Kelly Slater surfs and shares thoughts on the Helium Gamma and LFT Gamma by Slater Designs

- The Gamma is the mind of an 11 time World Champion distilled into one shape, built in two different ways, each one brand new.
Surfboard reviews are great for grasping how a surfboard might feel under your feet based on how it feels to someone else when under their feet, but for the Gamma review, any feet wouldn't do, so we decided to put it under the best feet we could find - Kelly's.
The Helium Gamma is so light it shocks you and so responsive it talks to you. Its bendy and springy but ridged - firm enough for Kelly to load up full force for maximum drive and light enough to whip around with complete quickness.
The LFT Gamma is different. It has more weight to it. Its more reassuring under foot and works best in long and lined up walls, or when sizable surf requires some extra confidence. It's firm and forceful. Just like Kelly on a long line at Jeffreys Bay or Rincon.
The LFT Gamma is best at controlling the speed a powerful wave gives you, and the Helium Gamma is best at creating speed when a weak wave isn't helping.
Kelly loves both. So do we. And so will you.

@@firewiresurfboards Wasnt expecting that kind of reply Lol. I think its pretty obvious your average surfer will not be as great as our 11-time world champ but dam. I have been torn between 2 boards one is your "SciFi" hoping it will improve my surfing but I'm not sure I want to hear your advice back and crush my motivation! Positive response please. I am debating between the your "SciFi" or a CI "Weirdo Ripper". I am surfing Cocoa Beach waves if that info helps.

Seeing this video pop up was the highlight of my day and it did not disappoint. Kelly is a rare athlete in that he could speak about almost any topic with a level of insight normally reserved for philosophers. Great video, love the content. Firewire keep them coming we love it. I rode a Gamma at a demo day in sub par conditions and it still went straight on my wishlist. Stoked.

I got mine this week, got the HE.... first session was a little bit trouble due to getting used to, but once you get your balance and grip and the sweet spot on it... maaaan, that's when you realise you've made the best disicion in your life buying this board

Its great to hear your perspective on fin and board design. There isn't enough discussion on the topic and with the industry charging >$75 for a set, making a sound purchase is hard. I travel with a bag full of fins and hearing Kelly talk about fin preference for a particular shape is informative and fun for us design and shape geeks.
i would say broadly fins are a scam. fins wont improve a crap board, and they will only make maybe 5% improvement to a good board. there is only so much you can do with templates and foils. stick to the core series fins and avoid the "signature tax" if you can just buy the neoglass fins. i think they are just fine.

I surfed Rangi last month and I took one Firewire Sci-Fi. Risky to take one board, it worked very well and later in Tahiti. Been thinking of getting a model like these (different tail). I don't make much money, but it turned out way worth it for me.

I would absolutely love to surf at the Surf Ranch, but at 10G's it's a bit out of a working surfers budget.

I surfed quads in eighties with no toe in with asymmetrical foils. Surf pipe and many more waves in Hawaii with... was very fast. Yea try it. fins were made out of foam.. Go commentary Kelly!!

I liked the Gamma, not sure why they stopped making it.
Make a fin box that can turn left and right so it’s adjustable and click into position. That way you could experiment without making a new board for angle. Should be relatively easy to make a fin box like that too.

What fins does Kelly use as trailers for his quad setup?
It's called the Numbster...Makes zero difference. Kelly just trying to flog his fins.
Five fins slow up the board, in my opinion. But Kelly is correct about a Thruster with a smaller back fin. Dane Reynolds also rides this config.
Was actually asking about back fins on the sides, but I see Kelly has an official quad set. I love the 3s and 2.1s as a thruster.
Ok Got you. Also respect to the GOAT, but the waves he surfs and the way he surfs is not really relevant to this old man paddling out in 1ft slop, day in day out. KS will make anything look good, I wouldn't even be able to catch a wave on any of his super thin boards.
Ye I am no Kelly Slater, but his fins go the best for me out of many options I have tried. Maybe I also come from a "twin fin era"

i saw two broken in a day in 8 foot waves in western Ireland. You need a pu board in serious waves. EPS is great when its head high and not windy

What kind of blank?

We build our own - LFT is an EPS blank with a high density foam center stringer. Helium is an EPS blank with a mix of paulownia and balsa wood wrapping the rails - a parabolic stringer, nothing down the center of the blank. The LFT and He boards in this video were pulled straight from our San DIego HQ the night before this video. They're the same thing you'll find in the lineup or on a surf shop rack.

No. He left to start Slater Designs a few years ago. He wanted the freedom to work with any shaper or board designer he wanted. Same goes for materials, board builds and all else. It's fun to run your own show. :)

The K2.1 set is now called the Reactor in FCSII. Best of all you can get them in Small Medium and Large not just the Medium size Kelly rides.

pretty sure he is telling porkie pies about that back fin. its a reactor template? firewire can you confirm? i agree the reactor is more like kellys 2.1 fins with a more upright rake that i love. but that aint kellys fin. its a reactor.
It is a Reactor, you're right. FCS based that template on Kelly's template, so it really is Kelly's template.

Bit of topic but I wonder how these professional surfers eyes are. My eyes give me grief these days if i surf more than 2-3 hours. I wear sunnies in the water but they aren't always user friendly. Would be good if a few more companies developed them.
Cool video Kelly but take time to make a short video to save some kids life's Were loosing a lot of young lives due to the opioid epidemic. Thank you. They will listen to you before they obey the parents or law enforcement. Believe me,drinking alone can lead you to other substances over time. I can tell you're one of the good guys Kelly. You might be surprised at how many life you save.
