    The new queen I ordered from barnyard bees is hands down one of my best that I have. She's filling these frames up wall to wall with brood. Thank you for the educational videos and the great queen. I would definitely recommend to anyone on getting queens or bees from Barnyard bees.

    Good deal bud. Sure wish I didn’t live out here in the desert of south Texas. I have a weak fall flow. Making splits makes me excited though. Had an Africanized swarm show up last weekend trying to overtake a hive. I put an end to that. Keep them videos coming!

    • @RJones-mx2oi

      How did prevent the African bee takeover?

    • @chrisbgarrett
      @chrisbgarrett Před 6 lety +4

      de Vivre Jones ,I went outside and with flashlight looked for the queen at dust. It was the attack swarm. The next morning I went out there and they were gone. I worked a few hives and then the African swarm came back. Small,maybe softball or tad bigger. The bees were very small,I found the queen was trying to enter the hive and had a couple guard bees stinging her. I squished the situation and put her so her others could see. Then I let them have some clothes detergent in a spray bottle. What bees were left went away. The attack squad planned on just choking my hive’s entrance until they could just come in and take over the box with the inside bees dead. Life cycle is cruel,Africanized bees are worse. I don’t video yet but should to show the traits to look out for. This was on a 5 frame nuc with small entrance and a robber screen on it. Easy for Africans to just sit and cover hole up and 100 deg heat to kill them. But I feed with a hive top feeder and have large vent holes. My bees are ok. Sorry for going long. Chris

    On the Nuc that didn't have the queen. When you put the two frames with no wax, we saw like a walking cascade of worker bees coming over the right side. Is that because they didn't have a queen in that nuc, and were starting to think about finding one? How do you move a nuc to the other yard that doesn't have a queen in it - how do they stay happy, if they don't have a queen?

      Todd Achten, they only pull plastic foundation early in year.
      Put a starter strip frame and put 1-1 sugar to them. (One gallon of water to 8lbs of sugar) 1-12lbs if you have time to mix it good. Put that frame between a brood and honey frame. You will be amazed how fast they can draw comb.

    Just love you place and all your critters! I am a beginner...have a question: Queen disappeared 11/14. Colony raised queen cells center of frame. 2 virgin queens hatched 11/29. Now what happens because there are no drones to mate with? What should I do? If I do splits, will the workers with virgin queen survive and take care of her during Winter?
    I live in San Diego, CA, so weather during Winter isn't too bad....no snow but sometimes gets below freezing. Thanks so much!

    If I were to start a hive is there a time when its ready to split or is it only when the bees are ready? And what's the point of splits lol? Is it just to create more hives or does it have something to do with overpopulation of a single hive?

    You're south of my location. Do you have an upper entrance for wintering. Are they just five frame or do you place another nuc on top for wintering? Our winters are cold and need ventilation or the condensation will kill the colony.

      Oh David lol. I have to call BS on that one. You have built a bee business, while working 12 hour night shifts, raising a family, doing CZcams videos, going to the gym, and making your own wood components for your apiaries and I have no idea what else. But lazy? No no - I think most people call that being tired. Exhausted. Knackered. Normal consequence of your lifestyle. Which is actually OK but you do need to take an occasional break!

    • @julieenslow5915
      @julieenslow5915 Před 6 lety +3

      Good Potion
      Its not that hard. winterized nucs just means its a nucleus hive (5 frame Langstroth type) that has been prepared for winter. Preparations for winter vary depending on where you live and what your conditions are (typically). All of the hives shown in Barnyard Bees use Langstroth type frames, he uses a variety of hive bodies though. Did that help?
      Generally David answers questions but sometimes you can just read comments to get the answers. Everyone in the beekeeper community is very helpful. I'm not even a beekeeper but I am so fascinated I think I do about 10-12 bee videos a day for a year now! lol

    • @Dolphineater200
      @Dolphineater200 Před 6 lety

      Oh David, lol. Don't encourage me. I am trying to stop myself but when I love a subject I love to help. I ask a lot of questions. People answer them, not always the channel owner. I feel grateful. I want to return the favor. I know you cant keep up with all the people on your video list as I am one of thousands going through all your old videos. So when I see something that is 2 years ago and someone asked a simple question and boom, I answer. Clearly, I have gotten so I am answering them when its a five minute old video now! Bad habit.
      Fact is, I would love to be a beekeeper right now, am trying to figure out how I can live in an apartment (no bees allowed!) and find a place I could experiment with being a beekeeper, I've never let disabilities hold me back before. Failing that, is there some way I could help local beekeepers. Been watching the Ted X Talks about urban beekeeping. Looking into that now.
      Do be careful, looks like Florence is shifting southerly. Mr. Ed lost an apiary due to flooding, I would hate it if hurricane Florence hurt the bees. They have enough challenges at the moment. Of course I am praying for everyone, all the people, pets, livestock, homes, businesses, etc. not just the bees and beeks.

      Julie Enslow I am in the same boat as you, as far as the urban living and wanting to do beekeeping goes. Right now I’m just asking friends a coworkers if they have any land that they wouldn’t mind a hive or two on. Also, there is a local honey business near me, and someone else in my town that has an apiary. It never hurts to ask around. Best of luck to you!

    @FloryJohann Před 6 lety

    David, I got a question. It is not concerning this video.
    We have a little hurricane sitting in our back yard that will make landfall right before or around this weekend.
    If this hurricane is coming to our front steps, should I keep the entrance to the hive closed?
    I will be starting to tie the hives down tomorrow.

    • @FloryJohann
      @FloryJohann Před 6 lety

      I got the entrance tilted slightly so the water can run out just in case, that is the way I set it up from the beginning. At least I should not have to worry about flooding since I am sitting on a 30 foot hill.
      Thank you so much for your reply, that meant a lot to us.
      Usually we get a double whammy here. Hurricane and Tornadoes. It is one or the other or both of them.
      Around here, stores ran out of bottled water Monday already and it looks like that gasoline is going to be a shortage by tomorrow.

    What happens to all the bees thst come back home after going out for pollen and come back and home is moved??

    • @chrisbgarrett
      @chrisbgarrett Před 6 lety

      Funlaughinlady, they eat all the pollen and nectar by themselves. No,they look around for a while at right location of their hive,then look to hive on right or left to see if they moved and didn’t tell her. Another colony will readily except a forger bee with bags of groceries. They rarely die when carrying food into a new colony.
