I find the same to be true with the recent CG Peanuts movie. It felt very underrated even though it not only looked fantastic, but was very innocent and true to its source material. These movies have a lot of heart, and apparently the majority of consumers don't find that worthwhile.
@@games_on_phone89 Spiderverse is fantastic too, but not anywhere near as underrated as either of the movies mentioned here. Both this and Peanuts will likely be tossed aside and forgotten in the years to come, whereas Spiderverse is not only practically confirmed to have a sequel on the way, but it's extremely well known and appreciated by audiences, even this long after its release. It is a beautiful movie, but not quite the same.

It is a crime that the Boss Baby made more money than this. Dreamworks just released this movie too close to the Boss Baby with not nearly as much advertising.
You bet it is a crime! It’s absolutely wrong that people wanna bash Captain Underpants for having bathroom humour yet they defend The Boss Baby for the same reasons even though the latter had nowhere near as much of a meaning in having it!
Can I also add that Boss Baby actually got nominated for an Oscar for best animated movie of the year while Captain Underpants didn’t? Even the director was upset about it, he made a tweet about it and everything. Shame!
Being in my early twenties, these movie and Mr. Pilkey’s masterpiece books saved my life, As I grew older and started to get into the horrors of adulthood, his creations reminded me one valuable lesson , never let your inner child or creativity die within inside, it is always ok to express it.
I sat through this whole video, strolling down memory lane and thinking of all those wonderful stories. And when the video was over, I realized that my face was sore because I’d been holding a giant smile for 16 minutes straight. I never really thought about how iconic and special those books were for me until now. But to this day just seeing Dav’s artstyle is giving me pure, unbridled, childlike joy. I can’t wait to show my kids that same joy I had
I remember one of the books had a sign that said “free brake inspection” and they rearranged it to “free bra inspection” and I laughed too hard at that as a kid

Just things to PRAISE. - The celebrity voice cast isn't annoying, SOMEHOW. - The voices sound fitting to the characters. - The animation is GREAT. Going into three animation styles throughout the movie. - And it somenow has has ... less fart jokes than most other kid movies?
You know... It was so very well made, they do not forgot that some of the kids that read the book are now grown up... I thought it would be boring but, I actually laughted... A lot...
I almost found myself crying by the end of this video. I am no longer a child and yet everything you said makes me of think of when I was, and it spoke to me in a way few things have recently. It is truly remarkable how personal this video was for you, but also how personal you made it for the viewer, and for that I commend you.
God that last bit really nit home for me because as someone who loves making cartoons and comics and told over and over not to get distracted by childish cartoons it made me really sad. Especially since I didn't do the best at concentrating on my work as much as I wanted to get the grades it always felt like I was lagging behind.
A small thing I will always love from both the books and the movie is that Krupp would have had to read Captain Underpants to become Captain Underpants and part of me likes to think that in his cold heart he did find some enjoyment with a character that was kinda based on him being a hero to kids. Also being a kid who read all the books, you'd think it'd be weird to have Krupp fall in love and what not and give him the lunch lady. But it was very nice especially as an adult now. As a kid you never think about what the adults around you are going through until you start to actually understand their frustrations and you just want what's best for them. So I'm glad Krupp got some kind of a happy ending too.

But here’s my take. Please go see Cartoon Palooza’s review of Shrek 2 to see that not only do people treat it like Schaffrillas Productions and the majority of people gave it *way* more praise than deserved, then you’ll get that unfortunately, not everyone wants to get why people like Shrek 2) Kung Fu Panda trilogy (the second to the most extent) Puss in Boots The Aardman movies The Madagascar franchise Megamind How to Train Your Dragon (let alone its sequels) Rise of the Guardians Captain Underpants: The First (, Second and Third if it were a film series and one of DreamWorks Animation’s great trilogies besides Madagascar, KFP and HTTYD) Epic Movie Shrek 1 (surely, a lot of people like it, but at the same time, there are people like Nostalgia Critic and PhantomStrider that compare it to its oldest sequel) Over the Hedge Shrek Forever After (Schaff wasn’t joking when he made “Why Shrek Forever After is an Underrated Gem”. It has the problems people complain about for themselves to consider it if mixed quality at best, but I can also remember why I used to like it as a kid watching Schaff’s video) Puss in Boots
Remember when ElectricDragon505 put the 2D DreamWorks Animation quadrilogy (I mean, pentalogy, I’d regarding Joseph: King of Dreams) in #6 on his list of “Top 10 Underrated Animated Films”?? Welp, one thing to question: Didn’t AniMat day it was closer to good-to-great (when he reviewed it) than on par with the rest of the hand-drawn DreamWorks Animation films about a year before he made “Top 10 Underrated Animated Films”??????? And why would Joseph: King of Dreams not share the same spot??????? Can’t wait for AniMat to review Joseph: King of Dreams on AniMat’s Classic Reviews, sometime this decade!
Alfred Medina Personally, I do find Over the Hedge flawed but overall likeable, but the reason why i put it in the category of the several DreamWorks Animation films hat don’t always get the credit they deserve is because some people just look for things to complain about in an above-average movie in favour of ones that get more praise than deserved like the live-action Disney remakes (excluding The Jungle Book).

