So cool! My parents were right in that, growing up, they would say, "Things back there were built to last!" Your video and that adorable machine are proof of that!
So WILD, too, in that Bernadette Banner has a recent video (Investigating One of the Oldest Victorian Sewing Machines! 1876 Wilcox & Gibbs Chainstitch) and what blows me away is that Singer basically adapted that machine from the late 19th century (for a children's toy) but that they both work incredibly!!
I bet that was super inspiring, for a kid or anyone interested in sewing, to have a cool, super solid/ portable and sturdy machine like that! GREAT FIND! You've got me wanting to search eBay for that item (that I don't need and probably shouldn't want) - but's its so COOL!

Yeah, it's so well built and I really appreciate toys that aren't dumbed down. This machine was built with the full expectation that it would be used for years and passed down among siblings. Modern toy sewing machines fall apart if you look at them sideways.

With a chain stitch machine like that, to take the fabric out of the machine, you can pull some slack in the upper thread (like you were doing), then cut the thread above the fabric and pull the fabric out of the machine. The hook on the bottom will draw the thread tail to the back side of the fabric through the last chain as you pull the fabric away, which will secure the end of the stitch.

They're fun to play around with, but I imagine a child learning to sew on one would be more frustrated than if they just used a regular machine.

I think Singer should start making these again.

They're so simple and so reliable. Nothing like the junky toy sewing machines that are coming out these days.

Problem is if they did they would be plastic and break , metal would cost them to much to make so the price would be too high , for example look at there full size machines for sewing ,,,,,,all plastic disposable , this is why i collect antique and vintage machines .

I have a SewHandy 50D. I found the instructions online, but there is no bobbin, and the spool pin is missing. It is electric, but I canonly here it buzzing.
My sewing machine guy said it wasn't a real machine, more for display. If we could get it going, I bet it will sew.

I love that wee guy, very cool. Have you considered hand stitching garments? I made a shirt that way, about to start another. Its very simple, extremely portable, very relaxing. Lets you sew in shared spaces so its a lot more sociable. Could be a good option for travelling. Its slower than machine stitch, but if you used a running stitch it would take a similar amount of time as your handcrank samples in this video. Backstitch is slower.

I've done hand sewing mostly for adding in linings or stitching down collars. That's a good suggestion to try hand sewing a garment though, I'm going to try it out.

What a great find! I may need to keep my eyes open for one. Loved the video.
I was just though Oklahoma a couple of months ago. Discovered Braum's there. Now my favorite place for breakfast or dinner. Great hamburgers and ice cream. Safe travels.

We have that exact model but it birdnests underneath and won't stitch. Was hoping for some insight as to how it pulls the stitch back up from underneath.

Hi I just took my sewing machine out to use with my 8 year old daughter. I used to use this myself as a little girl. I’m frustrated though because I think I’m missing the tension thing. Mine if just a long piece of metal coming out and it keeps getting clogged underneath. Like it’s knotting up. I’m looking for someone that could possibly help me with this. If you could, that would be great.

I'm trying, I have trouble tying off the thread tails at the beginning and ends of the stitch. My hands are kinda fumbly. Makes me appreciate backstitching more.

@@DetailDisoriented I'm not sure with this one, but I know the Singer 50D electric, if you just keep going at the end of the fabric, it will make a chain stitch after the fabric ends, and you can just cut that. Thought I'd mention in case it's helpful. Another video I recently watched was saying with a chain stitch, to unpick it, you start from the end (on the top side) - I wasn't sure if that meant that it can't come undone from the beginning? If so that would be nice so you wouldn't have to tie it at the beginning either!

    • @DetailDisoriented
      @DetailDisoriented  Před 2 lety +1

There's a little switch with a rounded end just in front of the needle under the bed of the machine. You pull that switch toward you or push it away to change the stitch length.
