- Chalk is not just something Olympic weightlifters and Lebron James needs. Chalk is essential to consistently gain strength in the gym. That's why you see chalk in every Starting Strength Gym. If you go to a gym that doesn't have chalk or even worse doesn't allow it, that gym is limiting your progress and you shouldn't be training there. Ray Gillenwater has some tips on how to use chalk your first time in the gym as well as why you need to be using chalk when strength training.

I've tried chalk several times and just don't see the appeal at all, it tastes horrible
Mix with the gallon of milk
Great tips!
I’m very rural and only have one gym, it’s small and no chalk allowed. The closest metal head shack is 2 hours away. I just do my best with straps for now.
You should talk to the management. Make the case that, by disallowing chalk, they're increasing the likelihood of someone suffering an injury in their gym. People who get injured often get litigious. Periodic cleanup is a small price to pay to make customers safer.
Also, you could bring some liquid chalk with you. Gets the job done, and is more discreet than a chalk block. Ask for forgiveness rather than permission.
get liquid chalk and use it in secret.
2 words home gym
Build your own power rack
I go to commercial gyms and use liquid chalk. One of the gyms doesn't even have centre knurling on their bars so I avoid that one for squats.
Awesome!
Love your podcasts, videos, and book. F the haters. Thanks for all of the no-nonsense info Mark.
Great video, great Gina me great business idea
I thought this was going to be Rip yelling at us like in the how to load plates video
I wish
Ha …I was on of those people who did the Lebrun James .. thx for the video on chalk etiquette… all kidding aside .. I have mentholated chalk and it works great especially in the heat of summer 👍🏻on all
My lifts
How many grams per pound though?
The answer to any question that requires a numerical response is always 5.
Per pound lifted? Or pound of body weight? Of course the answer is still 5.
I use chalk all the time on the pull-up bar, nice to know I can start powdering the weight room too. I'll just say Rippentoe and co said so.
What about gloves?
I'll do what I want with the chaulk. I own the gym.
I benched 100kg at 70kg, started with barely bending barbell. Never used chalk in those commercial gyms since then. Yeah.
Then there is liquid chalk that does not leave dust. Yes it's more expensive but you don't give some whiny gym staff members the opportunity to complain about it.
Chalk is fucking great!
Leborn James should have cleaned the mess he made after the games.
I'm new to using chalk. Is it the same as chalk used on blackboards? Does it behave the same? I ask because blackboard chalk seriously dries the crap out of my skin making it crack split and peal...not pleasant at all. Options? Edit PS, handling lumber without a glove does the same thing.
It's not the same chalk, look for climbing/lifting/gym chalk
What lifts require chalk? Deadlifts obviously if grip strength is a factor, but chalk for squats as shown in the video? That seems unnecessary
I understand that the back is taking the weight, but if you let go of the bar it would still fall, so I imagine the chalk for the squat is just an extra safety precaution to make sure the bar doesn’t slip out of your hands. The same could be said for both pressing movements. Chalk is useful for accessory lifts such as the barbell row, and any variation movement.
It helps so that it doesnt roll off your back
My hands get sweaty and move slide around the bar more on bench and press, so i sometimes use chalk
Your grip needs to be narrow enough to create lateral tension in your hands. If your hands are sweaty, your grip will widen and you'll lose upper back tightness. Weak shelf + loose upper back = less mechanical efficiency and potentially an early plateau.
All of them. Bench, squat. Having a slippy sweaty bar can only be a negative. We do not want to add any variables to the exercises. Only 5lbs per workout.
She is so beautiful.
I'm a "he," thanks though.
lol Yes and the need for excuses when your customers fail and make your selling point for your product
Exactly. They either didn't drink their gallon of Starting Strength Milk or didn't use chalk!
Hardly ever see women using chalk. Don't understand why the floor around chalk stand looks like the floor in a New Orleans beignet shop. No reason for cube to be turned to dust.
I use liquid chalk for my deadlifts.
Don’t train your wife
Smart man.
@@xmoogoox Also, you gotta look up to go up.
I will believe anything that people repeat ad nauseam, especially if it rhymes.
@@xmoogoox Your leverages really come into play at about 260.
I like you.
I see people deadlifting in heeled weightlifting shoes. While obviously possible that doesn't seem optimal.
I see people having sex with your wife. While obviously possible that doesn't seem optimal.
my knee doesn't hurt when i use shoes with heels
@@andy-xz2uk fair enough 👍🏻
Its better than regular shoes still
What are the upsides and downsides?
Get your grip strong and you won't need chalk again. A few deadlifts double overhand a week is enough
Tell it to the pros... + Strenght vanishes with sweaty skin
This is incorrect.
No chalk needed means you're not lifting heavy enough
It's not nessesary.
It's only necessary if you want to get stronger.
@@xmoogoox my prs go brr
If you insist on only handling weights that you can safely control with sweaty, slippery hands, then you're not going to get stronger. Because the weight you can control with a slippery grip on the bar is a fraction of the weight you need to be moving in order to trigger a strength adaptation.
Does your wife have an onlyfans?
Girls can use Chalk only for one reason
not for barbells grabbing))
@Tiagito P Why not?
Gotta make sure the grip is firm and dry
