My Tractor Won't Start, Could it be the Seat Safety Switch?

- I asked a friend of mine, who used to be a service manager at a tractor dealership, what percentage of calls from customers who had a tractor that wouldn't start were related to safety devices. His reply..."98%".
If you own a fairly new tractor and it won't start, the first place to look for easy solutions is in the seat switch. Many tractors have a sensor that tells the tractor whether you're in the seat or not and many won't run if it thinks you're not there. That's the function of the seat safety switch and the subject of the video.
A seat can think you're not there because there's something that keeps it from coming all the way down. That's what happens when I'm carrying my chainsaw behind the seat and I hit a bump. The saw wedges in back of the seat and prevents it from going down and contacting the switch underneath, the tractor thinks I've fallen off, and it shuts itself off.
This is also a problem if you're really, really skinny. You can be bouncing across the field and the tractor dies, restarts, dies, restarts, etc. On some tractors you can adjust a crank right under the seat that loosens some springs that lets you push down more and the problem is solved. You can also try cinching down the safety belt and that can fix the problem. Sometimes the seat switches get old, get a little moisture in them, then they have to be replaced.
This video talks about what to look for, and the various designs of seat switches. It's best to find all of those switches on the tractor you own, so if it won't start on a 90 degree day in head-high weeds you can go right to the possible places and see what's going on. Occasionally, all you have to do is dig some brush out of the switch, or reconnect some wires, and you'll be back on your way.

I got fed up with Kubota's operator presence control system, I soldered a wire directly from the start terminal wire to the starter bypassing the module. I know its a no no, but I needed my machine working.
I had that issue on my Kioti...my dealer decided to just get rid of it. Now it will run no matter what, its great.
This is a common problem with riding lawn mowers, too. Another problem that is common with riding lawn mowers is the electrical switch for the PTO / mower deck. Most are actually a double throw switch and sometimes will work to turn the deck on but not make to tell the system that the mower is off. The result is that nothing happens when you turn the key! If that happens wiggle the PTO switch around while holding the key in the start position. If the mower starts you know what the problem is!
I have a 2020 Solis (Yanmar) 60 and you can't turn around to look backwards without the dang seat "safety" switch shutting down the engine. Also, like you said, if you are going at a good clip and bouncing around without the seatbelt on...the engine will die. I have the fancy adjustable seat. I'll have to check about the PTO shut0ff. Now I know why so many mechanics say to buy an older tractor! I guess this problem is a PITA, lol.
Hey thank U I just watched the video on starting your tractor with safety switches I think that is a problem with my b7510 Kubota thank you very much and I went and pulled them switches out today and switched it was sticking straight up I think someone that is bad but thank you I think you helped me out a lot 👍👍
I learned that about my John Deere tractor early on when the shear bolt would break on the brush hog. I had one instance recently where I had accidentally left the tractor PTO on and later the tractor would not start. After my neighbor came over and had me to get on it as he played with the switch and it started. I felt stupid after messing with it for so long and then it started after my neighbor figured out that the PTO was engaged by accident.
Sidney, don't feel stupid, that happens a lot to folks who are new to tractors. You'd be surprised at the number of calls a dealership gets from people who have just been delivered a new tractor and it won't start and they are pretty upset. That's one of the first thing the service manager will ask "is the PTO shut off?" Then they call back in ten minutes and say that fixed the problem. You're not alone.
First off, thanks for all the great tips in all your videos. I am a new tractor owner and a lot of your videos have come in real handy. My biggest problem with the seat switch on mine is that when I have the forks on, I can't see the end of them when picking something up unless I stand. That creates a big problem because when I stand and try to move forward the tractor stalls out. My switch is the lever type. I ended up using a zip strip to hold the lever down. I know that isn't the safest thing to do but what other option is there, I need to be able to see what I am going after. Thanks again and take care.
If you use those pallet forks enough you'll soon find that you instinctively know where they are without looking at the tips. The other thing, if your set of pallet forks has a frame with a flat place on top you can look at that and it will tell you whether they're level or not. It just takes a lot of practice to get really good with the forks, but when it all clicks and you get it figured out you'll be surprised at how easy it is to get them where you want them. I had same problem with my Boomer 35 and replaced the safety switch which was not the problem. One of the other safety devices was the problem and I didn't know where they were located and the dealer was absolutely no help. I just bypassed the safety start devices.
After your first video on safety switches I experimented with my Branson. The shuttle shift must be in neutral to start. I was able to get off the tractor with the PTO running (level ground with nothing attached) and it kept running. I'm thinking my Branson 4520R is a Republican.
My wife thought I should take that part out because of all the divisions right now but I thought most of my viewers would get that I was joking and take it the right way. Maybe your Branson will appreciate being in the power seat for the next four years :).

My JD 4105 will not start with the first turn of the key and may take 8-25 tries to start. When it starts, it runs fine. The battery is new. Is this a solenoid problem? Thanks.
PLEASE HELP I recently did this bypass for the seat switch and reverse switch. The bypass worked but the next time I went to mow my lawn the PTO switch would not work, the blades will not engage and I get a flashing icon on the screen regarding the PTO. Even though the bypasses work, now the blades won't engage...I checked the fuses and they are fine...do you have any ideas as to what I can do to get the PTO working? Thanks.

HELP!!Where is the safety switch on the kubota L3130?!! His tractor just died as we’re trying to get hay on the trailer... the alarm says hst safety switch.

I would like to know where you stand on ballast for the rear tires? Would you recommend fluid filled if so with what, wheel weights or weight on the 3 point.
Hey Steve, here's my video that goes over ballast: czcams.com/video/O-2-I68BGlI/video.html. Both tire fluid and wheel weights work well, three point weight works, but it limits maneuverability and ties up the three point. I personally have fluid in my rear tires and it's methyl alcohol which is non corrosive and won't freeze and that's what I'd recommend if you go that way.
Thank you for your reply Mike. Don't know how I missed this video because I thought I'd seen at least 90% of them and yes alcohol was going to be my choice as well but I heard about beet juice and was wondering if you have any knowledge on the product and what the upside or downsides might be.
Don't know about beet juice. I've heard of it, but have no first hand experience. I'm checking with my cohorts to see if any of them can chime in and I'll let you know if they've had personal experience with it. If it does the same thing I'm intrigued by the thought of it.
@@stevecrouch559 My tire guy refuses to use beet juice. He said it smells like 7 day old roadkill and turns into taffy in the nozzle. He said if that stuff gets on your cloths, it dries into rock candy . . .
That damn switch was the first thing I fixed when I got my tractor! Short piece of wire and a couple connectors and the problem was solved...permanently!

I am having trouble with my seat switch on an incline and I dont weigh enough to engage. Have a JD 3035 D. Any suggestions
You might try loosening the seat springs to adjust for your weight. That could be a crank in back, or under, the seat. Then, cinch the seat belt up and it should keep the seat switch engaged.

You can, but I sure don't recommend bypassing safety switches.

No comment :). Actually, and I didn't examine every tractor, my perception is there are certain models within brands that don't have many safety switches and others that do so its a little hard to generalize. I was sorta joking about the tractors and their parties, but it might be something to look for when shopping depending on what your preference is.

I told my wife just today that my tractor was a Democrat. How do I get a republican tractor? You should make a list so all those Democrats can by Democratic and just sit on there tractors. But I've got work to do.
