  • On this episode of Ben's Worx i find a piece of scrap firewood and turn it into a family heirloom, The curly grain on this redgum wood is beautiful and using my electric planer to plane down the surfaces ready for milling worked out great. I finished the fingerjoint box using scandinavian danish oil by feast watson.

    I've watched many woodworking videos today and not one got a subscribe out of me. You didn't do anything impossible, You didn't dazzle us with motivating music, You didn't use lingo to prove your wood prowess. You made an amazing video that will inspire normal wood workers - like me. Thanks. I really enjoyed your format.

    Tools are important but knowing how to use them is just as important. You word smoothly and quietly. I learn as I watch different ones.
    Some use a lot of colored resin and others none at all. Mr Eman is looking for perfection where none was offered. Personally I thought it was a masterpiece. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It is well because There is only one of each of us. I love miniatures and the box was close enough. Many blessings

    Now I have a good excuse to buy the hand held power planer.
    up to this point I just couldn't justify buying it. That's what I've been missing in the process. I was given some already split "fire wood" in which i found a few pieces of dark walnut that I've been trying to salvage. The hand held power planer will get me a 90 degree angle much quicker than the process that I've been using. Cool Idea.

    Very nice work. The timber looks quite similar to the Salmon Gum locally sourced around here (WA Goldfields). I went out and cut about half a tonne for wood working last week (the stuff in the firewood pile has too many splits & cracks in it). Very hard and dense wood, but turns up well on the lathe.
    I might try making a box like that. Don't have a bench saw, so I'll have to use the band saw and have a think about what type of corner joints - but I do like the style of that box very much.

    You sure that was "fire wood" or a curly red wood lol!!! I'd be going back to the wood pile and getting all of that same wood!!! That's some pretty good quality curling, and you definitely have the skills and the tools to process that wood! If you go out to get more fire wood and cut a tree down, make sure to claim the crotch lol! Best chance for the nice figured grain pattern and possibly some spalting!

    That Scandanavian oil really brought out the texture of the wood. Honestly, a fabulous choice. I had wondered why you hadn't faced it off with a different saw instead of the planer in the beginning. But that would of taken more of the meat of the wood you wanted for the finish I'm guessing?

    • @he-mansuncle7661
      @he-mansuncle7661 Před 6 lety +1

      Ben's Worx haha, next time you need to ask for just that wood! Tell them you enjoy the smell of it burning 😂... It'd be awesome if you could get some logs of it, maybe for a cheaper price? Or if you go and get it, ask if you can search the firewood... it's a shame that they are just cutting it up, maybe they would give you some bigger pieces if you tell them what they can look for and make more money keeping them whole than making firewood out of it.
      Off to eBay I go, gonna see if I can find some! Would go great with some of my other curls and fiddlebacks
