hey guys! just want to address something:) -
im fully aware that this song is very popular amongst the therian community. i'm really honored so many people can find joy in my music! that being said, i get uncomfortable when people start claiming that my songs are *ONLY* for them/their group. i’ve noticed it happening most with this song. i welcome anyone to enjoy my music, so i just ask for people to please stop saying the song was written for or belongs to one single community.
i wrote this song about my cat running away. I’m not a therian, nor was this song written for/about therians.
all this being said, music is meant to be interpreted in thousands of ways (which is why i don't usually go into much depth about what my songs mean to me specifically) and i love and appreciate everyone who popularized The Milk Carton and i encourage you to keep enjoying, i'm in no way saying this to scare anyone off. just please remember that music shouldn't be claimed.

I love this song. My parents rarely let me outside, so when i was about 7-8, i ran away from home and took off to the forest near our house. It felt so magical, like i was seeing reality for the first time. I ran back about an hour later, since i was scared and hungry. But, i still run off often at night when my parents are asleep. The outside world is confusing and scary, but also magical and enchanting.

This song reminds me of my cat named Leo. He ran away when I was about 9 or 10 and I hadn't known where he'd gone. But a few weeks later I went into the forest near my house AND HE WAS JUST CHILLING THERE- From then on every time I went back to the forest he'd appear and follow me around, but he never came back home with me sadly- We eventually moved and he was left behind since we couldn't find him, but I hope he's happy. I'm pretty sure he was getting food from someone down the road who had LOTS of cats, so I think he'll be okay

Comfort song frfr, reminds me of fantasy worlds..? Elves? Castles? YKYK??? it's such a wonder, I love how mysterious it seems. The mysteries waiting to be uncovered, I love this feeling. I can't really explain it in words enough, but it makes me feel like there are other dimensions out there other than ours. I mostly feel like this because I really, and desperately want to escape reality SO MUCH.

Something about how it sounds child-like and it is telling a little story about a domesticated cat realizing how wild the world is, yet it's just relatable as a teen growing up, it had me feeling like I'm 9yo again reading fables in a huge, old book

I wanted to share how much your music means to my girlfriend. She's autistic and ADHD, living with chronic pain and more medical history than anyone at 38-years-old should ever experience...but one of her biggest comforts comes from music that lifts her up while separating her from the burdens of her daily life and the material world that so frequently causes her pain. That being the case, she often stumbles across songs that are more than songs to her--where the act of listening/singing along/dancing around becomes a stim--and that's what happened with "The Milk Carton."
Since she started listening to that song, she has added many of your songs to what I would consider her safe space...that place that exists solely between her headphones, shutting out everything beyond.
That's all, I just wanted you to know how much of an impact you've had on her...and how thankful I am for that I happen to be.
So, thank you.

When I read the meaning of this song, I couldn't make it halfway through without sobbing. 5 years ago, I lost my cat. He was my favorite one.. his name was Olive, handsome black cat with gorgeous yellow eyes. He ran out the front door one day, while we were getting bees removed from the vent in my house. I was 7 at this time. When we realized he was really gone, I refused to go to school for a whole week (I'm pretty sure I still went tho). When we couldn't find him for months, my family gave up, believing he was killed by a coyote. I never lost hope though that he would one day be sitting on the front porch, waiting to be taken back into my care.. it's been 5 years, and I still cling onto that hope that he'll be there one day.. and if he's not, at least we'll reunite in heaven..
(This took a good 20 minutes to write because my eyes turned into waterfalls 😭😭😭)
Oh, I'm very sorry to you, because your cat died.. I know what it's like to lose your favorite pet, and even more so, as a child, when you get attached to it, you find out that it no longer exists, and never will.. It's hard to get over, but I'm sure you can. We hold a candle for Olive. let him sleep on a soft cloud, eternal memory to him.

