- In this video, I had the opportunity to chat with Nicole Hernandez, a 4th year OFMS resident about life as an An Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, typical day in the life, training required and tips for all!
Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons are unique among dental specialists in a number of ways. After completing four years of dental school, they go on to spend another four years in a hospital-based residency program for surgery. There, they are trained alongside other medical residents in the techniques of emergency medicine, general surgery and anesthesiology. In fact, they are the only health care specialists (aside from anesthesiologists) who can administer all levels of sedation, up to general anesthesia.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons focus on treating problems related to the hard and soft tissues of the face, mouth, and jaws (the upper jaw is referred to as the maxilla). While they sometimes work in a hospital, their practices are more often located in comfortable office settings. You may be referred to one of these specialists by your general dentist for a complex tooth extraction. Or, your orthodontist may send you for an examination if he or she suspects a problem with the alignment of your jaws.
They also may choose to undergo further training in a one or two year subspecialty Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Fellowship Training in the following areas:
1. Cosmetic facial surgery
2. Cranio-maxillofacial trauma
3. Craniofacial surgery/pediatric maxillofacial surgery/cleft surgery
4. Head and neck cancer - microvascular reconstruction
5. Maxillofacial regeneration (reformation of the facial region by advanced stem cell technique)

Can i apply for omfs residency in the us if i have completed both dental school and medical school in europe? Thank you, great video!
I would like to combine my passion for dermatology and orthodontics because it has a lot to do with life goals within theaesthetic medicine industry. What is a good way to obtain both certification
In terms of earning potential, is there a difference in professional fees a 4-year and 6-year OMFS can charge?
We don’t have the six year program in my country .
Vid on how to prepare for being doctor when young, since there is crap school in the way.
May I know whether this fellowship program is after undergrad ? Or is it after completing OMFS MD program
Dr. Webb, please feature careers in new dental specialists of oral maxillofacial radiology and dental anesthesia.
Sir please can you make a video on how to apply for MD, DDS as a foreign student
So if you acquire a dual degree can you become a specialist in ENT and OMFS
Hi, I hope you are doing well. I just had a few questions regarding fellowship opportunities after oral and maxi facial surgery residency. Am I eligible to do more than one fellowship after OMFS residency? If I hold a DDS and PhD, Can I still do fellowship after receiving my OMFS certificate of residency completion? Is a MD required to do fellowship?
Good looking Dr.Webb thank you wholeheartedly
No prob! Please let me know of any other videos you would like to see or any other suggestions to improve the channel!
Great video as always. Very informative. Would you mind interviewing an emergency room physician, please? I'm thinking about an EM residency with a fellowship in critical care. Thank you, Dr. Webb.

Sir please can you make a video on craniofacial surgeons and tell how to apply as a foreign student
cranio-facial surgery does not exists
Hi Dr. Webb. Thank you for the video. Very nice one. Do you have a link to Dr. NIcole Hernandez, does she have a youtube channel?
Hi, no she does not have a youtube unfortunately
Thank you Dr. Web. Please do link me to anything related to Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery, especially Residencies.
Hi,l am adental student (the first year)
If I want to speacilize in Maxillofacial surgery what should l do !!
I’m from Egypt and want to complete my studies in England or the USA
gimm gmail research
And question. She said residents make 250,000? Did she mean straight out of residency or like during residency? It seems like a lot.
starting salary out of residency
Once you are done with residency
Can you go to penn foster dental assistant then graduate and then apply for dental school
No.
Can u help me i need a advise
Thanks for the video!! did she say that 5 years out she can make over 500,000?? I want to be a oral surgeon and am looking for as many videos I can.
Good luck.
Trust me, doing it for the money will make you absolutely miserable.
Can someone explain to me whats the difference between an oral surgeon and oral maxillofacial surgeon?
I can't speak for the US, as the system there is a bit different. In most countries in EU, oral surgery is a specialization of dental medicine and involves pathology and it's treatment in the oral cavity. Maxillofacial is either a medical speciality or requires both degrees, again depending on country. Omfs treat pretty much everything in the face and neck- trauma, oncology, reconstruction, etc.
when's cardiac surgery vid
Can I do Residency in US/UK , after doing MDS in OMFS from India ?
Good video, but I was wondering if you could do a vid on getting over things that are repulsive to look at. I would love to become a dermatologist , but some of the things they do are pretty nasty. At least from my eyes it is.
Good suggestion! I will look into this! Make sure to subscribe to be on the look out for this and upcoming new videos posted every MWF at 5pm CST!

i have a question please? what is the difference between a oral and maxillofacial surgeon that just has dds and ms after his name , and a oral and maxillofacial surgeon that has dmd or md after his name or both dmd and md after his name? are they exactly the same and equally qualified in there profession of jaw and facial reconstruction? thanks!
India Smith well some people are so freaking smart to realize what it’s nasty for an average person it’s interesting and way to apply all their knowledge! Btw to be a dermatologist you must be so smart and have the very high nbme score !
Can a dentist (graduated in dental school) became a maxillofacial surgeon in USA? Not only an oral surgeon... in my country you need medial degree to became maxillofacial surgeon, dentists can only became oral surgeon...
Yes in fact only dentists become maxillofacial surgeons in the US. Complete the dental degree first, then apply and get into an OMFS residency. Like Dr. Hernandez mentioned, theres two pathways: a 4 year residency that does NOT include med school, and a 6 year residency that does.
What will be the salary for oral maxillofacial surgeon ?
ADA says around 500k
Hey whats up Nicole🥰🥰🥰
what is her instagram? or social media page?
Can you become Oral & maxillofacial surgeon if you finish medschool and you found that you like this field?
imar castro to ve an oral ald maxxillofacial surgeon you’ll have to study dentistry first
Is it possible tht you have two surgery specialty like omfs and orthopedic surgery? Is that legally or humanly possible?
Everything is possible if you don't care about time and money.
can you complete a DDS/MD in 5 years?
Nope. If you want MD, it's a 10-year program post-baccalaureate (a total of 14-year of higher education).
Hello, can I become an OMF surgeon with a BDS degree?
Omfs is a specialty of Dentistry!
@@samuelayomide8113 in some countries, you need mbbs as well...
10 years post grad. Ouch
So is an oral surgeon both a dentist and medical doctor?
Yes
I have been reading that OMFS working in private practices make much more than those who work in hospitals. Like 87k a year in a hospital compared to 200k in private practice, which sounds insane to me compared to the many years it takes. Does anybody know why is this? Is it because they are in low demand in hospitals?
Camil Alonso they make more to 250-500k
After going to dental school and all the extra learning i was wondering the amount of debt one could have.
It varies by the school that you went to and how much assistance you have to pay but good question!
i know the answer...tooooo much
Just trynna make bank😪👊
If anyone knows plzzzx reply me .....thanxxxxx for this
Can you do more study with me's?
Yes I will try and do more soon! Please let me know any suggestions to make the channel better. Thanks for watching!

Welcome Raul!
OMFS Residents make 250,000 a year?! Thats crazy!
P M after residency. They make about 50k in residency
Yes, starting off depending on where you live and work
Jed Obele oh see i thought he ment residents make that 250k which seemed like alot for a resident
Stetoscope for what?
Adrian Grigore F. She’s a surgeon and I think as she is doing MD she will be going rounds in medicine and another also to see tmj clicking breath sounds blood pressure for a lot of reasons but usually surgeons don’t use steth since others around them like nursing staff do most of the other medical issues also the patients initially get stabilised only then surgeons will be called for major surgeries
