    Thank you so much for repairing my amp Trevor!!! It was a night and day transformation in the sound quality. I can’t recommend Trevor’s Bench services enough.

      No problem, hope you enjoy it. I'll be starting the tuner in a couple of days. The vid for that will be posted in about 4 weeks

    JVC overlooked by the brand hunters. JVC made some fantastic equipment. I enjoy the turntables. Victor gear is rare in North America, but top quality. Banana jacks are always a nice upgrade on these units when the spring terminals are kaput. To each their own. Those wafer switches I use metal polish on. At least these are easy to access. Yamaha are a nightmare scenario. Trev, you kind of gypped us on the footage of the relay rework and the mute switch rework and the terminal install. Let it slide this time.

    What a far cry from their plastic efforts of the 90s. That's a quality piece. Really admire your work.. it's a joy to see things re used and made good and the quality of these things was so beyond modern production.

    I agree w your assessment of what killed those caps, some kind of petrochemical got in there and swelled the rubber end caps.
    That is a beast of an amplifier, with a serious power supply. I feel your pain arranging it around on your bench.

    I became so enamored with the JA-S71 amplifier that I bought another one just to have it as a backup. Also has two tuners JT-V71, cassette deck KD75 and record player JVC QL-F4. All original and works perfectly. Both amplifiers are used in different rooms. Fun fact The Swedish Institute of Technology has measured the power of the amplifier and it delivers 105 watts of power even though it is specified for 80 watts. They can be seen on my CZcams channel. Maybe I should find someone in Sweden who can recap them.
    Trevor thanks for a fantastic YT channel.

    Most would find the single component, replace it, and send it out.

    I've not run across bulging caps on the board side like that. Interesting. Beautiful integrated amp. JVC made good stuff back in the day, but like most other companies did during the mid 80's, they went to black plastic and cheaper designs while living on their laurels from the past. Many went out of business because of it. Bean counters have destroyed more good companies than you can shake a stick at. HH Scott and Fisher come to mind. Thanks for another interesting video!

      It's not the bean counters that destroy companies. It's the executives who dictate that the company save money and order the accountants to cut budgets. They are the problem.

    Thank you for your time on this much needed maintenance adventure. This amp looks like a very well built machine; the internal layout looks stellar for the technician, with the exception of a bottom cover. What's that old saying?, "They don't build 'em like that anymore." Please let us know how this unit sounds! Thanks again.

    Looks very pretty on the outside, however what is on the inside is a nightmare, JVC, Appreciate this Trevor, why...........because it is my most hated mfg from prior experience of their failed attempt with quality control and reliability. Power board buried under Tone board, not too bright. Very much enjoyed the tear down of speaker wire connectors. Relays are the greatest thing invented, sorry my Celestion Ditton 66 speakers are pretty important to me. Cheap Elec Capacitors as always, I am more to think something got spilled (alcohol beverage) into that, I do not see any type of oil doing damage like that.

    I notice you changed the orange caps out for film caps? curious why you used film caps in their place. xraytony gave an interesting chat in a recent video about how using the film caps instead of electrolytics can change the sound.

    • @TrevorsBench
      @TrevorsBench  Před rokem

      Yes, I replaced some low value electrolytics with film. I believe they are much more stable and reliable. The difference in sound quality is debatable, just like was pointed out in Tony's video.

    I can't believe I gave one of these away when I was a teenager... I found one of these amps at a recycling facility here in Denmark, and took it home on the back of my bike. Sound in both channels, It still had the square cover and all it's switches. Took it with me to be semi permanently used for playing music at a frequently youth assembly location. My dumbass gave it away to another teen because I was to lazy to carry it home after the assemblies were over and done for...

    Have this amp as well, and had it serviced awhile back here locally in Ohio for the same issue - that is no sound out of one channel. Now I'm getting some occasional static, thumps and hum. Had anyone else had this issue, and if so, what worked to resolve it?

    Dilemma: you never know what value a cap had when installed. For me a 470 µF cap that measures 468 is most likely bad. These often go for 10% or more above rating when new, so my guess is that it has already lost 10% and steadily on its way out.
