  • This is a demo of Torn.Eb shortwave receiver from WW2.
This has a great mechanical design. See it on the film.
The sound is also very good. Hear it on the film.

Extremelly well designed and crafted radio equipment with only 2 to 3 tube types interchangeable between a lot of diferent radio brands as Tfk, Lorenz, Siemens, etc and, even almost 80 y'rs after, perfectly functional !

One of the things that can be observed in this excellent video is the influence of German design in Russian military communications gear after the war. The view of the chassis brought me to my R311 Russian set and even a smaller chinese 339 set that reflects the same basic design but in a solid state receiver.

What it is also worth to mention is that this Tornister-Empfänger b is using direct heated cathods. They are more noisy that indirect heated ones, but after turning on it takes only around 2 seconds to be heated up and be ready for use.
In fact the Tornistor-Empfänger b is made of 4 tubes RV2P800 (HF-Pentode), also called "curlers" because of their design.
To get the right power out of a 2V battery there was also an inverter available, "Wechselrichter EW.b" which was typically powered by the 2V 38Ah lead acid battery "Sammler 2B38". (B stands for "Blei", german for lead).
My father had to of these Receivers. As a young man i've "played" several years (maybe between the years 1982 and 1986) with such a receiver, it made a lot of fun to use it. Even at that time i was always fascinated by the incredible design of this device.

Thank you for excellent video! I have a Torn.E.b which was acquired by a relative during his stint overseas during WW II. It was passed on down through the family and, as the family ham radio buff, I have had it on the shelf for many years. Got it out today, took some pictures and found your web site and here I am. Fantastic! It is a wonderfully built radio - mine has paint loss and the front panel labels are very difficult to read but the interior is in great shape. I am seriously considering building a simple power supply and seeing if I can get it working. Again thanks for the information.

Poor old guy! He should have got one of these German Masterpieces.
My DL6 friend in Münich tells me that Germany had no access to quartz during WW2 so they had to design receivers without it! They didn't do so badly! I'd love one of these but Helge Fykse has cornered the market. Bit cruel to keep them all in captivity! Should release them back into the wild.
