- From an original story by Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli's FROM UP ON POPPY HILL is a high school love story that takes place in 1963, the year before the Tokyo Summer Olympics.
Umi is a high school girl, living with her family in the beautiful seaside town of Yokahama Bay. Each day she raises a pair of flags in anticipation of the return of her sailor father, who went missing some years previously.
One day Umi meets Shun, a member of the school's literature club, and the two students decide to restore the school's rundown clubhouse to its former glory. However, a local businessman plans to demolish the clubhouse for redevelopment, so Umi and Shun band together with their schoolmates in order to stop their beloved clubhouse from destruction. In the process Uma begins to falls in love with Shun, but there's a secret she will uncover that threatens their future happiness together...

There's always something in Ghibli Films that just makes the world seem ethereal. I'm still thirteen but I'm not blind enough to oversee the beauty this film holds. Maybe that's the reason that no matter how many times I rewatch these movies, I still can't seem to get bored of it ever, even after 4 years of rewatching all of them, no.

i totally agree i’ve been watching hayao miyazaki’s films basically since i was born and i’m not 14. i too cannot get enough of his movies. while i’m watching them it’s almost like i’m in a tranquil place where nothing bad is possible. the movies are in some way abstruse like there is more to them. the movies are incredible and there’s nothing else like them.

最初に見た時は正直よくわからなかったけど数年経って2回目か3回目くらいの再放送(？)でじっくり見て人間性と優しさに溢れててとても素敵な作品だなって思いました。

ふみたっぴ 咀嚼が醍醐味の名作映画
初めて観たときは小学6年生だったけれど、そのときに感じた温かさと優しさ、そしてときめきをいまでも鮮明に覚えています。周りにはこの作品を観たことのない人も多いけど、私にとっては1番大切で大好きな作品です。🤍
だいぶ昔に地上波で放送されてたのを見たきりだけど、これを見てすごく懐かしい気持ちが湧いた。胸をぎゅっと掴まれたような。記憶が正しければ旗を揚げるシーンと学校の雰囲気がとても好きだった

柊瑠美さんやら石田ゆり子さんやらこれまでのジブリヒロインを演じた方々が主人公を取り囲むのめちゃくちゃエモい
初めてみた時は小学生の頃で、分からないことがほとんどでついて行くのに必死だったけど、今大きくなってまた見てみると小さい時に気づけなかった細かなことやたくさんの人の優しさに感動し、さよならの夏を聴いて涙を流すようになりました。
私の中で一番宝物の映画です
Just watched this tonight on a whim (9/17/22). I've only watched the more popular fantastical Ghibli films in my youth but have recently decided to branch out in their roster. This was such a beautiful poignant slice of life!! It is now easily one of my favorites.

これさ、宮崎駿監督の描くジブリとは違って、宮崎吾朗監督が描く切なさが強くて年層を高めているからより難しさというかもどかしさがあって、成人近くに響く。
どんなジブリ作品も好きだけど、大人の今、コクリコ坂からが1番好きです。ゲド戦記では色々な言葉がありましたが、吾朗さん、素晴らしい作品をありがとう。
コクリコ坂からが好きな人、ぜひ、NHKでやってた「ふたり」という番組を見てみてください。より、コクリコ坂からが、ジブリが好きになります。
初めて映画館で観たのが8歳でした。当初は理解できなくて？？な状態でしたが、18歳になり観たら大好きな作品になりました。昭和の青春は本当に素敵ですね！こんな初恋してみたいなー

カルチェラタンってフランスの学生街の名前だったような気がする
メルのおばあちゃん（花さん）の「素敵な人ができて、あなたが旗を上げなくて済むようになるといいのにね。」っていうセリフが切ないけれど、言い方がものすごく優しくて好き。
※ネタバレ注意
結果的にはラストシーンでも海ちゃんは旗を上げ続けているけれど、それはお父さんと風間さんのためというふうに旗を上げる理由がすこし変化しているのかなって思ってる。
この感じの 雰囲気・香り・色使い・背景 昭和40年代までは まだ残っていました
私は子供の頃 同じ横濱の片隅で育っていたので すごく懐かしいです
あの山手地区は 米軍施設が多く 今でもまだその名残がありますが
当時は 塀の向こうのアメリカ！と言われていました
耳をすませば！と 双璧のいい作品です
この作品はなかなか良かったと思う。ふと思い出す事が多くて、なんか、時代の雰囲気みたいなのが凄い伝わってくる。惜しいのが東日本大震災で映画どころじゃなかった事だな。。
みんなに見て欲しかった。
学生運動(取り壊し反対)のシーンが好き。みんなで一つになって同じことを願うのは簡単だけど行動に移すのは難しい。でもそれをやってのける「青春」が羨ましくて微笑ましくて若いうちに沢山見ておきたくなる
なんていうか、昭和の言葉遣いや生活の上品さ、活気に惹かれる。今はなき学生運動、良い意味での男女のジェンダー差。青春だなって思う。ジブリに限らず昔のドラマやテレビ番組、本、なにもかもが生命力に溢れているように見えるんだよな。京都大学は現代でも自由の校風としてこの頃の良さをかろうじて残しているような気はするけど。ジブリの中でもかなり好きな作品です。人生が芸術を模倣するから、私の思い描く理想こそが芸術に宿っているんだろうな。現実じゃあこんなことできない。

