  • Can We Find Our DREAM HOME in Scotland? Try booking your next trip with Magic for free - www.magictravel.ai/?r=kingingit
    This week is the first Episode of our new Chapter - our journey to finding our dream home in Scotland and a new home renovation series. Our goal is to find a fairly small renovation project for us to work on and really make our own. We don't mind knocking down walls and giving it a lick of paint but if we need to add an extension, we may need some help!
    So we rent a car and drive up to the Scottish highlands to view three incredible properties. We have been looking on real estate websites for the last three years and know this might take a while..
    But we show you around all three giving full house tours, two being rather large victorian detached houses and the last one, 'the wild card' is an old school house in need of major renovation.
    I can't believe soon enough we'll be first time home buyers and eventually home owner! We couldn't be more excited to have our own space!
    See how we get on as new house hunters and if we find our forever home.

      In short keep looking! That said, Wild Card. Sure it will be a huge renovation project, though it does have the best property. Get an engineer to look at it for structural problems. What ever place you get, make sure there isn’t any mold…

    As an American Real Estate agent and an Interior Designer I have one big advice to keep in mind. You can change just about anything about a house and the land around it, but you cannot change it's location. 1 and 2 will never make you happy. 3 is the best out of the lot because you can take your time to do renovations while you live in the second building. I think you have a lot more shopping to do before you find a place that feels just right. Just remember that you can always put in furniture and wallpaper and such. But the place you call home is where your heart can be at peace!

    • @katanderson22
      @katanderson22 Před 9 měsíci +14

      Agree. You can change about anything with a house... but you can't change neighbours or neighbourhood. Location, Location, Location. 3 I think is their best bet out of the ones shown but I don't think it's a complete fit.

      I absolutely agree with this. When you’re thinking of your home, think of the community and purpose of where you’ll be versus what the house physically is.

      Except that's totally untrue about any properties that are category A or B listed in Scotland. Location is key but depends on the age of the home and most of these properties are older than America!

    Best advice I ever got when I was looking for a house was, "don't settle." I looked at many houses for months before I found "the one." I've lived here for 23 years and I still love my house. I'm never jealous of other people's grander and newer houses. I found my home.

      If you need privacy and quiet don’t settle until you find the one. Sure we all need to work to budget but if you compromise on the top priorities you will want to move before too long. Home is a feeling.
      Rural in Scotland is easy but if you want facilities close by it does up the cost.

    Having bought an older fixer upper home I can tell you that for every issue you can see there are 10 you can't see. Example: In taking the ugly wallpaper off in the kitchen I found a hole in the chmney that had been stuffed with newspaper and covered up with said wallpaper. Not only did we then have to pay someone to reline the entire chimney, but had to realize that had I decided I liked the wallpaper and left it, we may have died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Do I regret doing it? No. Not at all. But it took us about 10 years to finish the home a bit at a time as we could afford it. So I understand you both. But Aimee if your man can't see what you see in it then he will only become resentful of the hours and hours of work needed. Especially if the cost keeps you from doing the traveling you still want to do. My only advice is to find a home that you BOTH fall in love with. Then the work and the expense won't matter as much.

Not to mention, think of Emon and Bec who’s cabin started out rough and they’ve made a beautiful home. It’ll all work out, you deserve a home that makes you happy. Best of luck and lots of love ❤

    Just some advice-I'm about to sell my second "forever home". It's beautiful, 40 acres of forest and I never thought I'd leave. But things change, interests change, the locality changes. Chances are you will likely search for another "forever home" in the future. So, go for what you want (location, house, etc) for at least five years is my advice. It may work out forever, but you just never know. can't wait to see what you guys get up to!

    I’m with Craig about the weather and the facilities around the rural areas and I’m Scottish. If I was travelling I’d want a place I could drive back to easily (I.e. within a few miles of a major road). If I was moving that far north I’d go up and stay in the depth of winter to experience reality rather than the stunning scenery and amazing light of the summer. The light is grey at best in winter and daylight hours are few and less when it’s cloudy and rainy. However the scenery is very dramatic in winter and roads are so much quieter without the tourists. Good luck with your search. I hope you find your home wherever that may be.

  • @Rockingmyfifties
    @Rockingmyfifties Před 9 měsíci +81

    Suggestion: We bought a house this summer, thinking it was old but we would renovate her and make her beautiful. That’s where the suggestion part comes: We should’ve asked for a detailed air quality test. Those very specific test that tells you if there’s any mold in the home or asbestos which usually comes in old houses. The house documents specified there was no mold or asbestos but we eventually asked for tests after I got sick (it took 2 days) with rashes, migraine and respiratory difficulties. Now the home is dangerous but nothing made us believe it was. We can’t go in it or live there and we are now trying our best to deal with lawyers and the fact we are paying for a home we can’t live in and also paying for a second home we need to live in. So, my suggestion is; whatever the buyer tells you, how ever beautiful the home is, if she’s old, she could very well have a lot of mold that you can’t even see or smell. Anyway…have fun and I’m sure you’ll find your perfect nest. 😊

    I’m with Craig about the 3rd house…and renovations always cost at the VERY least 20% (usually more like 50%) than expected and take twice as long. If you are stretching to make the initial purchase….then you are going to be perpetually broke and living in a construction site for years to come. Some people like that sort of thing…so it’s really up to the individuals…but it’s not for everyone (def. not me) and when you are part of a couple it’s important not to put the other person in a position where they’ll be miserable.

