  • Chopsticks the quaker parrot has been challenging to work with lately. So when Jamie and Dave from Bird Tricks come for a visit, Jessi asks for their expertise on bird training to help figure out what is going with Chopsticks and his training.
    We also have a collab video on their channel as well!

      This is wisdom and mastery. Mastery doesn't grant egotistical dominion. Mastery coincides with wisdom, and wisdom shows that we never know everything and its okay to hear the experiences and lessons from others.

    Lovely video! I adore Chopsticks' talking and sassy personality from previous videos, it's so good of you to have videos like this too showing the struggles of bird care and your own struggles with training. It's great to see examples of experts needing a second pair of eyes and guidance to get through a tough spot, important for everyone to remember they benefit from help!
    And as always, your openness in showing everything involved with bird care reminds me that no matter how much I enjoy watching your videos on them, I never want to own a bird myself.

    Yay! Jamie talked about the ABC of behaviour. I used this as a teacher to help me analyse classroom incidents. A is for Antecedents, what happened before the event, long and short term. B is for behaviour, exactly what happened during the incident. C is for consequences, what happened as a result of the behaviour, particularly what may have been rewarding and reinforcing, encouraging the behaviour to be repeated. An excellent tool for close observation and reflection.

    My bird has different feather fluffs for different emotions. There's happy fluff, scared fluff, angry fluff, and chill fluff. I'm apparently the only one who can tell the difference. But I think they all look completely different.

    • @TamaraKane
      @TamaraKane Před 3 lety

      @@lydwinaofschiedam2685 body language can be surprisingly varied with birds. They really do puff up for many reasons. Sometimes they fluff up as a signal that they want head rubs/scratches. Sometimes they puff up to look large if they're scared. They can also puff up if they're cold because that helps them trap heat with their feathers. They'll even puff up at times when they're sick because in the wild they don't want to show vulnerability by letting other animals see that they're ill. If there's nothing wrong with a bird's environment, you can start to get to know what the fluff is about. If you're chilling at home and your bird is totally comfortable and fluffed, odds are that's a happy fluff. 😊

      Kind of like human hugs are not the same as headlocks, or the heimlich maneuver, or carrying your groceries, but all of the body language of wrapping our arms around things might seem similar if we were to photoshop out the activity.

    "Bird Tricks" are by far the most LEGIT training channel, better then any other channel in all of youtube by far and I don't think any animal channels comes close. They can teach you about every thing you need to know times 1.000.000 you didn't know but should of known. Also they don't teach just what to do but Why. I love their channel so much and Animal Wonders too!

    • @DonnaBrooks
      @DonnaBrooks Před 4 lety +5

      Hi! You should've known to use "should've known" instead of, "should of known" b/c "of" has a meaning & it makes no sense to say "should of known". "Should've is a contraction for "should HAVE" so just use the word "should have" in your sentence & if that's what you want to say & it makes sense, then you can use the contraction. The same goes for would've & could've.

All the best horse trainers know this trick, and it doesn’t surprise me it works for birds as well. Immediately taking the scary thing away can both be scary in itself, and you end up accidentally rewarding the bad behavior.

    One of my favorite book series *ever* has a very special group of folks - basically a magical tribe - who work constantly with birds. Now, it's a fantasy book series, so these people have extremely unusual birds and all sorts of "yeah that would never happen in nature" types of abilities for both themselves AND their birds...as a for-instance, most of the bond-birds are raptors, but not all the same species, and they tolerate each other: not something you'd really see in the real world, at all!!
    But that said, the author of the books has worked with lots of raptor rehab programs and has quite a flock of parrots herself, and so I read about "feather language" and a few other quirks of bird behavior.
    It was really, really neat to see Chopsticks displaying some feather language in this video. I too would have read the raised head feathers as a happier, more relaxed "expression" from a parrot. It's fascinating to realize how differently Chopsticks was acting from the expected, and watching you learn new ways to approach working with him.
    Wonderful video! Thank you!

      @@WireMosasaur Oh! The series is by Mercedes Lackey; her Valdemar universe...
      There are several trilogies but the set that makes me think about all this is generally the "Darian's Tale" three: Owlflight, Owlsight, and Owlknight.
      The people that call themselves the Tayledras are known by outsiders as the Hawkbrothers. You can already see from that, the sort of neat stuff they are known for!

I think many of her birds came to her traumatized because people did not understand how to properly care for them. Okay I seriously love this! Jessi is a professional animal trainer, but can still listen to Jamie and Dave's tips! A perfect demonstration of how we can always keep learning!

    Maybe this is weird, but our gcc is very unsure about things he hasn't seen before so when we introduce him to something new, we tap the item on our own faces before we offer it for him to tap his beak on, then we tell him what a good boy he is. He's very motivated by praise which is super sweet

    Great video! It's good to talk to other trainers and figure something out. Now Chopsticks will succeed, hopefully, lol.
