- Toby Gutermuth and his friend were in Fort Armistead Park in Baltimore early Tuesday morning when they witnessed a cargo ship hit the Francis Scott Key Bridge, causing it to collapse. (Video provided by Toby Gutermuth via Associated Press)

So sad. My heart goes out to all the families who lost loved ones in this tragedy. I pray this never happens again. Horrible to watch

I can’t even fathom witnessing this on video let alone what it would be like in person. I drove on that bridge every day for three months when I lived in Baltimore.

They sent a mayday which alerted bridge control who stopped the flow of traffic and attempted to clear out the contractors. Saved many lives.
it happend in just 2 minutes, loss of power, drop anchor, call mayday and scramble to figure out power.
The captain was allegedly scrolling through Buzzfeed while sailing the cargo ship. He apparently forgot to use the emergency shofar…

tugs had already left the ship as it was up to power in the channel, they probably dropped anchor when they lost power, and anchor took a bit to catch and when it did it directed them into bridge supports

This happened years ago on I-40 in Oklahoma. River barge hit a bridge and sent people in their vehicles plunging into the rushing river.

Transformers, more than likely. You can see the electricity fail in segments as the bridge collapses.
What hasn’t really been discussed is how the back or side span on north side came up, then came back down smashed the northern most pier truss pier, which then ended up taking down three full spans of continuous steel girders right back to the expansion joint. You can see it occur in the other video but here is where you see the full impact of it. This collapse will be studied by CEE students for the rest of time.

Did anyone notice how the ship hit the pillar and then the whole entire bridge collapsed but it's still pretty crazy that ship accidentally hit a bridge and was trying to hold it up for a second but still how it took out the pillar. Then it collapsed and then the power went out on the ship

Looks like the concrete bolder wasn't mounted into the ground seems like it was just under the bridge standing up holding the bridge up by the Weight and strength of the Pillars cause it went down like it was just standing up under the bridge with no support mounted into the ground they really had the pillars just standing up under the bridge holding it up just by the weight how dumb no protection borders in the water to keep the boats away from the pillars is dumb and where ate the emergency tug boats that usually guid it past that point and no coast guards available or near by but let someone would of been fishing and kept a smaller size fish then the recommendations they would be there like u did a homicide in the water
