    You have to hand it to him. After being such an awful husband, this is probably the best argument he could have made without completely lying. It’s such a desperate attempt but that somehow lends it a pathetic credibility: even the “bad personality vs bad person” bit is almost sold by how sincere he sounds. @glachil7166 Před 9 měsíci +109

    I still don’t know how I feel about him yet. I personally think that people missed the point of his character. The show isn’t trying to tell you “Hey look at the guy he’s the worst person ever” it’s trying to encourage Claire to find her own happiness despite how sad he is.
    The show has shown there are people who are bad people that you can keep in contact with despite their ugliness, Fleabag’s godmother, the businessman who sexually harassed a woman multiple times and even Fleabag herself but there are some people that despite the fact they’re just flawed people also actively make your life worse.
    You can justify it by saying “Everybody’s flawed” but when it actively hurts your own life you have to make the decision if it’s worth it for you. The same way Fleabag’s boyfriend Harry had to leave her and we still like Fleabag.
    Martin is a character you can feel sympathy for but Claire still has to learn to love Klare (Herself lol) rather than stay in a stagnant relationship out of pity, it is not good for the growth of herself or Martin who admits he fears that she didn’t like him for 11 years.
    The hardest part of life is not letting go of cartoonish villains, it’s easy to go, “he’s evil bye 👋”. The hardest part is letting go of human people who you feel bad for to live your own life. Some things just don’t work out and it’s hard to explain and even justify sometimes.

      @AlanaDelGrace Před rokem +111

      @@pepperpattynaise I think we’re reading this scene very differently. I take this to be Martin’s last ditch attempt at persuading Claire to stay with him. He details all of these things he does for her as if they are Herculean tasks and then blames the rest of the bad things he does on having a shitty personality. It reveals he is aware he is a horrible person and he doesn’t even want to put in work to be better. Essentially, he’s trying to guilt her into feeling sorry for him and tries to gaslight her into thinking that she is still in love with him. He then says the only way he would leave her is if she does something he believes she would NEVER do (grovel on her knees infront of him) since she is an extremely prideful person. This scene is so great because she doesn’t accept his speech and puts aside her pride to do what she knows is right but will be more difficult for her. Being happy without Martin is a more difficult choice than just staying with him and being unhappy.

    • @webkid4567
      @webkid4567 Před rokem +74

      Well it's a terrible example of gaslighting so you should look for a better example. Gaslighting is making you question objective facts.
      "That dress was green." - Fact
      "Don't be silly, you're misremembering, that dress was blue." - Lie
      That's gaslighting. That's it. Now someone who gaslights a partner is obviously gonna be very likely abusive in other ways, but that doesn't make all those other abusive behaviors gaslighting. And ironically, misattributing other abusive behaviors as this particular one based on an old film based on an old play just makes it easier for abusers to manipulate their partners.
      Not to mention all the things labeled as "abusive" now by internet psychologists that are actually just crappy behavior that everyone is guilty of at some point in their lives, especially in moments of inevitable conflict with a partner who is also imperfect and capable of crappy behavior, and are generally forgivable as long as you both take responsibility and make concrete efforts to improve.
      I know half of that was irrelevant and this character is an asshole, but words mean things and obscuring those meanings makes it more difficult for people being victimized by these behaviors to actually break through the cycle of abuse and seek help.

      I don't see it as gaslighting, or a desperate attempt to win back Claire. I think its quiet pent up rage that he kept in the course of their relationship as Claire's disgust towards him is palpable but he chose to quietly acknowledge it.

      @@RevolutionaryLoser well, and i don't mean for this to sound insulting, but how could you relate to them? the show at its core is about broken women and the men in it are only there to push the plot forward. it's about broken women and their relationships with men, father figures, trauma, their work, feminism & each other. you aren't really meant to relate to the men since they're just plot devices for the women at the end of the day. it's a show that is overwhelmingly about fractured womanhood, so not everyone is going to relate. but it can be good and still not be relatable. not everything that exists to be consumed exists just to be projected on by anyone who comes across it

      @@superwhizz114 If I could define what a woke show would be, it would be one where the main character is cool with being called a slut and the happy ending for one girl is a divorce. Also, conveniently, a dude with an anime girl as his profile is exactly who I think would calling things woke without knowing what it means.