As a kid, I read a LOT of Captain Underpants comics. I was 9-years-old when the movie came out, and I was excited to watch it. One of my favorite comic book series on the big screens! I knew I had to watch it. After I watched the movie, I absolutely LOVED it. I adored the "Uranus" joke (that you covered), the scene where they discover Professor Poopypants's last name, (I was laughing so hard at that part) and when they found out his name was "Dr. PP Diareastein Poopy-Pants Esquire" (absolutely DIED from laughter at that part as well). This film _captured_ the humor that made me laugh out loud as a kid while reading the comics, and it was nice, seeing a film that encouraged such adolescent humor. That's why I was so confused when nobody was talking about this movie. It was just *gold* to me. (I forgot to include this, but I also liked that one scene where they are singing about when they found out Poopypants' last name) And don't even get me STARTED on how much of a *BANGER* the "Captain Underpants Theme" by Weird Al Yankovic was. When I heard that, I was just bopping my head up and down and just vibing to the song. It was so catchy and excellent, and fit the movie so well. I still occasionally listen to that today. This movie was a masterpiece. You're absolutely right.
Cindy Steffens I agree and once I heard they aren’t in schools anymore it was worst than hearing that the Jurassic world show was on august and I was litterally dead inside
The Netflix show is great as well. I especially love the third season. But yeah I related to the worry of separation in the film. I have a group of four friends that I’ve had since middle school. But every year there were two classes for the grades. So we would sometimes get split. But I remember one year I got placed in the other class than the other three. That was a really boring year. Luckily for the last two years of middle school we miraculously got placed in the same class. And our names all kinda line up alphabetically so we got sat next to each other. It was awesome.
Something you skipped over was Krupps face when he finally came back to his senses, you could see the concern in Krupps eyes when he saw the other kids in pain, I liked this because it showed a little more depth into a character that was meant only to be a grouchy old man. I know it's subtle and I 'm a little late on this but I really like that image of Krupp, completely silent in the rain, no constant yelling, just pure anger.
Mosey Onover Teachers letting you do what u want on the last day?? That exists?! 😮 In my case, the last day of school is just a normal day of school. Nothing special. I can really tell that you put your heart and soul into these videos and it just makes me happy to hear somebody talk so passionately about something that they love. Thank you for your Contant.
This video is a masterpiece. You explained this so well. These books are so innocent and filled with such creativity. As a kid, we've had some creative imaginations, and we would also find comedy in the simplest of things. This series is a treasure. ❤
These books were a godsend to me in my lonely homeschooled, bullied at martial arts life as a 9 year old kid. I enjoyed going to the library because of this, and I actually got into manga because of it. Now I'm a huge fan of the arts, I've gotten really good at writing stories, and I've somehow remembered how to become a kid again. Thank you Dav Pilkey. Without your books that I read as a kid, I would never have been a kid. Thank you.
I loved reading these but my school library wouldn't let me check them out after I got to a certain grade because "My reading level was too high." God I hate that logic.. I was in like 4th grade let me read Captain Underpants!
These books were a big part of my childhood as well, so when I heard this movie was coming out, I made certain to watch it in theaters, and, yeah, as you said, it was everything I wanted. Which surprised me, I didn't expect it to hold up for me as well as it did; I was ready for a bit of nostalgia and a mediocre movie, but it really was so much more.
It’s because doesn’t take itself seriously (I mean it in a good way) it knows it’s silly and it embraces that. To quote Krupp in the movie; “Even though it includes the lowest form of wit and potty humor there actually pretty funny”
I strongly wonder why it wasn’t until dreamWorks borrowed Captain Underpants when the Captain Underpants franchise tried out various animation styles besides hand-drawn and CGI. Just curious.
1:08 You clearly forgot about Captain Underpants and the Invasion of the Incredibly Naughty Cafeteria Ladies from Outer Space (and the Subsequent Assault of the Equally Evil Lunchroom Zombie Nerds)