This made me bust in to tears. The outside world has never made sense to me. No matter how hard I try its never enough. I'm always sent back into my own little space feeling lesser than I know I can be. Living in this world we are forced to live in is hard when everything is so complicated.
It doesn't have to be complicated. Can you do me a favor? Go somewhere you enjoy, but not public, whether that's a forest or your yard, then do something you enjoy, like quads or skateboarding, I want you to enjoy yourself and feel free. (Listen to music too! It makes it even better!)

The line "have they really domesticated me?" Really speaks to me for this reason. I was a wild child. I would run off into the woods and drink from streams and try to get away from everyone as much as i could and just be me. I didnt care who thought i was weird. I wanted to be me and if i found friends who liked me along the way then great, come on along! My parents sent me away for it. To a place now known for its abuse. I havent yelled or danced or slept soundly through the night since. The outside world terrifies me and i didnt realize how bad it was until im living in an apartment with my husband now and ive had a moment to breathe alone without anyone around and im so scared. This is my home now and i know its mine and i can do what i want here and be what i want. I can finally be me. 6 years and i can be me and i dont know who i am anymore. Im scared of the dark and of being alone for two seconds. Every time i step out the front door i have to remind myself to breathe deeply and calm my heart. Theyve domesticated me. Once i was a coyote and now im a fat cat scared of my own shadow.
Im not a therian, but this song feels magical and beautiful and makes me feel as if im running in the woods with my best friends, and going on a fairy tale type of adventure, meeting new fairy friends along the way. Thank you.

This definitely gives me disillusionment with adulthood after growing up with it being seen as exciting on TV and traumacore vibes. Like I feel that in the lyrics that are juxtaposed by a cheery tune of the music. I noticed that with a lot of your (Madilyn's) songs and you honestly have kinda put some of the things that I have dealt with in life into music, it makes me feel less alone (ex. The Chapel and this song).
I get those vibes, too. Like a “you don’t know a good thing until it’s gone” situation where, as a kid, you idolized and romanticized being an adult. All you want to do is have that freedom (let me out, let me in, let me out) But, then, when you really do grow up you realize how much more dull and terrifying the world really is and how unprepared you are to face it.

Ever since I first heard you working on this song it's been in my head and sososososoosooo special to my heart! This song really resonates with me, it reminds me so much about my sheltered lifestyle I've had for so long with recent years, with realizations and desires for escaping gaining my freedom, while also struggling with my "domestication" if that makes sense. "Have they really domesticated me?" really sits with me and I cannot stress enough how much this song will help me. I know it will.

For years, I've not felt like the house I live in is my actual home, as in, safe space where you live. I even tried to run away at one point a few years ago. This song encapsulates how I've been feeling for so long. But it gives me hope that some day, I can feel at home somewhere, with my partner, all my loved ones in touch, no one ever being too far away. I'm at the age where in just a few years, I'll be leaving the nest, so-to-speak. I'm glad I found this song :)

this song makes me feel like a child who loves the outdoors but has only seen their back yard and once they go outside the fence they're scared and are seeing kids from their school or from the milk carton all while being chased by wild animals, soon they find themselves dyeing and realizes the outdoors are really scary.

This song really resonates with me because my parents never really let me leave the house often and I had few friends so I was constantly stuck inside throughout my childhood and recently I've been craving to go outside and run around in a forest but I can't caus there's like two to three feet of snow and its been like -15 almost daily and in a way I've kinda been domesticated and I have a small fear that when I finally go into a forest all I'd want to do is go home even though this is what I wished for.

What I think this song is about (Or at least how I interpreted it) is a house cat that left it’s house and got lost. And it’s all from the cat’s perspective of how it got lost. It gives me a nostalgic, yet slightly sad feeling. It makes me smile when I hear this. The song from the cat’s perspective makes it sound exciting, yet scary, from the cats POV. Pure ✨GENIUS✨ and it gives off the vibes of when it’s raining, yet still sunny! Just pure happiness, and whimsy!❤
