- In 2008 I visited the North-East and whilst at the MetroCentre shopping centre I spent a short while at Metroland, which was an indoor all-weather funfair.
Filmed with a digical camera that also does video, albeit only 8 bit mono sound, which is a shame, especially as the sound there was so loud that it overwhelmed the camera's sound system... at least the pictures are nice.
As the comments point out, Metroland has now been closed, so this film is now an historical record of something that is 'no more'.
btw, this shopping centre is only served by mainline trains and buses - ie: NOT the Tyne and Wear Metro.
This was the highlight of my childhood, since im older it would be so great to do this again
I hate how the metrocentre and Eldon square have become full of expensive restaurants to replace this
Facts!
It's now cinema
we used to go here all the time living in Newcastle just 5 minutes away from the MetroCentre centre they need to bring this place back watching this video brings back loads of memories.
I was sad to see it close - I think more people liked it as a funfair than it is now
Went here many times, this video brings it all back. Always got a thrill out of hearing that rollercoaster thundering down the tracks. The Metro has never been the same since they closed Metroland down. Thanks so much for sharing this.
had a nostalgia session all day, passing you over to my good friend isaac (big house) Some of the best saturdays of my childhood were spent in the metroland, even now, laughter echo's through that part of the metro centre yet no smiling faces follow them :'( and now to jack..... " ahhh the metroland, not a day goes by when those bitter sweet words do not utter my mouth, a marvelous, elegant and majestic land! i only wish to ride the roller coaster one last time."
Im sorry mum.
I wish I was born earlier but at least the rest of the metro centre is out there for me!
I can’t believe it’s 10 years gone last month since the Theme Park closed permanently and I can still see it in my memory where the place was located.
r.i.p metroland :,(
I used to love going here then after I always went to the McDonald’s next to it & Toys R Us in the retail park near it when I was little
Ah Metroland, many happy memories. Used to love the Quasar Laser place downstairs, too. Such a shame they closed it
what a legendary place this was
Sadly i remember this when i was 4 with my sister and uncle went there :( miss that so so so much
The coaster is still going, at the Big Sheep in Devon, they bought it, same layout. Been recently with my kids, thought I recognised it. I was on that ride in 1990 and had the chance to do it again, great.
I used to go hear from the age of 9 to 30. I never stopped crying when they shut it down 😢
Some very good times working there with some very good peeps(Whimsy).
Brings back good memories
Was replaced with another boring cinema about 5 years ago, such a shame! The restaurant eatery just outside metroland as you went into the mall itself; Clockworks, was also demolished.
yeah I never even got chance to go and I live in the northeast it was knocked down when I was in middle school
This brings back memories. Thanks for uploading!
Bring back memory xxxxx ❤
I loved this when I was a toddler I'd only went on the spooky train it's such a shame I never got to grow yo go on a good ride😢
Yeah same 😢😢😢
FUCKING MISS THIS PLACE MAN. R.I.P.
awww i miss metro land !! :( it was amazin !!!! still love the new pictures!!
I loved Metroland! Absolutely gutted it was closed :-(
Metroland was defiantly the place to go at the time. It used to generate quite a lot of customers to the Metro Centre itself. My school had their annual summer trip there before the holidays every year and it was wicked.
Metroland believe it or not was not owned by the Metro Centre, the theme park itself was owned by a different company, who rented the space that Metroland was on.. I am not sure why Metroland closed in 2008 but there are rumours that the company that owned Metroland was in finical trouble and could not afford to pay the rent so Metro Centre give them notice. I do no Metro Centre decided to build the new Yellow Mall thats there know instead of renting the space to one person.
It would be good if Metro Centre decided to build an extension on to the place and make a new Metroland but who knows what will happen.
Michael Renwick it was sadly the roller coaster and it was just never going to stay my Mam worked there and told me.
True and at the time Metro Land generated tons of customers to the Metro Centre itself. As I said my school had its summer trip there every year and it was awesome. Some of the old Metro Land rides still exist today in the Namco Scape arcade in the yellow mall.
The main problem is that the MetroCentre is now owned by Intu. Who also manages several shopping centres across the country. Since it's owned by Intu, decisions like this are unlikely. It's sad,as I was only 8 or 9 when it closed and I miss it.
@@SenorJagWireintu no longer owns it now!
What a shame it's not there now. Would love my daughter to of experienced it.
The memories 😭
i love this video i miss metro land! so many memorys!
Oh dear, this is a shame.
I just looked on their website and saw that they are building something new to replace it. this will include a multi-screen cinema, which means that they will earn more money from the space.
So my film is now of historic interest. I wish I had filmed more...
Simon.
I miss Metroland!
