What's NEXT After Investment Banking? | Exit Opportunities EXPLAINED

- You got into investment banking. What's next? In this video, I cover the most common exit opportunities that I've seen people in banking go into - namely, private equity, venture capital, hedge fund and corporate development (in addition to others such as asset management, equity research, investor relations, and so on and so forth).
Just want to say that there are set "common" exit opportunities after investment banking, but in reality, the possibilities are endless. You don't have to narrow yourself to a career in finance if you don't think that's for you. Go enter that reality tv show you've always wanted to do. Take a year off - you worked hard, you deserve it. Go to med school. Become an Esports commentator. Live your dreams. But, if you are interested in continuing in the field of finance, lucky for you that's what most investment bankers continue to do, and there are plenty of resources for what those are, and how you can get there.
As always, thank you guys so much for watching this video and I hope it was helpful! If you enjoyed it, please remember to give it a thumbs up, subscribe to my channel if you haven't already, and turn on the bell for notifications so you'll know whenever I post a new video.

Amazing as always!
Aw thanks so much Kshitiz!
Consulting is a popular option in india after IB. Maybe just because the infra for other options you mentioned ain't that great in India. Great video and you covered the actual facts 👍
Ah makes sense, interesting to hear!
Great video! Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching!
Thanks for sharing!

Hi Angela, can you do a video on work clothes: where you shop & what to wear for different occasions for female analysts? I'm starting my placement internship and am looking for tips! thanks!
Yes! Have a video that covers that linked here, but planning to do a lookbook as well: czcams.com/video/DGsR5Tr6zcU/video.html
Great video as usual! 😊💕
Thanks so much Amal! 😊
Like the backdrop haha nice to see you seem to have gotten out of the city!
Thank you! And yes I have! Haha change of scenery for a bit
Angela do you think the IB work hours is sustainable? are you going to look into one of these exist opportunities soon?
Not sustainable forever but I do think it gets better as you rise up the ranks
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Hey Angela...
I Niket Soni from India 🇮🇳 , an IB aspirant, you really make nice and very informational videos, love your content..👍👍
Thanks so much, Niket! Wish you the best of luck with everything!
Can you do a video explaining the different departments and roles in an investment bank? Great Video btw! :)
Absolutely and thank you!
Thank you Angela, I like your video explanations. So well to understand.
Hi Angela,
Great video! Thank you for explaining.
Would you mind going a bit more into detail on the 2+2+2 route? What do people usually do after their MBA? Something completly different like corporate positions?
It really ranges after MBA! Entrepreneurship, corporate, investing roles - all possible
have you ever seen an investment banker go on to do law? also - can you become and associate or higher without climbing the hierarchy?
You can join as an associate post MBA (or join from other finance careers into higher positions). Yes, I have seen investment bankers go on to do law.
Enjoy your content, thanks
Thanks for watching!
Made very good points here :). Some of my take after been in IB. Exit EARLY esp if you dont get to do M&A deals.
ECM and DCM transactions largely involve paper pushing and useless Due Diligence. I am sorry but no one needs paper pushers in a PE fund or etc. Of course there is some paper pushing in PE but that is a seperate matter.
In corp dev you have the chance to climb into the corporate structure. You literally become the pesky clients of IB ordering the IB MDs around on transactions (a bit of a sweet revenge here).
PE is definitely a good exit but a lot of nuances in the market depending on your juniority, fund hierarchy, etc. It is very difficult to say whether it will be better for you IMO
Thank you for your points! Curious how long you ended up staying in IB?
@@angelasunx3 2 years only. Had to move on after awhile
@@spaghettiravioli1470 2 years is pretty standard!
@@angelasunx3 yep learnt as much as I could in the industry
@@spaghettiravioli1470 Can I ask what you do now?
