      Pura Villanueva Kalaw was not the first beauty queen she was just the replacement of Leonarda Limjap who was the original that year because the winner declined the title because she was scheduled to go to Japan for a holiday with her family

      The 1908 manila carnival was marred with controversies because of the method that the organizer used in determining the winner was by balloting thats why the
      Philippine Assembly ( House of Representative today) intervened out of the 69 votes Leonarda Limjap got 39 and the second highest votes went to Pura Villanueva in fact Pura Villanueva was very reluctant to accept the offer to replace Leonarda limjap because she is contented to just rule the Iloilo Carnival. The competition for the very first manila carnival was very stiffed because all of the candidates came from wealthy families and they are all well educated as well thats why the organizers were very concious in choosing the winner . The candidates this year are Leonarda Limjap, Pura Villanueva, Carmen Francia, Dolores De Morio, Paz Yangko and Inocencia Reyes

    • @kennethyosores7249
      @kennethyosores7249 Před 5 lety +16

      Pen maker Ang ibig sabihin dahil declined si Leonarda Limjap pa rin ang nanalo dahil hindi sya nag resigned as winner or disqualified because she has done something immoral. May naka schedule sya na byahe patungong japan thats why hindi sya pwede pero hindi nangangahulugan na hindi na sya ang winner. Kailangan ng Organizer ang maghanap ng proxy winnner dahil ang carnival queen ang highlight ng Expostion na ito wala silang choice kong hindi tinaggap ni pura villanueva ang offer the organizer can offer it to the other candidates masta lang may maipakita silang winner sa gabi ng coronation para masiyahan ang manonood

I was desperately trying to inquire about the photo from relatives to no avail. I am so sure that she was the one on the picture because of the prominent mole on the tip of her nose. I wish I could just dream about those times to experience it. It must be very enchanting.

The Philippines was already ahead of its time in that regard. The backstory coupled with interesting facts of that era would make this a brilliant and engaging autobiographical full length feature film. Hope someone takes the initiative.

Shows the diversity of the Filipino people, the beauty and innate nobility in manner and refinement of the Filipina, and that the first queen of the Philippines was not a meek woman, but truly a woman of substance: fiercely intelligent, knew herself, and was ready to fight for the rights of other women; her physical beauty was something to be admired, of course, but it is in being herself that this woman truly deserves to be called a queen. Ronaldo Adoptante, nice to know. Very grateful for you to point it out. Wow! But, unfortunately, Leonarda Limjap missed the boat when she relinquished the crown. " To the winner, the glory!", as the saying goes. And, maybe, the crown was really intended for Pura, the Queen of the Orient. She has a very good advocacy that represented the true sentiment of the Filipino people during those times, the American Occupation of the Philippines. It was through her leadership with help from her fellow women organization that the Filipino women were given the right to vote. Amazing, indeed!
      But, it would still be interesting to know what Leonarda Limjap contributed for our country, her own life story.

    As a Filipino Beauty Pageant enthusiast from the Philippines 🇵🇭 GMA Network I-Witness #IWitness #AngUnangReyna of Howie Severino a documentary tribute to the very first beauty queen 👑 of 1908, #ManilaCarnival Queen Pura Villanueva Kalaw (a Filipina feminist, journalist, and writer according to Wikipedia) from Iloilo City is a must watched among the Filipino beauty pageant aficionados. This is way before #MissUniverse #MissInternational and #MissWorld were born. She was born on 27th August, 1886 and passed away on 21st March, 1954 even before the first Filipina Miss International 1964 Gemma Cruz-Araneta and the first Filipina Miss Universe 1969 Gloria Diaz were crowned.

    Very Great docu sir Howie.. this is a great story of Madam Pura Villanueva Kalaw..i remember the time when I was grade two when my teacher said that it was during Manuel Quezon time signed a law allowing women to vote..I didnt know that it was Queen Pura's effort... i love also the comparison of Queen Pura to Queen Catriona..Queen Catriona have the guts to run for a senator so to have a more wider Voice in the Country and in the world and her advocacy more be heard and be a more Productive Queen not only in one year but all through out her time
