Cancelling a project even if it is restarted is a horrendously expensive thing to do. And as with Net Zero it was also a Manifesto pledge agreed by all the parties so in this case it is a thousand percent anti-democratic. Trust Murdoch's Goons not to point that out.

In the first-world West things are very expensive because wages are high and people get paid for things.
The expense thing is a smoke screen for the Tory realisation that HS2 with lessen the wealth gap between the south and the north. The thought of which makes their blood run even colder.

@@toi_techno You have a deluded view on why there is a wealth gap its sadly not fixable with an over priced railway. What extra high paying jobs will be in the north????????

Yep - the whole political class wanted it - they saw it as some big infrastructure vanity project. That is why I don't think it will get cancelled - just delayed at best.

Whether HS2 is extended to Manchester might be debatable, but whether it comes all the way into Euston is not. Only a complete imbecile would leave what's meant to be a high speed inter city link on the outskirts of a city, where getting there would wipe out any benefit. This is doubly so when one considers how much work and expense has already gone into bringing the link into Euston.

I wonder why this project didn't start in the North, a cynic might say it started in the South just in case they ran out of money and the southern infrastructure would be improved again while the North loses out again.

HS2 should have started in Manchester. The inward investment would have benefitted the North and help levelling up in this country. London has already had cross rail and two extra underground station costing (40 billion) twice their original budget. It is financial discrimination for the North.

Nobody has mentioned the price of a ticket because when compared to going through the tunnel it's obviously not after working classes money. It will be an exclusive option with a premium cost. Scrap it all and make a road or normal railroad.
