I love this. My grandmother grew up in Kenya and later Tanzania as a British colonist. She wound up in Washington D.C. during WWII and then moved to California shortly after she married my grandfather. She loved the Nandi People, she grew up with them in the 1920s and always told me stories about them. It was a deeply ingrained memory from her childhood as she was sent to South America and the West Indies for school which is where she joined the British Army from. I never asked her about the Mau Mau Rebellion and what her thoughts were of it, I kind of regret getting her perspective on it. I do know though, that the older she got, the more she started to remember Swahili. It all came back to her, and her memories of the Nandi people. Despite her being a white colonist, they treated her well, as family really. She was 95 years old when she died, she loved her family, but she reverted back to her experiences with the Nandi in the end. I think there's something to say for that.

I beg to differ a little bit on the correct chronology and facts of the story:
1. Koitale was not the one who gave, the prophecy, it was Kimnyole who warned them and the Nandi killed him
2. The correct version of the prophecy was that the huge black snake will come spitting fire and would proceed to the large lake in the west in search for water
3. That the coming of the snake will usher in a new phase when the Nandi would be subdued by strange looking people.
(This prophecy is given in 1870s)
Then, koitalel's reign began. (I guess it's around 1880s, the Berlin Conference is busy taking place in Europe, Kenya gets partitioned and the reign of the British begins. The prophecy is thus fulfilled during the construction of the Uganda Railway as narrated) The white assassin was Col Richard Meinertzhagen
