Kraftwerk a partir de 1971 toma las bases de la electrónica concreta fluida que ya se estaba desarrollando en varios países y por diversos productores dónde Francia, Bélgica o EEUU que destacaban en evolucion y experimentación electrónica, solo por citar la escena Francesa: Jean M. Jarre (Freedom Day, Synthetizer Man, Poltergeist Party, Rain Forest Rap, Hipnose, Popcorn etc) todo ello en antes del 73, J.J. Perrey bajo el nombre de Pat Prilly (Coeur Synthetique, Altitude 1, Aerolite Alpha, Frontieres de Linconnu etc) avanzado notablemente frente al Krautrock y los limitados trabajos de Kraftwerk, C.D Jean, P. Henry, Terry R...entre otros, con moldes electrónicos en continua evolución, avance y variantes, el Krautrock y electro Dusseldorf de Kraftwerk con el tibio Kristallo 1973 tomado directamente de la electro concreta de los productores citados no era novedad.
El Krautrock y electro Dusseldorf característico de Kraftwerk y de aquella escena alemana se limita a ello, el mundo de la electrónica en esa fecha estaba más allá del Dusseldorf y desarrollándose de otra manera por verdaderos pioneros y genios.
Kraftwerk 1974 (Autobhan) empieza a desarraigar su electro Dusseldorf & Krautrock tomando la electro fluida que se desarrollaba en muchos países de Europa y EEUU, en especial (por aquellos años) la influencia Francesa paralelo a ello productores musicales y artistas dentro de la nueva escena electronica, en Alemania Tangerine Dreams, Schulze empezaban a experimentar sus respectivos estilos de electrónica (Berlin) influenciado también de la música electrónica concreta de aquella década, Dan Lasckman en Bélgica empezaba a experimentar con el Moog en varios de sus temas (Popcorn, Cides 72) y Moroder (Song of my Father) desde el 70 incorporaba componente electrónico en algunas de sus producciones tomando también el sonido concreto de la electrónica y no el desconocido Krautrock y la electro experimental de Kraftwerk, 1975 Einzelganger, meses antes que Radioactivity el cual toma clara influencia Moroder (Inicio de Kraftwerk post Moroder & Tangerine Dreams), Edgar Froese & Peter Bauman, Jarre, Schulze, T. Blake, Bernard F, Mort G. entre otros ya se adelantaban a una electrónica más rápida y cargada que los sólidos y limitados sonidos de Kraftwerk, TEE 1977 influenciado en trabajos de los artistas y productores citados añadiendo a Vangelis, Lacskman, Tonet, Klaus W, Dominique P. (por citar algunos) junto a la electro Munich (Studios) de Giorgio Moroder y su sonido NRG & Synthpop (I Feel Love, Working To The Midnight Shif, Queen For A Day, I Need You y el álbum From To The Eternity 1977) inician el modelo EDM que Kraftwerk a partir de 1978 TMM (Spacelab, Metropolis y varios de sus temas) toman como modelo electrónico la línea de todos los productores citados resaltando de entre ellos a Moroder, Peter Bauman (Leda), Edgar Froese, Jarre, Lasckman (Telex), Ryuichi Sakamoto & Ryou Kawakami (YMO), Martin W. & Ian C.M. (Human League), Claudio G. Romano M entre otros, alejándose Kraftwerk notablemente de su arraigado electro Dusseldorf & Krautrock, al igual que los Punk Convertidos de finales de los 70s, en su mayoría Ingleses (Ultravox, Numan, Visage, OMD, Depeche Mode, Spark etc) incluida también influencia en la llamada electro industrial o EBM dónde aplican en muchas producciones la fluidez y característica eléctrica del EDM y en poca medida la característica dureza lírica de Kraftwerk.
I dont want to take any credits away from Kraftwerk, but I think the "forefathers of electronic music" I read everywhere isnt true!
Actually, electronic music has a mother. Delia Derbyshire, who created the original "Doctor Who" Theme (1962/63) for BBC. You can find it on youtube, there also is a very short documentary about the creation process.
Sadly, she isnt mentioned in the history books of music because BBC kept the people responsible for the "BBC in house music" anonymous. Her name was revealed just a few years ago because of the show`s 50th anniversary, long after her death.
And dont forget Gershon Kingsley (actually Götz Gustav Ksinkski, a german guy too), who created the famous "Pop Corn" 1969!
One of the best synthesizer albums of all time.
I would love to see something like this for Computer World. Some of the sounds on that record blow my mind.