Might as well share this life-changing story about how my family stopped going to church because of me reading Captain Underpants here. So I was but a fourth grader, and every Sunday my family would go to a family-style church. It was styled like a Christian YMCA, if that makes sense. My parents would go to an adult seminar, and me and my little sister would go to a children’s seminar, and that was that. There was a ‘band’ that would play for the kids, Christian songs and stuff, before actually praying. I never really was into church, so I started bringing captain underpants books in to read during the seminar. I got away with just reading during the seminars a couple of times, but I would constantly talk to the kids next to me about how funny these books were. They overheard me and the books were taken a few times. So my little brain formulated a plan. “How do I keep reading captain underpants?” “Idk, Bring another one” So that I did. I would hide 2 captain underpants books in my shirt, at church, and read them during the seminar. When they got taken away? Fuck you. I flip open my shirt and bada bing bada boom, another one for my pleasure. This *actually fucking worked* for about 3-4 WEEKS before the administration straight up told my parents that I couldn’t keep going to their thing. Probably because they were terrified of how many books I had. Where will he hide the next one? Up His ass? Who knows? And yeah. That’s the story of how my captain underpants antics landed me in some hot water with the church. I wonder if god looks down on me now... *“You did good, son. You tried, and you tried damn well”* When I go to heaven, you bet your ass I’m bringing Captain Underpants: The Revenge of the Spectacular Lunch Ladies
The animated series is comedy GOLD, my parents little brother, hell, my 93 year old grandad have laughed themselves into a coma at at least 2 episodes.
This movie gets everything right. the right amount of potty humor, how the characters would act, the art style, the story, even the heart and charm of the books. the only 2 problems i have with the movie is that the beginning is somewhat slow and George and Harold voice actors seem somewhat old, but the slow pacing in a way makes the viewing better as you get to take in everything that the movie has and the voices are done in a way that you forget a 42 year old Kevin hart is voicing George
IKR! At first, you'd think Kevin Hart as George and Thomas Middleditch as Harold is miscast because it’s putting an adult voice on a child. But when you see the movie itself, you realize it fits the immaturely funny character of the pain characters’
THIS movie and book series is what entertainment for kids should be, no stupid deep life lesson, no depressing character backstory, just a good Ol' creative story with the funnies. Seriously, think about Pixar, they should take a lesson from this, no boring tear-inducing story just for money, instead just a cool, funny movie for people to enjoy, something that never gets old. I've loved Captain Underpants since I was 6, THAT is proof of how much of a legend this series is, the humor never gets old, the art style is amazing, the stories are childish, but are still classic masterpieces. Thank you for your time.
Y’know, looking at the later books in the Captain Underpants series, they do kind of explore something akin to a “complex theme” a bit more directly. But, it doesn’t depart from the humor that was the foundation from the very start; it is the basis for the theme itself. I forget if it was book 8 or 9, but there’s an entire tangent where Dav basically goes off explaining the difference between “adults” and “grown ups”. “Grown ups” are, well, people that have grown up physically. “Adults” meanwhile, are people like Krupp, people like Mr Meaner or Ms Ribble pre book 5, all those Jerome Horowitz Elementary staff. People that have “given up” on childlike wonder and become miserable. The tangent ends with the statement towards the kids reading, played off as something offhand before going back to the action, that if an adult is giving you a hard time, you can always count on seeking help from grown ups that you can trust. And I just… love that. It weirdly takes a turn for encouraging kids to look at the aged people in their lives, and might even have helped encourage some kid with an abusive parent or something confess to a teacher about it, or a friend’s parent, or something else like that. Truly, if there is anything “deep” to be gleaned from both this film and the original book series itself, it’s a message of not letting go of your childlike wonder to the world, not letting go of your humor, not letting go of your simple hopes. Dav as an author of such a silly series hasn’t let go, and neither should any of us grown ups. But the other thing that makes it great is that besides that one aside, the series never dwells on themes like this. It doesn’t dwell on its own message. It’s pretty darn implicit in its simplicity.

I find the same to be true with the recent CG Peanuts movie. It felt very underrated even though it not only looked fantastic, but was very innocent and true to its source material. These movies have a lot of heart, and apparently the majority of consumers don't find that worthwhile.
@@ThisCatIsBored and spiderverse
@@games_on_phone89 Spiderverse is fantastic too, but not anywhere near as underrated as either of the movies mentioned here. Both this and Peanuts will likely be tossed aside and forgotten in the years to come, whereas Spiderverse is not only practically confirmed to have a sequel on the way, but it's extremely well known and appreciated by audiences, even this long after its release.
Shame!

(I forgot to include this, but I also liked that one scene where they are singing about when they found out Poopypants' last name)
And don't even get me STARTED on how much of a *BANGER* the "Captain Underpants Theme" by Weird Al Yankovic was. When I heard that, I was just bopping my head up and down and just vibing to the song.
If this movie came out any other time, it would be a pretty good success.

“How do I keep reading captain underpants?”
“Idk, Bring another one”
So that I did.
