It’s the “today” where I totally lose it.

Gauntlet is a French word meaning "glove", while "gantlet" came from a Swedish word for something you had to run through as punishment. So, the meanings for the word "gauntlet" come from two words of entirely different origins, combined into one by people that confused the two.
No clue _why_ they decided to use the archaic spelling, though.
French word is "gantelet", to be more exact. And for the curious, the word that directly translate to "glove" is "gant".
