DILLON: "With less than a week to go and aiming to weigh in at 220 pounds for his championship fight with Ken Norton, Muhammad Ali has stepped up the pace of his final training preparations. The champion is a constant source of amazement to the fight mob, with his occasional and unorthodox approach to training and conditioning. Ali varies his daily routine as the mood strikes him -- shadow boxing today and not tomorrow. And at times completely skipping contact work with his sparring partner. A superb boxer, but seven months past his 34th birthday, Ali no longer has the stamina nor the legs to dance and box for 15 rounds. Instead the champion has concentrated on developing extra punching power by working on the heavy bag.
Ali's bag is filled with rags and assorted material, instead of the usual sand, which can be hard on the hands. Ali has 37 knockouts in 52 fights and has announced he will stand and fight the challenger and will, in fact, knock Norton out."
ALI: "I always like pressure, like Frazier, like Foreman, Liston, I like pressure. Gerry (indistinct) the first come-back after three years, came back pretty......anything.....I like pressure."
ALI: "My position is this. I will knock Norton out. My power is back now, my hands used to be hurt, I couldn't hit him hard the first two times. I was hitting heavy bags too hard I found out, I got it headed back to a (indistinct). I got my punching power back. I destroyed George Foreman with my new style. (indistinct) and tagging him. I destroyed Joe Frazier and I will destroy Ken Norton."
The first time Ali and Norton fought Norton won, breaking Ali's jaw in the process. The second fight ended with Ali winning on points.

Aha that’s why Cossell keeps asking Ali if something’s wrong with his hands in early 70s interviews.. I notice something’s unusual with Frazier 1 and Norton 1; Ali’s hands weren’t operating normally and he wasn’t feeling relaxed sending them off and his punches were lighter.. did he actually have hands injury during Frazier and Norton fights?

This was right after Ali had operations on both legs from Inoki kicking them for 15 rounds .He can barely move in this clip ,the err, "dancing he was doing did not resemble what he did even a few months prior to this ,his legs looked atrified here .He could move across the ring like he was floating at amazing speed here he looks like a big ofe .He should have never fought Inoki ,after that debacle he never moved or stoped another fighter because his legs got f-ed up by Inoki. He then fought and took shots from Norton and Shavers that he never would have taken .The tail end of Ali's carear is a nightmare his own people used him ,after this he fights Shavers and took shots that I have NEVER seen any fighter take ,Ali managed a win there to ,and he did win the boxing match but definatly lost the fight .I t got so bad that Dr.Percheco quit .watching the Shavers fight is actually painfull.

yup, not the first time I've heard that Inoki permanently damaged my man. Just dumb. And it's amazing Ali was able to win when when he did in the late 70's.

I really thought Norton was just extremely difficult style wise for Ali. I think Norton would’ve figured a way to put the pressure on Ali even if the inoki fight didn’t happen. Fighters do adapt in the ring

@@hhjhfgujbf6837 Norton was a nightmare for Ali in all their fights. But it didn't help abusing his best asset, his legs, for some silly adventure with a wrestler. It was dumb and it damaged him. Most people think Ali lost the third and some people think Ali lost each Norton fight, they were that close.