I’m a year younger that Claudio and I remember hearing this on German TV. I vividly remember that I was bathed wearing my green pyjama’s and then I was allowed 30 minutes to watch some TV. And I was clicking through the 5 channels, 2 Dutch and 3 German and I heard this. And I loved it! The next day I took tin foil and wrapped it a around me limbs 😂and sang robots robots! As a 5 year old. I recall but I could be wrong that they had drum sticks with wires and metal pads… I never really got into KraftWerk I was more into Giorgio and Jean Michel Jarre, Orchestral Maneuvers on the Dark. But KraftWerk undoubtedly engineered a lot of things for electronic music. And had I been 4 or 5 years older I’d probably really dug them too. 5 is just a little too young to appreciate music for most kids.

@@MrmelodyUs To be fair, it did make most music (especially within the pop genre), before & well after sound like the past but I take your point as Oscillators from 1968 is probably the standout track from Silver Apples of that era. Considering the time & technology available, it's a fantastic track supported by great lyrics & sounds for which they should be applauded & if I'm being honest, a recent find for me.
However, the origins of Kraftwerk date back to 1968 in Düsseldorf, Germany where founding members Ralf Hütter playing keyboards & Florian Schneider the flute, perform their first gig at the city's Cream Cheese Club. The band was called Organisation, a progressive free-form group who became obsessed with synthesizers.
Their 1973 track Kristallo is probably one of the first recorded tracks featuring an early sequencer modulating a rhythmic pulsating synthesizer, something which they became famous for:

Given the time that both bands were operating in the late 60s & how much slower & limited communications were, plus the fact that most releases were confined to records which were restricted to each global region, unless imported, it's unlikely that either band were aware of each other until some years later.

Yes, I'd agree that "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer/Moroder was a breakthrough track in 1977 but a lot of the sounds he used were similar to Kraftwerk's Autobahn from 1974 which was the point at which Kraftwerk wanted to break into the popular music market by introducing vocals & they did as Autobahn charted all over Europe as it was played on the radio!
I wouldn't really call Jarre, Tad Dream, Vangellis, etc at that time popular music in the context of being like a traditional pop song so the Kraftwerk stuff was breaking new ground in the 70's. In fact, when they toured the USA in 1981, hardly anyone had heard of them & their TEE, Man Machine & CW albums had such an impact on the American dance music scene, that techno was born as many of emerging artists were copying Kraftwerk's style, sound, melodies, etc & you only need to listen to "Planet Rock" by Afrika Bambaataa and the Soul Sonic Force plus the influence they had on people like Arthur Baker & Cybotron to hear that.

I was about 12 when my mates brother got him this album from Greece. It blew our minds. Got Grandads Accordion out to try and re-create the tunes as it was rarely played on radio and I didn't get a record player until I was 14.

Kraftwerk did in the 1970's and 80's what jazz bebop artists did during the 1940s and 50's, they changed music permanently. They were awesome and so is this video, thank you from America Claudio 🇺🇸😊.
‘Autobahn’ got far more attention in the UK but I always regarded ‘Man Machine’ as their finest moment. It took me to another level of electronic music appreciation in the late 70’s and early 80’s, along with Jean-Michel Jarre and Vangelis, and has enriched my life immeasurably ever since.

"The Man Machine" What a great album, I was only 6 years old, but Krafwerk and Jean Michel Jarre were my favorite music without a doubt at that time.