How can there be time for on cycle recruiting and interviews for PE alongside the already busy investment banking work schedule.
It's exhausting! You just have to study with what free time you have on the weekends / any downtime during the week.
@@angelasunx3 are you allowed to leave the desk for interviews or do you have to keep it a secret from your firm haha
@@trapitusaventurez2190 Depends on how open the firm is haha but for most I'd say the latter
So informative :0
Thank you! 😊
Hi Angela do Private equity needs masters or MBA for entry level positions?
Nope not needed
Hi Angela I actually graduated late at age 25 now I am trying to work for 2 years and join MBA which will also take 2 years so that I can get into investment banking associate position . After working 2 -3 years as a investment banking associate I want to join private equity entry level position. At that time I may be 32 or 33 do you think I am still able to join private equity?
@@pembasherpa3601 It's possible, but usually PE firms hire more from the analyst class rather than associate class (less spots, but there are some)
Does getting into a top private equity and investment banking firm guarantee you a spot for Harvard Wharton MBAs?
Doesn't guarantee a spot, but helps
what about product management or public relations manager or sales manager
Possible to go into those, but not as popular routes from what I've seen
@@angelasunx3 That seems like a route I would like to go into and I wanted to ask how exactly that would work.
@@oluwadurotimiadebiyi3223 I don't know too much about those routes, so it'd be difficult for me to say unfortunately
How often do people get fired from IB?
A few per level every year usually
First-year analyst getting staffed on a buyside pitch for 2 weeks
Same analyst: "potential" leveraged buyout for a paper packaging conglomerate; responsible for constructing the comparable company, sum of the parts, DCF analyses, as well as building the LBO assuming a purchase premium of X, target leverage of Y, and equity contribution of Z to arrive at a MoM and IRR range of A-D and E-H, respectively.
PE Interviewer: is it live?
Analyst: 😅😅😅
Analyst: "Announcing in a couple of weeks"
@@angelasunx3 "The CEO (cough cough I mean the treasurer) is extremely engaged and this could go live any moment!"
@@newyorkgumgum9960 Haha meanwhile no follow up to the pitch ever
@@angelasunx3 Not everyone is working at Goldman TMT/MS M&A/ CS Sponsors....😂😂😂
My friend who worked at GS TMT never closed a M&A deal the 3 years he was there, and he still landed a mega gig. I guess it's all about how you spin your potential deals given how early recruiting starts these days!
Great response! Never lie to your interviewer. They always know the live deals in the market. Finance is a small world :)
I do see myself in PE or VC, but i need to figure out how to get in first.
That's great!
Same
Hi, Do you work in an industry or product group?
industry
@@angelasunx3 do you think you need to work in a certain product group or industry group to be able to move into PE? For example, do PE only hire from M&A and LevFin?
@@matthew1465 Nope easy to go into PE from an Industry group
Software developer at an investment bank - 2nd highest salary in the bank from the start of your career at 22 - but with a 9-5pm job so excellent work life balance. IB's, Lawyers make more for sure but only when they hit 35+ by which time you've had a 13 year head start.
That's awesome!
I ll revisit this after 10 years. 😅
10?!
@@angelasunx3 maybe, I will grad from univ in 25 and by 30 I ll have decent exp in finance sector if everything goes well. ✌️
@@ascendingboy.7706 Don't forget to comment again when you rewatch this in 10 years :)
@@angelasunx3 sure thing 👍
Will also have to wait until I get into IB first to rewatch this, baby steps!
Private equity is mostly lucrative
Yep good pay in PE, especially if you continue forward in that field
Where do I earn most
Really depends on how successful you are in each, but straight off the bat likely PE
Private equity sounds so boring. I don't know why so many people are sooo intent on going into it! I find banking to be much more prestigious and have more meaningful work.
Haha yes! A lot of people are v intent on going into PE without a clear reason why
@@angelasunx3 I really enjoy finance and especially DCM and bonds because I get to use my Economics degree and macroeconomic interests everyday. Sometimes it's worth looking beyond the money, and look at your interests:)
