    As Thomas mentions, the brass from your brush transfers to the piece. Does this provide any sort of corrosion protection at all or is it purely cosmetic? I frequently use vinegar to remove light rust from various tools and parts and I use a brass brush on them. I also get the same sort of thin brass wash like coating on the pieces, but I always coat them in oil so never tested to see if there is any corrosion inhibiting properties.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Před 4 lety

      If you ever want anything, just let me know. Rust is a real issue out here in Taiwan. Just daily use will help prevent a lot of rust. And I also spray and rub my anvils down with WD-40 every now and then. Thanks.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  Před 4 lety +2

      I use 1018 mild carbon steel for my tongs and rivets. I don't make knives but if I were to do so regularly, I think I might just use high carbon steel like 1095. Exotic alloys are less forgiving to my simpler approach to blacksmithing. Thanks.

    It struck me that you could easily make & offer a combination punch/drift (4:00). You could have a punch on one side, and a drift on the other. Granted, you would lose a handle eye for hanging, but it could still be hung on a pair of small pegs.