    Number 3 all the way, if you were to make a series renovating it on youtube (highly popular) it would pay for itself and be yours exactly how you want it the first time without having to deal with redecorating which will inevitably cause more issues because of the unknown. Worst case scenario you'll always be able to flip it depending on how good of a renovation you do.

    My biggest advice for fellow work travelers looking for a house: Don't bite off too much of a project house. You'll stress yourselves out on the things left to finish while away from home. When your income is contingent on travel, like mine is, you'll end up resentful between choosing time on a project house and time away from making a paycheck. As such, expect to spend three times more than what you budget. The little odds and ends really stack up. Take your time and find something that checks all your boxes

    No question, has to be number 3 out of these options. The little cabin could be lived in while you do the renos on the main building - yes a lot of work and a big investment, but could be an incredible ROI in the future if you ever wanted to sell. Plus once the renos are done you can continue to rent out the cabin to help offset your mortgage. But really like how you're both representing both sides of such a big decision - the dreamer and inspo and then the logical and financial side of things. We know you'll make the best decision for you guys, and we will just be happy to be brought along for the adventure!

    Take your time. Location is number one, you can never change where it’s at. After that don’t get in over your head financially. If it’s livable and comfortable can you do projects over time, (decades not years). Don’t worry about making a quick decision. My husband and I looked for 6 months, and got a place we loved.
    When I became a widow I looked for 4 months to downsize. Loved my beautiful condo with a killer view for 12 years.

    I just loved the last house so much. Yes it would be a TON of work and a huge investment, but keep in mind that a lot of the work can be done over time. The little cabin seems beautiful and move in ready. The big house could be renovated overtime. I love it and think y’all would have a ton of fun. Not to mention the add rev from the renovation videos. lol.

    You're not a hands on kind of guy after seeing how little you would actually do on Custard. But obviously we all know for future youtube revenue you've already chosen the three year project and cliche transfer from travel content to renovation mishap content. You're doing the right thing. Can't wait to see more.

And since you asked , I wouldn’t choose any of these. I personally would keep looking. Just for the simple reason you both didn’t feel the same about any of these beautiful properties. Just keep in mind the more rural you are the harder it is to find good builders / tradesmen that are available, affordable and actually turn up when they are supposed to. A reno job in a rural location will take three times the amount of time to get done and finish. And about three times the cost so make sure it's a house you both seriously love.

    The search continues. Main roads are a no no. Safety first. A note about the last one. If you plan to rebuild like that assume you will pay double the price you budget for. Clearly the seller thought as you did and realized what a money pit it was. So, the search continues. Due diligence is the name of the game. Land rights, easements, taxes, flood zones, building codes, laws of the land. So much stuff. What is winter like? If you don't already know what it's like, it's good to know what you are in for. How exciting! Buying your forever home. It's a great feeling. Good luck! Be patient. Took us years to find our place.

    I know 3rd one is a mega renovation project but it looks more like my idea of "retreat for your mind and your body". You have very very handy Canadian friends and many followers who would love to have a working holiday with you. First one unfortunately loses with no garden and second one's train tracks and busy road is kind of off putting. But at the end Craig is also right that all the renovation can be overwhelming, may be too overwhelming. I hope you will find your forever home in a short while. But if takes time, it takes time. We are happy to follow you anywhere. ❤😘

    3 For sure, you can make videos of renovating an "abandoned house" for 1 or 2 years, which will potentially double the views on your CZcams channel. This can help you earn money from CZcams and even secure deals with companies that provide materials for renovation or construction. Plus, since you have a cottage house, you won't have to pay any rent. It's a great opportunity and you might not find a better deal.

    I’m so glad you are back!! This is a fun journey you’re on now! Thank you for taking us along 👍🏼. I don’t know that I would choose any of these houses. If I HAD to choose I’d choose the lemon 🍋 meringue. You’ll get used to the train and the road. Eventually you won’t hear them or they won’t bother you. They will just become part of the fabric of your new lives. But I have to say I think there is something better. Aimee your enthusiasm and ability to see the potential in each property is fun to watch. Craig your level head will get you into the right place. I can’t wait to see what you show us next week!! Absolutely loving this new series guys. It’s right up my alley. It would be good to know what they are asking for these homes to be able to help you decide. Don’t rush into the first place that wows you is the advice from someone who has bought many houses over the years in the UK and Canada. I’m with Amie on the last one even though it needed so much work on it because of the view and tranquility of the location. Good luck with the search. If you don’t find anything, wait till you come to Canada with Custard (assuming to Halifax) then go to Cape Bretton where you would surely find a place of your dreams at a fraction of the price. We live on the South Shore of Nova Scotia, so always willing to help out with that search.

    Cant believe I was randomly watching this and recognised no.3, The Old Schoolhouse, 2 mins down the road from us. My Uncle actually went to school there when it was in service. We're born and bred on Locheilside and despite working further afield, we still chose to build here and make it our permanent base.
    Your comment with regard the rain applies to the majority of the Scottish Highlands!! Its not any drier anywhere else! Also, where else do you get to watch the Harry Potter train go by from your garden...
    There are so many skilled local folk that could help you with the renovation, some very talented neighbours, you might want to consider a 2nd look...!

    As a Scot, don’t move to the wettest place in the country. East of Scotland is windier and cooler but drier (plus less midges). Peace, a loch and a wee bit of land would be my choice but I agree with Craig that #3 would be a money pit. Keep lookin’ guys. A few more weeks/months to find your dream forever home won’t make much difference in the big picture. All the best. The Highlands are gorgeous ❤🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥰
