    Something that bothers me about minimalism as presented on the internet is that it seems to still promote consumerism. Minimalist CZcamsrs I've followed push products you don't need to replace things you already have that could serve the same purpose; all for the minimalist aesthetic. It's how they earn an income off of their channel. I'd like to see minimalist CZcamsrs only promote services.. like Audible and the like. Minimalism is important to me because of the earth, because of climate change, because of the harm caused by the production and waste of products and resources as well as the more personal life improvements that you talked about. I cringe to see brands producing and selling things like aesthetically pleasing glass jars to hold ours beans and rice instead of people just using the jars their groceries come in. It's very bothersome to me. For the people that get caught up in that aesthetic I think it is more trend than not. It's not very minimalist at all.

    Hi Ana, I'm often looked down on and criticized by family members because I live in a very modest house. It is very unusual and made with character and charm. It is wooden and a lot of craftsmanship went into it. So many people tell us to pull it down and build something bigger and newer. Because that is what everyone else is doing. No thankyou. My husband , children and I value the wooden trees and the work that went into building this lovely house. It is enough for us. To do anything else would be a waste.

    I look at it like this. I don't need a French horn to remind me of my son who played the instrument. As beautiful as the music is, I don't play it. It would be that visual clutter. What I DO have is his French horn mouthpiece. Small enough to tuck in my purse or pocket, and every time I touch it to my lips, it's like a kiss from him. That is meaningful.

    I am going to move from a house to an apartment by myself. I already planned to declutter way more than I have done so far. I was thinking first of getting the "minimalist look" with new furniture with clean lines, new dishes etc..and I realized how stupid that would be!!! My style is more ethnic and colourful and I am going to keep it. I am only going to keep the "stuff" I like the most and still declutter but I am staying true to myself!! Minimalism is not a particular style but a different way to live and deciding what and how much to own.

    I am not an example of a minimalist. But I follow one simple rule in my whole life - if it still works, use it. I still have already old smart phone (since 2014) but it's still working perfectly fine, along with the battery life. I get bullied by friends a lot about it but I am not changing it as long as it works. Same with a lot of other things, no matter if it is tech or non-tech.
    I also use jars that come with the groceries and packed food. I clean them to remove all labels and I use them for spices, food and storage.
    At the same time I still like shopping and had a long period as a shopaholic. I cluttered a lot but I use those things and they are still in a good shape and stand.
    I never liked the idea of throwing something away just because it is not trendy, or just worn for 2 seasons, or there is a newer one on the market. Recently I got inspired by the "no-buy-year" challenge but I doubt I would manage to completely do it. Still I decide to try and already almost one month I can see a significant difference in my mindset.

    Ana, it's really pleasant and tranquilizing listening to you. I have been trying minimalism, but it's not easy to do, especially when trying to get rid of clothes. I don't mind getting rid of furniture and knickknacks, etc., but clothing it's another story. It is so hard to give away or sell personal things that you have for years even though they will never be used. You are a person that inspire others to be true to themselves, and that is a great gift to have.
    Have a lovely day!

    Thanks for another wonderful video, Ana! I really appreciate your way of thinking of minimalism as a practice, rather than an aesthetic or an identity. I've felt quite alienated from the 'beige-linen-bamboo' style of minimalism that sort of permeates a lot of the online spaces, particularly because that involves a level of consumerism that I'm not comfortable with and certainly can't afford. This video and your previous videos in which you talk about reconciling your mindful and intentional minimalist practice with the habits that come from a childhood defined by scarcity and a limited income have been/will be really helpful to me in shaping my own minimalism. I've been trying to declutter for a few years but at the moment feel that I need to hold on to possessions due to the economic climate. In the UK we have been told that our energy bills and cost of living is going to rise exponentially. In April our energy bills will be double what they are now. I think it is wise to hold off getting rid of things for the time being but will put some items aside to part with when we know just how much more expensive our lives are going to get. I certainly think more clearly when not surrounded with 'stuff'. I may just have to put things in boxes and hide them away until the time is right to say goodbye to them for good. I hope you have a lovely day/evening Ana. x

    I deeply admire Viktor Frankl and his writing. I often lose sight that I have a space in which to choose my reaction, and just follow my impulse. I hope to change this. These videos on minimalism are so interesting to me. I grew up poor and yes, I struggle with fear of ‘running out’ of things. But I need to sell my house and move to another city for medical reasons, and I need to get rid of a lot of stuff. Do I really need 20 pairs of pants? I doubt it. I like everything about the idea of minimalism, except its name. I don't aim to have minimal as in the least, but to be more intentional about what I buy and keep. I would like to buy the best quality things, from ethical suppliers with the lowest carbon footprint when I do intentionally decide to buy, but I am often deterred by price. Secondhand is a good second. I often have the desire to get rid if things, like your dress - a decluttering high opposed to the dopamine high of shopping! Have a great week Ana

    Always a joy to find a new video from you Ana! I love your positive and thoughtful mindset. We are currently working on a major decluttering of our house-which can be painful and difficult at times- especially when one can see so many other potential uses for items (art projects in particular) We like re-purposing, but know we simply have accumulated too much. Of course I am gifting, donating and selling. Working on finding that balance! It is hard for me to be creative when I’m constantly managing stuff- if that makes sense. So, just know that your videos are encouraging and very much appreciated. Much love to you and Ulysses from k and a bunch of little furry beasts (🐈🐕) in the southern U.S.❣️

    Hiya Ana
    You have beautifully clarified everything that has been confusing me about Minimalism. If there’s one thing which is really cluttering the world at the moment it’s the surfeit big books/videos/expertise etc about Minimalism ( which for the most part are about living a life which is organised, frugal and orderly- and which often necessitates getting rid of superfluous possessions/ activities etc. that interfere with that goal. What I love about your take is that I believe it is centred more about the concept of simplicity- which for me resonates with a completely vibe. Minimalism smacks of rules (blended with an air of self-righteous superiority). Simplicity, on the other hand, describes something more pure and natural- where a flower, cloud etc exists without taint. The distinction is probably not important in the slightest- just an observation. Hope you are well and optimistic - take care, stay safe, stay positive! 💚🌻🌈⭐️💕🏔🌿🧡

Most coffee sold was fairtrade at one point, now it's all but vanished, despite the solid ethical reasons; most of the clothes sellers went bankrupt, it's impossible for me to get most clothes fairtrade any more after 2-3 decades of being able to. So informative, Ana. I love this video. I struggle with gifts and knickknacks that are given to me as gifts by family members. Some I love and they serve a purpose, but some I don't really like or don't go with my decor but I feel guilty if I get rid of them. It's hard to know what to do.

    Two years ago I was watching "Hoarders" and started to become uneasy. I live in a two-bedroom condo and since my daughter married and left, I have the second bedroom closet full of Christmas decorations (in large containers) and I have containers (marked by type) of fabric for my quilting. I then went through my house and made five trips to Salvation Army and other places. My mother was a hoarder, which I always found unacceptable. I also can't be minimalist due to my love of fabric and quilting. I watch those shows on tiny homes and wonder how they decorate for holidays and how do they do their hobbies, etc? People come to my home and call me a minimalist due to not having a lot of furniture, but I like to make cleaning easy and be able to walk through my home easily. I don't have clutter, but I have to have my books and fabric.

    • @anagoldberg
      @anagoldberg  Před 2 lety +1

      We choose which spheres to keep minimalist and which not. I'm the same with my art/hobby supplies. They bring me joy and excitement to live.

    • @yuliyaivanova7949
      @yuliyaivanova7949 Před 2 lety +3

      With respect, your home as you are describing it sounds pretty minimalist to me. 🙂 There seems to be a common misconception that people who have a hobby or a collection cannot be minimalist, but the whole point of minimalism is to get rid of what doesn't add value to your life in order to make room for what does. If having a closet full of fabric adds value to your life, then it does not contradict the minimalist idea - at least, not the minimalist idea as it should be.
      I consider myself on the path towards living a minimalist life, but I have probably hundreds of books (I haven't counted them) and the only reason I don't have more is the constraint of money and physical space. 😅 As Ana says, minimalism should be a guide, not an exclusive label or a straightjacket.

      If quilting brings you joy, don't get rid of all of your supplies. You can gift finished quilts to family, friends, many different charities, or sell them too.
      Maybe even start a channel teaching quilting.

      @@lynnegordon6749 No, I'm not getting rid of my quilting supplies at all. Before I retired I bought lots of patterns and fabric and have them all organized and will work on these projects until I die, then my daughter, who is also a quilter, will have them. The embroidery went to charity, though. I'm not really into that as I was when younger.

    I love your answers to the questions about minimalism What's minimal is truly defined by each person who goes that route.
    For me, minimalism is freedom. I feel weighed down by stuff. For a 9 year period in my life, I only owned a suitcase and a bag. I felt as light as a bird. As I'm writing this, I realize that I have not been asking quite the right questions when decluttering. For me, it is not so much about "Does it bring me joy?" or "Do I need this?" For me the question is: "Does this weigh me down and would I feel lighter if it were gone?" Thank you for the great inspiration, it unearthed something very important which I had overlooked.

    Several years ago I started to declutter. I’m still finding things to let go of. The point is not throwing away or donating or selling just to fill the void again with different clutter. Find peace with what you have and let go that which causes lack of peace.

    Wonderful video as always!! I really loved that dress, it's exactly what I wanted for a long time :)). I'm glad you are happy with your decision of letting it go and happy it went to the lady with the similar name ^_^. I finally decluttered my pajama and homewear drawer and it's so hard to let go of some items that I loved so much over the years, they're just not fitting me anymore or are just too used :)). You're right, we become so attached to our material items, we infuse them with emotions and that's what's hard to let go of. Maybe we can look at this like being a form of self-love? When we put on clothes that we love maybe it can also be an act of self-love and that's why we should keep only things that give us that feeling. And it';s so true that there are so few things that truly have that meaning in our lives. I've recently heard this from someone: saying no to something can sometimes mean saying yes to yourself.
