English Medium Blessing or Curse? Sonam Wangchuk on New Education Policy

  • One of the biggest transformational features of the recently announced New Education Policy of India is the use of mother tongue as a Medium of Instruction at the Primary level. Unfortunately not many seem to understand the significance of this step as we are still reeling under the influence of our colonial past. In this video Sonam Wangchuk shows that the top 20 countries in the world (in GDP terms) all use their mother tongue as the medium of education and the bottom 20 countries in the world, most of them in Africa, use English or a European colonial language as the medium of instruction.
For those who still have doubts about the performance of children who study in non-English languages as the medium, he presents two examples that will change their perceptions forever.

Sonam Wangchuk ji, this eye-opener is so beautifully and tactfully presented by you. Hope the 'still-I-am-an-Angrezi-slave' Indians see the light of truth, and, as you say, without losing this golden opportunity - of PRESERVING ourselves!
You yourself stand as an example of what you speak - such knowledge, such diction and clarity of thought, as well as command over multiple languages - as you are established well in your mother tongue.
Studying his basic Mathematics, and general science in his mother tongue Tamil, at the Rameshwaram Elementary School, a little boy rose to be an ace Space Scientist (with exclusively Indian Degrees!), and the most beloved President of India - Abdul Kalam ji's life and achievements speak more eloquently than 'slavery-ridden' counter-arguments!
May you continue to inspire Indian minds to glory!

You are a mental Slave of English !! It is scientific fact (unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000146632
) that children learn in a better way/good comprehension skills, when they are taught in their Mother Language. Take example of France,Germany,Japan,China etc all these countries are developed nations and their education is in mother language. English should be taught only as "language" not as a medium of education.
"ENGLISH DOES"NT DEFINE YOUR INTELLIGENCE, IT IS JUST A LANGUAGE" For Eg- In japan if u want to do Job, then it is compulsary for you to learn Japanese, otherwise u wont get a single Job, not even in a Petrol Station. Japan has'nt taught english , is it not a advanced nation?

Sir, you are right. I am Sandeep Singh from Gurgaon Haryana. My medium of primary education was Hindi. Which is my mother tongue. I was very interested in science. Being a Hindi medium, I could easily understand the thoughts of others and convey my ideas easily to others. But when I went to class 11, I took up non-medical because I was interested in science from the beginning. From 11th grade, my medium of instruction changed from Hindi to English. The English language impeded my thinking, understanding and expression. I was hesitant to ask questions because I could not speak English. Due to a lack of knowledge of the English language, I could not write my thoughts properly in the exam. As a result, I failed twice in 12th grade. If this kind of education policy comes in which the medium of instruction is your mother tongue, many children will be able to get themselves out of the cycle of language and learn the importance of education more than learning rote.

@MH 12 Proud Punekar true. but that can be gained in a diploma or even a degree later on.
imagine if the curiosity was allowed to expand at the age 5-8yrs, if children were allowed to grasp simple concepts simply instead of making it more complex by putting it in a different language.
would you have Tagore write Gitanjali in english? or even Harivanshrai Bachchan write Madhushala in english?

    • @ranirathi3379
      @ranirathi3379 Před 4 lety +2

@MH 12 Proud Punekar well i really don't have any problems with giving English language the importance it deserves. however I think there's something more important, that is taking pride in who we are and what we do and doing it to the best of our ability.
these days when google can translate languages, the gap of not understanding has been bridged so much.
with the same example as above - Tagore got the Nobel for literature which he wrote in his own mother tongue. meaning, if it is impactful enough, original enough, if it makes us proud of having created something, it doesn't really matter.

People who say that starting with mother tongue makes your English weak... I studied in Bengali (my mother tongue) from class 1-12... Then when I went to college, I had no problem with English. It's just an another language. It's not a subject. Learn to see a language as a language. Then everything becomes easy.
I am a successful researcher now with 20+ publications.. my mother tongue never stopped me from achieving my goal. Rather I was able to learn smoothly.

      Regional languages
In my opinion, a problem can come by teaching in regional languages that if a student is belongs to state like Tamilnadu, Kerala and Gujarat and his father is doing a job in Delhi and he also started living with his father so when Delhi schools will teach him in regional language which is Hindi. the student will definitely face the problem in learning or understanding because his regional is Tamil, Malayalam and Gujarati not Hindi.

Those who are advocating regional languages over English medium , I have a few questions for them.
    1. Has proper Science textbooks been written upto even 10+2, let even undergraduate level in any regional language? Until we do that , how can we even think of junking English ?
    2. JEE Mains is conducted in English , Hindi and Gujarati and JEE Advanced in English and Hindi. India has 22 scheduled languages and no national language and as per census 2011 data India has 53 crore Hindi speakers. What about the rest of the 57 crore people? In an apparent effort to ' Indianise' the exams , are you not doing injustice to the majority and biasing it towards Hindi speakers? This is one of the possible reasons that some science students (especially , state boards) are not getting their due.Same thing is true for the CSIR UGC NET exams( for Phd entrance).
3.The great edge that we have in the IT industries is because of our English language educated workforce and possibly this is one area where we are truly global leaders. The coming era is going to be of AI, ML and Big Data. Other than scientific innovation and technological prowess , English will help us to be a true leader in this upcoming age.
    4. When you produce world -class research ,you have to place it before the world in English. All papers in science and technology are written in English. All your research, presentations before the global experts of the field are in English. Like it or not, this is the way things are and things are likely to remain. Even German ,Russian and Japanese researchers ,who otherwise have their entire education in mother tongue have to do it and for that purpose English is emphasized in their universities.
The real solution is not attacking English for some narrow jingoisitic nationalism or trying to circumvent it , but to develop ,polish and fortify the English language skills of our working age-group as well as children from the youngest possible age. At the same time, giving due importance to the mother tongue and exposure to literature in it is essential for the child to know about his country, past and surroundings.
The best solution is to give an English language education right from 6 years of age for all Science and humanities subjects while incorporating a strong component in mother tongue and its literature at least till class 10th and preferably till class 12th.