Yea me too I have lot jarre albums few krafwerk too.never new what type of music I would grow up to be into.am glad no one pushed there type on me like I see people doing still into the old electronic stuff.the best still think krafwerk where very advance even for the year it came out.
You can create the click from The Robots by using a very short decay filter env and a longer decay on the amp envelope. It's not a separate sound. The intro sweep for Neon Lights is an Arp Odyssey sync sound, but of course similar sounds can be done with the Minimoog resonant filter. They got a Polymoog for the production of Man Machine which was modified with an audio input. They also had an Arp Omni for string sounds like on Metropolis. There's also the Orchstron choir in the background for The Model. Drums are a bit of a mystery, but likely heavily modified and processed Farfisa Rhythm 10 and Vox Percussion King. They also used a Pollard Syndrum (bleeps on title track) and Synare 2. You should listen to the Techno Pop suite, it's probably the jazziest thing they have done past Autobahn.

I was a BIG Kraftwerk fan back in the 80's and I was in the Music business at the time. The thing that made Kraftwerk special to me and to the Hip Hop community (Africa Bambatta) was that their music had that funky "Swing" to it. It wasn't a sterile quantized straight on the beat sound , it laid off the beat a bit. Black clubs in L.A. and NYC played Kraftwerk cause it could mix into other dance music.

The first and probably only dance record that completely dispenses with hihats. By the way, the "closing of the Spacelab door" is actually the sound engineer turning on the plate reverb. Kraftwerk liked this unintentional sound effect so much that they simply kept it in the recording.

I have seen Kraftwerk in concert twice. I remember going to the first show with a classical music student in the 80s. He was appalled by the performance as "it didn't take any skills to turn on some computers." Your analysis clearly shows him wrong. The concert was one of the best performances I have ever seen. Every sound on this record is perfection. Every time I got new headphones or new speakers for 20 years I played this record and discovered new depth to the sounds.
I had not quite realized how jazzy the chord progressions are. I knew I liked them, but I didn't know how jazzy they could sound. That very much explains why Señor Coconut does so well with Kraftwerk.
Here in Texas and being a huge Depeche Mode fan, I never heard Kraftwerk’s music until 1991 when I bought Kraftwerk’s The Mix. I read articles about Kraftwerk in NME and other publications and realized after buying The Mix that I knew Trance Europe Express from Chicago house music samples. The Mix started a new love of collecting their entire back catalog….I was hooked.

Only a year separated Trans Europe Express and Man Machine (how incredible is that, already?!) and i bought the first of these two barely a few months before Man Machine was released. I was 15 at that time and i remember thinking, while listening to Man Machine for the first time : "This will always be the future!" Since then i've meticulously bought every single Kraftwerk LP, 7" or 12" in every different language they have released them (english, german, french, japanese and spanish) 😁😅🤖⚡
"This will always be the future!", is how I've felt about "Computer world" since first hearing it. Donna Summers' (Moroder's) "I Feel love" and Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Riot in Lagos" are 2 other records that still create that feeling.
"Musique non-stop" and "Boing Boom Tschak" are my absolute favorites by them... Loved them ever since I heard them the very first time, and I will love them forever.
They come the closest to what became minimal techno.

You should do also some analysis about Jean Michel Jarre (France) and Tomita (from Japan) also pioneers of electronic music in the 70ies.
Germany is a fabulous place. I went there twice in the 1990s to Reutlingen near stuttgart ans the people were amazing. And kraftwerk are something very very special.
My first encounter with Kraftwerk was in '74, when Autobahn was first played here in Austrian Radio. I was 12 and blown away, my parents hated it... From that moment I had to have all of their albums. Since that time I hear the influence of Kraftwerk in almost any modern music. The younger ones in my surrounding are sceptical whenever I say " I heard that back in the seventies", but get big eyes when I introduce them to the genius of '70s music. Mensch-Maschine is still my favourite electronic album. Needless to say that J.M. Jarre, Isao Tomita, Giorgio Moroder and the like are also and always on my playlist. Loved to see you dive in the first track having problems stopping whaffle 🙂

