    Thanks! My BCT15X is coming in about a week. I am retiring my Radio Shack 2006 which is 29 years old! I realized that this was a totally new system and I wanted to do some homework before it gets here. Your video is really great. I am starting to understand how the new system works. This is the third time I have played it for my memory challenged 81 year old brain! My gosh, it is starting to sink in! 😀

    One observation I've made that works well for me... When naming something, it's easier to start from nothing, than to change what's there. When you get to the default name, press the decimal/No "." twice and it will clear what's in there. Then you start from scratch and it will always start from previous character when you go to the next character position. YMMV, but my brain just works faster under those circumstances.

    Hello sir! I’m reprogramming my BCT15X and using your video to do so. Low and behold I find out you are in Visalia, Ca! I just moved to Porterville 2 weeks ago. Your video is very thorough and I applaud that. It’s wild to me that you are local to my area. Thank you for the excellent how to.

    My BCT15X got delivered today and it was amazing to see that there was no quick setup manual, zip, nada! I mean NOTHING. Well, I got it setup OK on my desk and then used your videos to start programming it. Thank the powers that be that your videos were there! I continually paused and backed up so that I was able to program a few items. Without your video helping me I would have landed in the funny farm! Tomorrow will be a fun day getting more channels programmed.
    Thanks loads, you are the man!

    Finally! A man of my own age who shows how it's done!
    I have a 996T which I just bought from a ham buddy. Just today, I read the 154 page instruction booklet TWICE and still haven''t learned in words I understand [plain English] how to access the reprogrammed frequencies. I did manage to noodle out how to find and hear(!) my local NWS station.
    Is it safe for me to assume that much of the "conventional" frequency programming steps [for me mostly Cal-Fire, USFS, etc] are close/identical to the steps you are showing in this BCT15X video?
    Thank you for sharing this invaluable information with this "technically challenged" senior!

    Thanks a lot for posting. I haven't been able to listen to most of my hometown PD frequencies with my analog scanners. So I'm acquiring this UNIDEN BCT15X. I noticed the communications gear inside the patrol cars are Motorola, so I assume they moved to trunking. Problem is that I abhor having to deal with programming. But thanks to your videos I may overcome this rejection and maybe even put my SDR receiver to better use.

    8:43 How did you know that the channel was DCS instead of CTCSS, and where did you get the channel code?
    I've found the frequencies for my county, but this is my first scanner in years so I'm still learning the basics. I've read the definitions for each acronym but I'm not sure how to find the right information. My last scanner was a Radio Shack model from 2000 or so and I had help programming it. I will say however, it always caught every EMS and fire call in our county.

    • @TheErod1944Channel
      @TheErod1944Channel  Před 7 lety +1

      THE MEANING OF THE DCS CODES: Most 2-way radios as well as transmitting and receiving voice also transmit a digitized code which you can't hear. The code read by the radio and if correct will turn on a switch to allow audio to hit your speaker.
      If there is no code or a wrong code on the signal you are receiving (or in your radio) then you won't get any receive audio. For example; If your buddy has his radio set for DCS code 205 on a given frequency then your radio must also be set for DCS 205 on that same frequency (transmit and receive) in order for you to hear his calls. The same goes for him. He must have DCS 205 set transmit and receive.
      There is however an option where you and your buddy decide to not use a DCS code. The condition called Carrier Squelch. In that condition, no matter what comes in on your frequency (including noise & weirdo radio ops) will be heard out of your speaker. No code is transmitted from the radio.
      CTCSS (also called PL) operates identically to DCS except a series of low frequency tones are used to activate the speaker switch ie; 107.2 Hz, 100 Hz and so on rather than digital codes.
      You would use DCS OR CTCSS but not both.
      I need to know if you're using Freescan software or trying to program the radio from the radio panel to answer the rest of your question.

      Let me ask you a question because I don't know what your understanding is, and I don't mean to be insulting but can you tell me when you mention TONES, are you thinking about CTCSS tones or Motorola 2-tones like on the list found on the following link?

      I would say I am above average in knowledge. Just not with this scanner. I am referring to the motorola 2 tone fire tone out with this scanner. Although I may have found my problem. In the settings of the fire tone out I had the volume of the 2 tone page set on 0. I have changed this to 6 and I am now just waiting for my Fd to get a call to see if this fixes my problem. In general with this scanner, When it is scanning conventional frequencies and it receives a motorola 2 tone it should set the alert on the scanner to go off? Am I thinking correctly? So saying I have everything set up correctly. Thanks Dargent222@gmail.com

    • @TheErod1944Channel
      @TheErod1944Channel  Před 8 lety

      OK. That's all I need to know.
      I'm presently fooling around with the 2-tone alarm thing on my BCT-15X and expect to figure it out. It's an interesting problem and after working with the scanner last night, I've got it alarming -tone & flash - on incoming 2-tone pages. I just don't know exactly why yet.
      I'm not sure yet it the unit will alarm to 2-tone detection in the SCAN MODE or if it has to stay in that TONE-OUT mode looking for 1 of the 10 tone selections (on a single RF Frequency) to arrive.
      If you get it working on a REGULAR SCAN MODE let me know. I plan to make a video as soon as I'm confident that I understand all the qualities of the TONE-OUT thing..

While in the scan mode listening to all your different conventional frequency channels you can NOT get the Fire Tone Out Page to work. You will hear the tone and the dispatch but will not be alerted. If you want to be alerted you have to be in the Tone Out Standby mode only. Again Thank you for the helpful websites.

    how do you know whether it is a dcs channel or a ctss channel and what the code is?

    • @TheErod1944Channel
      @TheErod1944Channel  Před 8 lety

      +MoToLoVeR95 When you get to the spot on the channel programming where you enter the CTCSS or DCS codes, look for the SEARCH OPTION. It will appear in both the FreeScan and Manual programming processes. If you select SEARCH rather than CTCSS or DCS, inputs, the information you're looking for will appear on your screen in the SCAN/SEARCH mode when the channel becomes active. Something like c123.0 or dcs054 will appear and that's what you're looking for on that particular channel.
      At that point you have to go back into the programming mode and switch your SEARCH input to CTCSS or DCS according to what you see on the screen. In Freescan, the SEARCH option is down the drop-down menu between CTCSS tones and DCS Codes.
      Some channels, particularly in the Ham Bands may not have transmit CTCSS or DCS and will not put a reading on your scanner screen.
      Let me know if that works for you.

      If you go to radio reference and then look at the input under where it says “tone” it will say either PL or DPL. For example if you pause the video at 3:24 you will see lots of frequencies listed. Those that list a PL under “Tone” are CTCSS. DPL is a DCS

      One way is to Reset the Scanner to it's "new condition".
      To do that while the scanner is off, press 2, 9 and Hold simultaneously and turn the scanner on. It'll go through some "reset stuff" and come back to life as if it was "new out of the box".
      You can also delete by deleting Systems in the manual programming mode.
      With the Free "Freescan" software from radioreference.com you can easily delete the channels via a computer.