小学生の時に見たときと、この歳になってから見たのでは全然違った。すっごくいいお話だった。
This is the only Ghibli film that made my cry at the end (yes I know you exist, Grave of the Fireflies, but even you didn't manage that!). And it's because the film is about finding closure and saying goodbye to the past in order to move forward - very sad themes that the ending song embodies with such nuance and emotion. The beauty of this film is that it ends with Meru and Shun finding the closure they needed with their fathers through their father's friend, and that allows them to move on with their life - Meru, moving on from the grief of losing her father, Shun finally finding out who his father really was (and the captain / father's friend, getting the chance to reunite with his two old friends through their children). It's not the ending of a typical love story where the two leads get together, and that's what makes the movie so much more beautiful that just a romance.
The love story is just a catalyst for this need for closure, but it's a beautifully nuanced one that captures both youthful innocence and the sentiment of Japan in the 60s recovering from WW2. Set against the backdrop of Japan hosting the upcoming Olympics, the film uses these two young teens making peace with their fathers' death in war as the embodiment of the Japanese people moving on from the horrors of WW2, and also uses the restoration of the old clubhouse to symbolize Japan as a nation needing to honour and respect the past (esp. the past war crimes committed during WW2) in order to move forward into the future. There is so much nostalgia for the past and the need to have closure from the past in every aspect of this movie, and its executed so brilliantly. I think its so underrated, and it deserves just as much attention (or even more) that the other "blockbuster" Ghibli movies.
なんかこういう告白したり正式に付き合ったりしてるわけじゃないけどお互い好きで会えると嬉しいみたいなのめっちゃ良いよね。まさに青春。
I love Ghibli Movies and this is my most favourite, it isn't as popular like Ponyo, Spirited Away and My Neighbour Totoro, but this this Ghibli Movie will always be my number one. It isn't as popular as it was back then but to me it holds a special place in my heart. I hope that this movie will get more recognised like the other Ghibli Movies, as all Ghibli Movies deserve to be loved.

曲と場面、声がマッチし過ぎている。。。こんな青春羨ましいすぎる。
What a wonderfully magical film, taking me back to my days of innocence and wanting to have something of my own to work towards, someone to love (no one wants to be alone) and something to be passionate about. All our lives echo some of what we see here. I can see parallels with my own journey, how frauight it is to find someone you can love and settle down, how tricky that can all be - am happily settled now, with a beautiful 6 six year old girl. But took a while to get here, with uncertainties along the way. Leaves me wanting to watch over and over again, a reminder of my and all our lives. This film and Whispers of the Heart have really captured my imagination recently.

This movie will never get old for me :')
私はこの映画が大好きです。すべてがとてもシンプルで質素だった昔の日本がとても好きです。当時の日本人は、学校で勉強することを本当に楽しんでいて、新しい友達を作り、お互いを尊敬し合っています。だから私は日本が大好きなのです！それは映画で非常にはっきりと示されています。
ストーリー的には可もなく不可もなく。
ジブリ作品にしてはメッセージ性が強くない。
2世作品だからと揶揄されている面もあるみたいだが悪くはないと思う。
高畑勲展に行ってから、人物など動きのあるところだけじゃなく、背景をよく見るようにしたら、とても美しい。
昔の建物や町並み、自然が緻密に再現されている感じ。
特に緑。
現在の京都の花屋さんに出回っているものは、外来種との組み合わせだったり、工芸作品か造花かと思われるような、つくりものっぽい植物が増えた。
東山魁夷さんが、川端康成さんに促されて、やがて失われてしまうだろう京都の自然を描きとどめた時点よりも前か同時期の自然の状態。
日本庭園でみられるような日本特有の緑の特徴がよく出ているように思われた。
I would like a bitter sweet sibling story better than typical love story that tries to justify the romance. Anyway, the movie still portrays the importance of restoring tradition and giving importance to memories of the past.
HELP I REALLY LOVE THIS MOVIE AND HAVE BEEN REWATCHING IT MANY TIMES !!! The only part I disappointed is the ending was a little rush, they didn't tell us if umi and shun end up together after been through all this drama. Oh well, I hope they will be together ❤

I agree, the ending felt unfinished. I thought this myself. May be let the characters get closer together, may be into each others arms, when they were on the boat at the end. Watch Whispers of the Heart, if you liked this film (where the ending works to give us that clearer ending). But such are these kinds of films, they always leave us wanting to see and know more (they probably got married and had 3 kids and working very ard etc. LOL). Anyway, if you loved From up on Poppy Hill, then you also love Whispers of the Heart (is equally good).
