *seem* pure blue, but that's just the camera's fault; your eyes will still see a slight purplish hue.

Throughout this video I was trying to imagine what a brand new colour would look like.
I failed
I agree on indigo being silly, but if you've ever used a prism under ideal conditions, there is most certainly a distinct purple there. The fact that it doesn't show up in all photos has more to do with camera sensors than it does with actually lack of purple-appearing light. Our "red" cones actually have some sensitivity to very short wavelengths (when "blue cone" sensitivity is tapering off), which explains it.
Our red cones do not have sensitivity in that range.
or even if they DID have any sensitivity for any particular range, when there's any kind of overlap with the blue cones, the green ones will get excited even more than the average of those red and blue. No resulting purple in that case.
The peak color of sensitivity of our "red" cones is actually lemon yellow, which is why I prefer to think of the cones as "Lemon, Lime and Blueberry". What we call "red" is perceived when the Lime and Lemon cones are stimulated in a specific ratio, a ratio which remains constant near the long-wavelength end of the spectrum making red an easily identifiable color. The same ratio is also approached at the opposite end of the spectrum, albeit with very weak sensitivity, and along with some stimulation of the Blueberry cones. This would explain the dim but distinct purple band observed by Rob Brown.
@@christopherstoney4154 Yes, unfortunately the most common explanations act as if eyes perceive R+G+B purely additively, analogous to how a display produces the colours, really there's also some subtractive effects, where you sense colours past the peak sensitivities by the lack of overlap with the other receptors.

Update: I bought a prism and you 100% can see violet. It's arguably stronger and a wider band than blue and cyan. I did some research and the reason it looks red is because your red cones are triggered by light in the bluest frequencies. It's an error your cones make. Modern cameras imitate this by letting the red sensor get triggered by short wavelengths. Old pictures of blacklights and tanning beds are blue. But your current smartphone camera will show them as violet. So will your eyes.

Red cones have an absorbance peak around 400 nm. Violet light actually looks like a mixture of red and blue light to people, because it activates both the red and blue cones. If you doubt this, get a cheap LED UVA (395nm) flashlight and observe the color.

Violet can also be is also combination of blue and red. The red cones are sensitive also to blue. Computer displays are based on red, green and yellow. There is no way they could produce violet light, yet they can show violet - because it is combination of blue and a little of red. if you then increase red, you get a more reddish version of violet i.e. purple or magenta. There is no single wavelength that can produce it.

There is another way for your eye to see purple in a rainbow without supernumerary rings, the red cone in the human eye actually has a small spike in sensitivity deep in the blue end of the spectrum. This means you can activate both blue and red signals at the same time which looks like purple to humans.
Whenever i say "what's the difference between cyan and blue", people just say that its the same color (but i know that cyan is bright blue)

@@susanf7237 All of the colors in the Pride flag/Rainbow represent something, or at least did to Gilbert Baker, that were related to sexuality. Green is assosciated with Nature, and most people within and even outside of the LGBT community believe homosexuality is, to some extent, natural. The original use of the rainbow is irrelevant, since it's an occurrence of nature it can be interpreted as many things.

Since the rainbow is just a splitting of the light that travels through the atmosphere, if it contained gamma rays that means the light that hit us would also contain gamma rays, which meant death.
and yes, higher up in the atmosphere there is ionizing radiation but most rainbow lenses are below that point where it gets filtered out.
Also i doubt light coming from the sun lost so much energy as to become microwave, even we humans radiate infrared, so idk.
