See How Beef Is Destroying The Amazon

  • It’s true, the Amazon rainforest is being destroyed by our global appetite for beef. In Brazil, beef production is actually ramping up under new president, Jair Bolsonaro, and the clearing of land for more cattle pasture was one of the key drivers of the Amazon fires. In its debut episode, AJ+‘s new environmental show, “Goodbye Earth,” goes deep into the heart of a Brazilian industry that’s responsible for over two-thirds of Amazon deforestation.

      Yes it does change the way I look at beef. What is left for me to eat?
      Fruits and vegetables are genetically modified for some unknown reason, animals are fattened and treated cruelly just to get more out of the meat. Keep exposing the truth.

      No. I will continue to embrace carnivory and move away from grains, starches, and carbs and toward an all-meat diet. I've seen the health results for myself. Veganism is not for everyone--if you have food allergies, you're probably not allergic to meat.

      Yes. I am 55-years-old and although brought up in a family who ate beef, I never have been a beef eater. I on rare occasion do, yet I am now more aware the impact beef has due to my return to college and studies in sustainablity. Beef is a secondary food, as more crops are grown to feed industrialized cattle than to feed humans. As well, it requires a lot of water for just one hamburger (learned this in a geography course about water). With water scarcities, we need to move from foods that require large amounts of water as well. I never ate hamburgers before (most because of my propensity to be obese) but I am very conscious about beef. A big objection I also have about eating beef is the inhumane ways that cattle are treated in industrialize cattle ranching. No living being should be treating inhumanly.

    It's horrible to see the lack of accountability and acknowledgement of climate change taken by the ranchers and those who work for the slaughterhouses. In 2017, JBS (largest meat producer) were found to have bought 59,000 cattle from illegally deforested land AND had spent over $185M bribing politicians. The $3.2 B fine was a big hit to their MV. While many changes need to happen like change in consumer habits/increased regulation, I also hope investors start to see the risks associated with these unregulated industries and can hold companies accountable / divest.

He claims that Brazil should do to its lands what it wants to since developed countries put their forests down in the past so they could thrive. Including the pretext of national sovereignty in his speech and putting environmentalists as enemies of Brazil’s prosperity, he still has a big support in the country....

Corruption is ingrained in almost everything in Brazil and things that may chock people from other countries are just “the news of the day” for us. Lula has his share too, these obscure evidences without proof of guilt... but he is locked away for almost 2 years already, something remarkable for any politician in Brazil. I wish consumer choices could fix this. Market forces will send production to the cheapest location. Government regulations and regular investigations are the only ways to change the market. Increasing the consumer cost is one way to create better production processes. Planting trees as part of the cost of production can only be ensured by regulations and enforcement efforts.
    Soil science has apparently been forgotten by humanity, why can't they utilize manure and compost?

  • @pokpokgeiX
    @pokpokgeiX Před 4 lety

    ez, so its down to cow belching thats the major problem with meat consumption. so if ure a consumer of red meat and u have it 7 days a week, now consider mixing it up with white meat consumption 50% of the time instead, 4 days red meat, 3 days white meat - chicken. u have flavour fatigue anyway if u just keep having the same red meat all the time, so your red meat will only taste better if ure smart and mix it up such that some days or alternate meals u have chicken instead.
    or if the argument is such that folks that prefer red meat and only stick to red meat arrive at their choice because they like nothing else other than beef. then, its work in the direction of laboratory cultured meat that needs to be advanced, anyway u cant have future generations living outside planet earth to be full boring vegetarian dieters, it just wont hold up with time and folks will probably go mad unless its habitualized over a few generations and even then as long as meat still exist, humans of the future that are prevented from consuming it will rediscover it and from this alone spawn its own web of problematic complications.
    which means meat eaters are going to keep existing and keep having excuses to go back to their preferences. so the way to solve this is to engineer laboratory cultured meat that taste better than organic beef from cows and also to eventually create it completely side effect and harm free for human consumption. taste better not in a acquired taste kind of way but actually tasting better and its not like its impossible to achieve, just need the foresight and to set forth about accomplishing it only.
    this is how u can have both trees and burgers, though its not really a trees or burgers issue here but particularly cows belching and beef consumption thats the issue. burgers are still fine if they are chicken burgers, chickens dont belch like moo cows.