Every time I went to the yellow mall at the metro centre I would hear people screaming when they were on the rollercoaster, for I feel so old lol
What an amazing place this was as a kid!
I used to go there nearly every year at Christmas throughout the 90s. Great place. I hated shopping so this was a fun place to go while the adults did the boring stuff
My childhood was metroland❤
Same
Class act some very good times working there with some very good peeps(WHIMSY)
I'm 13 and used to go to metro land all the time!
So gutted got rid of this back in 2008 we had our son in 2016 and age is now would been good to go xx
Mine were born in 2010 and 2012, they'd absolutely love it. Such a shame it's gone. I actually got emotional watching another video before this. The music they had put on it was deliberately to make us cry I reckon 😂 seeing the escalators going into the place proper got to me.
@Melody Valentine Should have kept it that bit longer then get shot if had to in 2018 before all the above happened xx
I remember going there in the 80's + 90's
loved this fun fair brought back amazing memories i hate namco which replaced metro land not in the same place but still was meant to for fill the experiance of the one and only metroland. i never got to go on that roller coster i was to young
Lucy is right I felt that vibration on the blue quadrant. for fifteen years.Walter Homma
the rollercoaster was amazing and the Walter
I went there in 1988.
It was utter madness getting rid of Metroland. The centre is not the same anymore and it's not unique anymore either. Now it's just your average shopping centre sadly. Lots of closed up shops now due to high rents. When this place closed the decline sadly started and has continued. I remember when this place had an antique village along with a Roman forum and all the water features and foliage. The place now looks bare and lifeless.
I'm so sad to read this - when it opened The Metro Centre was something wonderful and the themed areas (not just Roman Forum) were so special. Then there was Metroland - free to enter and a fantastic attraction that would have made children ask their parents to come here so that they could visit it. Especially on a cold wet winter day must have been wonderful to visit this indoor funfair.
I wish I could go there I was 1 at the time but they filled it up with expensive restaurants
Memories :'(
I know
i went here when i was young, this is the first that I'm hearing that its gone, I'm so sad!
I loved this place, however I was too young and small for the roller coaster and never got the chance to go on it :-( I dearly miss Metroland
This was my happy place...
A lot of people loved it - and still would, today. If only it was still there!
My childhood 🙏🏻
Are! !!! I renember this!!!! I went there when I was just a little lass!!!!!
+jammiedodger Same rip..
DubstepGirl u Geordie?
I used to go to metroland every Friday with my dad when I was a kid
I remember coming here when I was younger and I went on a ride with my dad but I don't know which one
I remember that place, I was sad that the Odeon Cinema replaced it in 2009
I Wish it was brought back brings back alot of memories i also had my birthday there when i was 8 i think!
citytransportinfo, with this being 4 years old they've now build the Yellow Mall and the Showcase Cinema De Lux along with a food court and large arcade like you'd find on the promenade at Tyneside.
I miss the dragon that was hung up
sooo small and fuck all to do, but is extremely entertaining, one of a kind, especially now it gone
what a shame!
i used to go a lot when i lived in englad, too bad it´s gone now :(
so many good memories!
I miss this :(
miss this place so much!!! mehhh childhood!
Metroland was awesome =)
Used to come to this place for mates birthday parties when i was like 7 and 8 used to remember finding the place pretty fucking scary at the time lol
Awwww I miss metro land :(
why did they have to get rid of metroland for a cinema they already have a cinema! :(
That was a week day! Metroland on a Saturday was a different Metroland from the weekday Metroland! For starters no one was skiving off school in the arcades on a Saturday lol
Saturdays was probably too crowded to film
i want it back ;(
how did I endup watching this . I loved metro land why did it need to close down
Cant understand why they got rid of this.. I'd of loved to have taken mu kids there
miss this place so much! very annoyed with person who decided to take it away :(
I cried for like, 5 days when i seen it was gone when i was like 9.
Lol. i went there for my bday its class... its a shame they took it down ;(
Hey, i'm looking to produce a video on the history of metroland and wondered whether I could use some of your footage with a credit?
Hello, please contact me via email - citytransport.info@gmail.com
Hi I don't know if this is way past it but I've got a whole day out with my My brother and dad as a kid, footage from 2004. It's over an hour long and documents all of metro land on the rides and around the center
@@daviddorrian5349 I still haven’t produced the video yet but that kind of footage would be great. Are you able to upload some onto CZcams perhaps and I could maybe screen grab some with a credit?
@@ThemeParkLoopy I am planning on uploading it to CZcams yes 😁 I will comment back with a link once it's up. Putting my credits on it would be nice too.
@@daviddorrian5349 that would be great 😊
@golidlockz