I'm not sure how correct that list is for this album. Much seem to have been done with the Odyssey, Minimoog and the Polymoog. Also, one of the vocoders used was the Sennheiser VSM-201.
The drums on the record are a mixture of Pollard Syndrum Quad, the Hohner Automatic Rhythm Player, Maestro Rhythm King (all manually triggered by the percussion pads) run through of course a lot of processing. I know that they also frequently used Ashly EQs on stage for the drums.
This is shocking how complex Kraftwerk is, and i think that their drum sounds, blips etc where made with just the Minimoog and that created their synth based style a lot, there was a huge lack for electronic drum sounds back then and now i can realize how this specific synth created the kraftwerk sound back along with other synths that came along. The best non kraftwerk video about kraftwerk.
I believe that some of the drum sounds were made on 'home-made' drum synths(maybe not on TMM album, though) Wolfgang Flur did a pretty amazing job with them, too

Kraftwerk's "The Model" was the first single I ever bought in 1981. Shaped my musical taste for many years to come and started my lifelong love of making music with synthesizers. Pride of place in my studio are my framed Kraftwerk 3D glasses which I got signed by Ralf Hutter after their gig in Liverpool.

You can imagine this "melody inside the melody thing" as the registers(drawbars) of an organ. They work as fixed filters for notes to emphasise certain harmonies of a tone. Means you can push down just one key and via pulling out different drawbars the harmony/overtones change, while the tone stays the same.

The accompaniment you added on The Robots with the Rhodes sounded sooooo nice. But it’s also such a mindfuck because the whole magic of Kraftwerk is that they were such strict minimalists and they thrived off the tension that was created by only giving you the bare essentials in the music. So it’s such a weird alternate reality to hear the extra harmony that was only subtly implied in the original recording and have it sound amazing in a totally different way
I am a big fan of Kraftwerk, they got me interested in Synths. This, and Tubular Bells inspired me the most in different ways.

I own this LP for about 43 years. And it is still not boring to hear. So many details. And this, Doctor Mix, is the very best musical talk about the little special details off it. While most talk is about their „style“, text or minimalism, you tell us about the real core of the music that transports their unique kraftwerkian aesthetics. Thank You! And I really did not mind the jazz playing to the Kraftwerk. It matched so good. And I liked it, although I am not into Jazz at all.
I’ve been listening to this LP on and off since I was 12, in 1980. You make me want to listen to it again. I’m no musician, but in a way I could always sense a lot of what you’re saying today: these guys were no newbies, they knew exactly what they were doing and it’s only warranted they inspired so many artists for the last decades. Thank you. I had a great time with you and kraftwerk.
My first Kraftwerk album I ran across during a deployment in Europe: Ralph and Florian. Fan ever since. Saw them in LA for Computer World (circa ~1980), their use of a screen and projections for uniforms and scenes was mind blowing. Saw them last year in Dallas, where they really maintained the retro style.
It's an unbelievably good video, very hard to find such diverse and detailed analysis of anything delivered with such passion. It would make Kraftwerk proud. Thanks for it Doctor Mix:) 🌟

As a child, friends of my parents played this for me and it just sounded so awesome, a few days later I bought the album then purchased everything they made ( on vinyl ). It still sounds so good, even more so today as they have updated all their catalogue. Wife hates it though. Thankyou for breaking this down, it was a pleasure to watch

Neon Lights is very romantic. It always takes me back to hearing Kraftwerk live in Helsinki. They were playing Neon Lights, I took my wife by the hand and we smiled at each other. Special moment.
"Neon Lights" was very influential for John Foxx (my musical superhero), which you can hear in his song "A Room As Big As A City".
If you hadn't heard about him before, be sure to check his album "Metamatic" (1980), where he dives into cold and raw waves with synths, vocals, a drum-machine (Roland CR-78 put through a flanger sounds like nothing else), a piano and a bass guitar or his newer stuff recorded with Benge (as John Foxx and The Maths), especially "Interplay".

The Metamatic album was one of the defining albums of my childhood. It was my older sisters and I remember asking her to put it on repeatedly and being mesmerised by eerie the sounds, almost unsettled at times even, but oh so amazing to listen to.
I love John Foxx. I have always been obsessed with him and Gary Numan!

