I started following Nascar in the mid to late 80's. I liked the Alabama Gang but I was more of a Chevy fan. I respected Dale Sr. more that I liked him. I became a Gordon fan because was about my age and moved to Chevy when he left the Busch series. I began to like Dale Sr. through the Earnhardt and Gordon rivalry. I wondered how Dale Jr. would grow up after his father died. He seemed to have a wild side and I worried he go completely crazy and have enough money that his friends would not hold him accountable. The move to Hendrick may have been the best thing for Dale Jr. and Rick Hendrick. Dale Jr. did not win a bunch of championships but the man he became may have been a bigger accomplishment. He walked away from racing when he felt it was the right time because of his health and he seems at peace with that decision. I think his dad would have been proud of the man he turned out to be more than if had won a bunch of championships and had been a complete jackass.
I like all the comments about him being just a regular joe. Gimme a break. Regular folks dont get fitted for thousand dollar suits. A regular feller has one suit that he bought a Sears bc he had to go to a wedding or a funeral.
