- Igor Ivanov first became internationally famous in 1979, when he defeated World Champion Anatoly Karpov in a superb game from the USSR Spartakiad team tournament. This likely earned him the privilege of his first international travel, very difficult for Soviet citizens to obtain during those years.
Year later he became even more famous for defecting in a dramatic way. In 1980, after playing in Cuba as part of the Soviet team, he made his wild dash to freedom from the KGB in Canada during a refueling stop in Gander, Newfoundland.
In his most exciting game, Ivanov defeated IM Vitaly Zaltsman in New York 1983 in the Tarrasch defense. After organizing an energetic king-side attack he then sacrifices both rooks and a queen. It became an emotional roller coaster with the powerful white pawns finally swarming the black king. Ivanov considered it one of his best games.

P.S. The puzzle is from Mikhail Tal's game! Strangely Tal missed the winning line, you can do better! 😊

Yes I remember, Tal played this game against a chess club!! :)
It's insane how pawns can be strong. A great game as always :)
I am from Quebec where he defected. I had the chance to play blitz against him in a tournament. We loved him, he was such an exciting player. He also shared his chess wisdom which was amazing.

@@LeventK why given to me 1 , I was second , you were the first
@@vivaanjain2260 Understand this.
I liked this game a lot. Honestly it made me feel better to see good players making these kind of mistakes (and it made the game much more exciting).
Time is the bigest opponent of all!
Thanks suren 😊
Nice video
Pity, it could hv been a quick and almost brilliant death of the Black King, but become very messy and clumsy. Time, as always, is the hardest opponent.
Haha.. A very interesting game indeed.. So funny how in time trouble every one made two critical blunders
I just can Say thanks for all your beautiful videos you share. -indonesian chess lover-