I loved that album. I was a teenager at the time and I bought it just about the first day it was released here in the States. Like so many others, "The Model" was hands down, my favorite song. Thank you so much for that breakdown of the album. I learned quite a lot about it from a musician's POV.
I've been planning to do my own cover of "The Model" for a while now. I did it some years ago in Reason but now, I have a Hydra, a bunch of soft-synth plugins, (my favorite being the Arturia V collection), PreSonus Studio 1, and, after all these years, I still have Reason too. I had a career for a number of years in the 3D animation, motion graphics, and VFX fields and that pretty much took up all of my time and energy. But, now that I am getting to old-fartdom and am largely retired, it's time to get back to my other love which is electronic music.

I bought this album back in 1978 when I was 12 years old. I couldn't get enough looking at the cover while listening to the music. I absolutely loved it! And I still do, at the age of 56. Kraftwerk is in a league of their own. This album is a materpiece.

Claudio, thank you for this amazing journey. This album helped me to cope with a childhood that was pretty miserable and sparked my love of electronic music and synths to this day. I used to listen to it all the time and those wonderful tracks are firmly embedded within me. It was an escape and listening to it now triggers all kinds of emotions. This is my first time listening to Kraftwerk, I never gave them a chance in the past. Just listening to these few tracks, I now hear many of my favorite artists were inspired deeply by Kraftwerk, it's crazy !
the clicking phasing sound is due to the oscillators continuously running and the gate of the amplifier opens up and it is opening up at a different phase of the wave propagation due to the misalignment of the tempo with the frequency of the notes.
Thank you! My slightly older cousin gave me this album a year or two after it came out. I'd never heard of these guys, but I've loved it ever since. Now I have it on CD. In fact, I had ordered 2 CDs from a hole-in-the-wall record store. The other was Journey's Dream After Dream. Not surprisingly, one of them was an import. What surprised me was which one. Kraftwerk's CD came in less than a week. But Journey's took several. They had to order it from Japan! Anyway, this Kraftwerk album will definitely pump a good set of speakers! I've seen top quality 12" woofers move 1/2" on The Robots. My cousin had a Camaro, with a piece of plywood in the hatchback, leaning at maybe 20 degrees. In it, he had four Craig 50W 6x9s (2 per channel). He played his cassette rip for me. The bass would punch straight through you! More people should know about this awesome record. tavi.

I like those analysis! The deeper you listen, the more you find out, how genius these guys were. I currently make the same experience with the late albums of Talk Talk (e.g. "Spirit of Eden" or "The Colour of Spring"). Very interesting when it comes to sounds and harmonies! By the way, my vinyl of Man Machine crackles even more, I've played it countless times. Great video, Claudio!😘
If anything, I think the final Talk Talk album; "Laughing stock" might even better those two.
Reading Karl Bartos' autobiography, I think the resonance on the The Robots was controlled by the Synthanorma sequencer, one channel controlling the pitch of the notes, the other channel controlling the the frequency cutoff. Love the video!

That "typewriter" sound you are describing is something right from the song Dangerous by Depeche Mode. I love the sound - the "clicking" or percussive quality of it is satisfying.
Oh yes, I have this on vinyl album. Bought it as a second hand item in the 1990s and now I'm glad I haven't got rid of my vinyl LP collection (mostly Tangerine Dream - hey, wonder if you can do a full analysis of Phaedra!).
It was a trip for all of us! Thank you for sharing your perspective of this master record, it definitely opens new ways of listening. I would appreciate more videos of this kind.

Kraftwerk is genius! I remember as a kid listening to an old tape that my family had recorded various songs, some I knew, some I didn't. And the weirdest but most mind-blowing songs were this crazy, electronic music; I had no idea who this was back then. Then when I was older, I heard that same kind of music again and asked who it was. That was when I discovered it was Kraftwerk. I had never really heard of Kraftwerk but knew OF the music from before. Since I was really into Depeche Mode at the time (still a fan actually), it seemed like the perfect pairing. I had already fallen in love with electronic music long before my introduction to Depeche Mode. Kraftwerk is on a whole different level though; it's mind candy. It's otherworldly. I love Kraftwerk!

Kraftwek is important to me, but I'm more than happy for different versions. The original is always the original. However, a remade, re-arranged or mixed version always looks like its creator, and in my opinion these should never be compared to the original.
