I’m like Doknow my parents didn’t know English so my fist language was Spanish but in school they teach English so me and my sibling would only speak English with each other but to our parents Spanish. Our parent now understand English but can’t speak it that well. They are still trying to learn it tho. I can speak and write fluently in both English and Spanish.

We were the first people bombed on the American continent by the Mexican government. Some of us fled north as refugees and settled in Arizona tohonoodham territory as well as California/Texas and other states in Mexico due to the displacement(slavery/extermination )of our tribe by the Mexican government . Being from Phoenix, a lot of my Mexican partners would teach me, not only how to speak Spanish, but how to speak it properly. They would clown me if I pronounced words like a "white boy" would. It’s good to know to be cultured and all that but you gotta realize that in America and especially during our K-12 years, speaking fluent Spanish literally serves NO PURPOSE. Even the Spanish classes in high school are a totally different type of Spanish. Like I said, good to know and be cultured but being ‘cultured’ can’t be at the top of your priority list in America past the year 2001

But regardless of that, Spanish is incredibly useful in most states when it comes to employment. Even states without a native Hispanic population has tons of seasonal migrants coming through, speaking Spanish is a major asset. In many states, if you don't know Spanish you will lose out on a lot of business. Not to mention all the business you gain from Hispanic customers who always appreciate being treated as equals. The idea that Spanish isn't useful for branding or academics is also laughable from the state I reside in, and we aren't even close to the most Hispanic states.

My Mom is Mexican and My dad is Black af and he taught himself spanish while in the military and I was never taught Spanish but Every weekend we would go to Tijuana to visit family and I just eventually picked it up. Some kids just aren’t taught the language unfortunately.

@@jvmartiniano you can't always blame the person tho. I've met immigrant parents who are in a rush to "Americanize" their kids that they push them to learn English first instead of Spanish. Other times our own family puts us down for not speaking it very well and we're made to feel shame causing us to abandon it. That was the case for me when I was little and would visit travel with my parents to their country, my Spanish speaking cousins were brutal but thankfully I stuck with it and am now fluent

When it comes to making money, companies work with other companies they can’t understand, and they need someone that does understand. Thats where ive come in. And its been very lucrative. And not only that but, alot of the youth in my tribe, do not know the language. The older generation ONLY speaks the language. Theres a big cultural gap between the past couple generations. As someone who can be on both sides, i can help others in my tribe learn how to speak zuni AND english/spanish.
