      @carellicollectables Před 5 lety +129

      Yeaaaa the issue with these knock-off brands is rarely their LOOK - it's more often the quality of the parts themselves. The tolerances and quality of the plastic are not as good, so you get a lot more bent plates, more loose-fitting connections between parts, etc. Lego spends a lot of R&D money on making sure all their parts are made to fit together really well with just the right amount of clutch power to hold a model together, where as the knock-off brands will often be way too loose to keep connected OR so tight they're difficult to snap together and then nearly impossible to take back apart.

    Hey. So I wanted to come back to this video, since I saw it some time ago. Due to the prohibitive price of the Town Hall modular on the secondary market, I very warily decided to try to purchase the Lepin version. And I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. No missing pieces and, once I linked it with the rest of my modular sets, it’s hard to tell the difference. The build is sturdy and fits perfectly. The one noticeable difference is in the mini figs, but that’s minor. At some point, I may purchase one of their original modulars and see how that goes. Just thought I would share. My experience was clearly much better than yours. Cheers.

    I Bought the Lepin UCS Star Destroyer a couple years ago. (I don't have friends you see, so I dont have to be embarrassed about having lepin on display)
    Only issues were that the magnets were a bit too powerful, and a few of the technic pin connectors were a bit loose. Also the two spherical radar domes on the bridge were a different piece than what lego used, and I had to buy a lego Data sheet sticker cause the lepin one said "Star Plan" instead of "Star Wars".
    The vast majority of the bricks, plates, and technic pieces were near indistinguishable from their original Lego counterparts, and the ship looked awesome once built. I've since bought the New UCS Lepin Millennium Falcon, and it is amazing. Also cost like a fifth of the price of the Official one...

    To be fair I get most of these issues with lego sets every once in a while, heads stuck in helmets for example. It's rarer perhaps but it's not really super rare to get the wrong part, or missing parts, or parts with the wrong tolerance. I don't have this exact set, and the quality of lego is definitely generally better, as although these problems happen they don't happen as much, but the gap isn't as huge as most people think imo.

    if i'm completely honnest, I've been building legos for the last 15 years, mostly lego star wars, 2 years ago i got my first Lepin Set which was the millenium falcon from TFA (75105), yes the pieces do not fit as well as the lego ones do, but dude I paid 35 euros for a set worth 169 ! honnestly for the price I was more than convinced, it's the price I paid for the official Lego Yoda Huth (75208) ! So don't take my words wrong i'm still prefering real Legos and I only have 2 Lepin sets as now, but considering how lego prices (especially star wars sets) are becomming absurdly expensive if you compare to 10 years ago, i'm definitely having other Lepin sets.

  • @bcastromusic
    @bcastromusic Před 5 lety +1

    All Lego & Lego clones have those marks on some of the studs. These areas are the 'gate' where the plastic is injected through a 'hot runner' feed system. If you look carefully at the Lego part you will also see gate marks, they're just cleaner. Injection moulding ABS is not as simple as it might seem, it requires knowledge & skill to design the mould cavity, plate & ejector system properly as well as very detailed control over the feed system, temperature, cooling etc.. Lego has perfected the process. Some clone parts will also put their logo on the studs and/or have better looking gate marks. Most clone parts don't put the logo on the stud and have a more conservative design by the gate (hence the more visible cavity) because it's more forgiving and everything won't have to be perfect.

      @Mike__B Před 5 lety +5

      @@oceanlikethewaves oh absolutely you are paying extra for quality control, and I happily do/will pay for that as long as it's still being manufactured i.e. not 3rd party sellers trying to turn toys into an investment (that's a rant for another day).
      But my point is moving factories from Denmark to China is definitely a cost savings move, and that will most assuredly be a MAJOR cost savings move. Just looking at their statistics from 2018, sales grew 3 percent, while profits grew 4 percent from 2017. Now I'm not saying they're not allowed to make money, but it does hint at their operating costs being lower but instead of that helping out consumers it simply lines the pockets of investors (real ones, not ones that buy all the sets in a store of a big kit).

    Real Lego tolerances aren't that great either. The heads do indeed get stuck inside the helmets, many hinges and snap-on folding pieces are also loose on Lego sets, and the fact that you got your fingerprints on the glue part of a clear sticker is not a Lepin issue. You got over 90% of Lego quality for under a third of the price.

    Of course your son liked it, i would have also when i was that age as it doesnt matter the namebrand as a kid, it just matters that its fun , neat and cool.
    With that set, it can be a engineering teaching experience.
    As when i was a kid i would find the flaws in a lego design and redesign it where needed and make it better and give something movement where it was solid, or make something look nicer or figure out how to make something more stable and secure by dismantling partly and experiment with different changes and utilize pieces in different ways than usual. There wasnt a lot of unique pieces until the Space command series came out and the other fantasy themed sets.
    I wouldve loved to have a lot of these newer Marvel playsets and StarWars and Jurassic Park and Medieval knights sets back when i was a kid,but they didnt have that sort of licensing way back then.
    They just had the Space Command sets as the big novel new thing and i think they were doing the pirates and Medieval times sets into the 80s. I cant recall exactly.
