    When humanity faces a future that sounds like a Hollywood disaster movie, people switch off.. people stick their heads in the sand, and they keep it there. That almost universal trait will bring about the precise events that people are too afraid to contemplate. What we need is the intellectual and emotional bravery to face all the destructive complexity of what we are causing on the planet. Unfortunately, capitalism itself sits as a huge obstacle on that long road.

    My understanding of this issue is that it takes decades for the full impact of greenhouse gases to be realized, from the date they are released into the atmosphere, so as bad as things are now (for humans) much worse conditions are "baked in" so to speak. It is tempting to just say "we're screwed" and leave it at that, but as long as we are presently existing, we are obliged to accept and cope with the world as it is day to day. My intuition is guiding me to a more nomadic, and minimalistic lifestyle, ie. summer of 2017 wildfire and high temps in the Northeast, and B.C. so I moved to the southwest, now in 2018 perhaps the Oregon coast will be my refuge. In 2015 I made the wrong call and was driven out of Lake co. Cal, by wildfire, from which I found comfort and safety at Mt. Shasta. The days of staying in one place have come to an end, just ask the folks in Bellair or Houston, etc. It simply makes no sense to put down roots in any apparently stable community, when we know that if the climate is unstable then any place you choose is subject to sudden widespread devastation.

      Depending on how high the greenhouse gasses go, we could tip the planet's atmosphere in to a Venus like situation. Where it's ability to self regulate is not possible. The idea that the planet will "be ok" is not founded on any thing tangible. It's uncharted territory in terms of the speed and rise in changes to the atmosphere.

    As much as humans like to pat themselves on the back as rational creatures, we aren't. We are creatures that rationalize our actions, after the fact. We are shortsighted and greedy given our narrow time of personal existence, and we are not particular special in these regards. The will of life wants it all, and when it gets the opportunity (say with a primate with an unusually large brain) it goes for broke, and nearly always loses.

    It is a complex problem, not easy to wrap my head around. I am suspicious of the motives of some supporters of climate change initiatives, like Noam Chompsky, who is left of Bernie Sanders and hates Capitalism. But I hear there is about a 95% consensus among climate change scientists that not only is climate change real, but is mostly caused by people. The climate has always changed during earth's history, but we have been told that today's rate of change is unprecedented, and I think I believe it. We have already passed peak oil production in the world, that is, no matter how much we drill, we will not receive over more oil than we do now. We will have to turn to renewable energy sources as oil runs out anyway, I think we need to expedite the process as much as possible. The problem cannot be solved without public support, big business, and government involvement. But individuals can help. Put solar on your roof. Buy smaller cars, or electric if you can afford it. Take less jet trips. Let your representatives know you support the rapid development of renewable energy. Even BP and Chevron are looking into developing renewable energy sources. They have been part of the problem, but they can be part of the solution. If we transition to renewable energy as a national priority, maybe we can turn this around in time.

    Nuclear physics and geology are my fields, so I am not a super "climate scientist" like Cher and Noam, but apparently I know a couple of things they do not. The sun is the main driver of climate on earth, period. The sun has been in a Grand Solar Maximum for about one hundred years. The earth warmed during this period, but now the Grand Solar Maximum has ended. We are now are in a period of solar minimum, Cycle 24 was 50% weaker than cycle 23 and NASA says cycle 25 will be about 50% weaker than cycle 24. That means the earth will now cool, as we all seen over the last winters as we slid to the bottom of cycle 24, and since we are just bouncing along the bottom of cycle 24 this winter is going to be worse, it is unavoidable. Cycle 25 will be bad, cold weather crop losses, flooding, shortened growing seasons and amazing hail will no doubt lead to famines. The scary part is no one is giving a forecast for cycle 26 except Zharkova and a couple in that camp, and if cycle 26 is not a rebound our civilization may be in grave danger.

    Hello
    We are an environmental movement organization composed of Yongin Elementary School teachers in South Korea.
    We want to educate children about the seriousness of the climate and environmental problems.
    Can we use some of your videos to make educational contents? (It will be 3 or 4 seconds)
    It's only for classes in school, not for commercial use.
    We are looking forward to your reply. Thanks.

    It is natural causes - not human activities mostly. The Co2-gas that is supposed to be bad for the climate is a natural "gas" that exists with or without people activities. It is a gas that is A MUST for alll life to exist in this world - it is the gas of life. The atmosphere has very little of this gas in the atmosphere - less than 1 percent of the total "gas". And the atmosphere has had different levels of co2 during different times.
    Historicly we have had great up and downs in the climate temperature. And the serious scientists know this - it is just the politicians and journalists that change the facts and give wrong information to the people. Many scientist might also live on feeding this lie to the people - because if they do - they get more funds and money for research. It can not possibly make a great difference with a gas that is so tiny in the atmosphere. By the way - David Attenborough is a zoolog - not a climate expert.

    You can't reduce climate change until the elephant in the room is addressed and that is basic greed ... All governments focus on growth of economies and making money there lies the problem .. People aspire to have more material things and society judges a person as good by what they have earned through work... The solution would be for everybody to live very basic lives .but I fear personal ego and greed of people will trump voluntary sacrifice.. It will be the climate itself that forces the issue of who ends up with what's left ! .

Young today will never be so old that they can't quite reach the toilet in time, loose all their teeth or forget what part of the body underpants goes on in relation to socks whatever they are good for... That will never happen to you. You probably won't have to pay off your loans or worry much about any kind of maintainence cost of your house or your car...and you also got to live in the most intense and interesting time, the end times of our species and quite possibly most other complex life on the planet as well. And you would have pooped out eventually anyway. Life is 100% deadly. Always have been. It's a good deal to be alive now. What a ride!! Please be nice and kind to people around you. Its going to get worse..mass migration of the heat states has been occurring in south America. children are dying i Guatemala, el Salvador, Honduras from crop failure and lack of food. A close friend of mine, a two time jeprody round of champion and a Canadian lives in LA and he is depressed what is happening to the planet. He is from Yukon BC and the melting of permafrost is now releasing huge amounts of methane and Co2 into the atmosphere. Washington state has one of the most temperate climates in the country has seen a huge increase in climate refuges who left California for the heat waves and also...were priced out of the state. California also has the highest homelessness rate in the country.

  • @TheEEStudent
    @TheEEStudent Před 7 lety

    Methane is overrated: The Earth's sea and atmosphere has plenty of methanophiles. This is so because methane is a viable source of energy, so if methane level rises, so will the methanophiles multiply. These creatures keep the methane concentration in the atmosphere at around 0.0002% even though that the sea concentration is 0.00036% and this had been that way for ages. In turn, they can be and are consumed as part of the usual food chain, so the result of the polar caps melting would be a relatively low net impact of methane on the environment. Carbon dioxide is the real threat. Chemically dismantling Carbon dioxide is very expensive energy-wise, and plants do it by photosynthesis which demands sunlight. Mankind does not have any efficient way of doing so, apart from planting green plants. So basically, seeding Earth's oceans with green algae and undertaking forestation seriously overland, should do the trick and could resolve the global warming problem for a very long time. Although there are other problems that need to be addressed as well. There isn't any "silver bullet" solution to all the problems. But claiming something like "the human race is doomed because of the methane that will enter the atmosphere", only shows inability to do your own research.
