      I highly recommend the older games... at least Saints Row 2 forward. This is my personal opinion but getting a recap on Saints row 1 is for the best, it aged like milk and feels like an attempt at copying gta, then sr2 comes out and it has a personality that hits hard and has great moments. 3 comes in and tries to upscale everything. Some people dislike it, but personally it was a fun experience and I still meshed with the characters. Then sr4. It starts alright but the premise bit off more then it could chew, with great moments but equally bad ones. I say it really was a bad place for the company and with Gat out of hell they tried to be funny at times, but the weird game decisions of so many minigames weighed it down along with it being rarer to get that personality they were know for yo leak out... the singing scene though, yeah that was 100% worth my gameplay up to that point.. overall, I'll miss Saints Row as it was, maybe one day it can do it all again. I hope you continue to enjoy the games though, ND I hope you have a good day

    I will say, when I played Gat Out Of Hell, the thing I enjoyed the most was using the wings. Everything else was meh. I personally feel like the controls for the wings was great. I got around the map with no difficulty at all and found myself flying between and over buildings, just collecting the collectables as I saw them. So I disagree with your point about the wings being bad in this video.

    • @craigrobertson1629
      @craigrobertson1629 Před 2 lety +120

      Also, did you forget about the boosting? There's a Wing icon next to your radar which indicates how many boosts you have. Boosts help you reach higher altitudes and increase your speed to help you get to objectives and places higher than you. The more wings next to your radar, the more boosts available for you to use.

      I thought of this idea not too long ago. It may not be the best idea, to be honest, but here's how I'll try to fix Saints Row:
      We split them up into alternative universes.
      Universe 1: The Prime and Cannon universe. This universe is made of the first two Saints Row games and is for fans who much rather prefer the seriousness over the craziness.
      Universe 2: This universe is very similar to the first, but it continues on to 3 and 4. After defeating Zinyak, the Saints, after having some fun with the time traveling technology, must figure out how to use it to restore the Earth and prevent the invasion from ever happening. This universe is for fans who actually like the craziness of the later games.
      Universe 3: This universe basically leads to Agents of Mayhem.
      To be a little clearer, How the Saints Save Christmas is canon to both Universe 2 and 3, but Saints Row GOOH is only canon to Universe 3. What do you think? Good, bad? Needs some work?

    This might be a controversial opinion, but I really enjoyed the last two SR games. I really liked the niche in which these games live. They're an ironic take and feel so overkill (in a good sense) and the gameplay felt very refreshing from everything else to this day. I recently replayed SR4 and there's a certain sensation with it that just sticks with me. I love the setting of both SR4 and SRGooH and the game design is hardly reached by any other studio ever. It has that cartoony-naive and bold vibe which I really like and the radio in SR4 really influenced my music taste. Listening to In Flame's "Deliver Us" while gliding through the city is a core memory for me.

    My biggest issue with the Saints series is that they took what we loved, a story that got dark and gritty but has some random hilarious bullshit scattered around the open world to keep it from looking like a 13 year old's MySpace page, and stripping it down to JUST the "random hilarious bullshit scattered around the open world". Only now that stuff has also invaded the story itself so we're left with nothing to actually ground us.
    I mean, come on. Look at what happened to Carlos in Saints Row 2. They haven't come close to what they did to our boy back then. It's shit like that I miss. We legitimately didn't know if someone was gonna make it through the story or not. But that didn't detract from the fact you could then call Eye For An Eye and get a Zombified Carlos as a homie.

      I do think SR2 was the best of the series in terms of story (though the gameplay was a half-baked GTA 3 clone at that point, later gameplay was FAR better and, I'd argue, actually ahead of GTA consistently), but they also saw that GTA was going to have a lock on that. If they wanted to break out of Grand Theft Auto's shadow and differentiate themselves they had to go a different route. And boy did they. SR3 for me was the perfect sweet spot of wacky and random but still having narrative stakes, good story beats, and interesting gameplay. SR4 just took it TOO far-- it felt like you were on an acid trip just drifting through different hallucinations "oh, I'm in a spaceship now... sweet. Oh, now I'm a superhero in a cage match... awesome!" the setpieces were good in their own right but the flow and narrative stakes were nonexistent.

  • @jewelsdragonfly
    @jewelsdragonfly Před 2 lety +76

    The thing to me that made the first 2 great was that there was weight in the games map and story.
    Like in Saints Row 2, there was so much to explore like different health stores, music shops, going inside a prison and a mall. Everywhere you go, there was something worth driving around such as Chinatown, university, trailer park, and of course the mall. Stilwater has to be one of the most interesting sandbox settings.
    SR3 and beyond is just "big city" there's nothing unique about it.
    Even the story felt like no one was safe because of the gangs being intimidating where the characters weren't safe. Characters died permanently, Gat being stabbed, and the main character getting development.
    SR3 and the rest make it feel weightless by telling the enjoyers, "Oh Gats dead and you let Shaundi die? Don't worry, you call Shaundi after she got killed off and she and Gat will return in SR4."

    Gat out of hell was a very fun, sometimes glitchy game on my Xbox 360. The musical numbers were memorable and the flying controls were cool and surprisingly good. I got to shot the devil with some bees.

    As the very first saints row game I ever played I have to respectfully disagree. You get to kill demons with the powers with the powers of an angel. Who wouldn't want that?
    And the wings work fine, either you suck at flying or you need to uninvert the flying controls..

    Although I felt disappointed playing Gat out of hell I still had fun with it, my biggest stipulation however is the lack of a good soundtrack/radio system within the game because SR from my experience from the first to fourth game has ALWAYS had bangers in it's music catalogue. especially 2. I distinctly remember when I first played this game of when you first get into hell and get into the car I tried to mess around with the radio to find that there's NONE except for the musical numbers in cutscenes which I did not care for in the slightest.

    I had SR IV + Gat Out of Hell on ps4 and I definitely remember feeling disappointed with Gat after playing IV. The gameplay loop got really boring and the world was so ugly to look at, I felt obligated to finish it cuz Gat was such a cool character but I recommend anybody else just *watch the cutscenes on CZcams*

    SR3 is definitely my favorite of the series. It has a right balance of goofiness to typical GTA clone stuff. Like, you get to drive cars but some of the cars can be suped up or zany. Characters were crazy and the story was just absurd. I loved it. Then 4 came out and made the driving pretty much obsolete. That was why I loved Saints Row, the driving around. Instead you can run as fast as a car and it just kinda turned me off.

    I played this game on PC and I still have it on my laptop the flying is really easy on mouse and keyboard. The story however is too short for my liking I really liked the art design of this game. I agree with the statement that this game gets repetitive fast but although that is a bad thing for most players it doesnt bother me that much. still completed it 100%.

    I dare to argue that the flying was one of the best in any open world game to date and it's just a fault of skill that you struggled with it.

    I feel like having the Saints go on to conquer a planet for the 5th game made sense. Like all their games, it has you starting from Square 1 and forced to claw your way to the top. Since we're dealing with an alien planet, it lets the writers flex their creative juices to come up with interesting scenarios and characters for the players, since we don't need to be tied down to being on Earth. If 5 was successful, they could've released a DLC that had you going to that planet's moon to conquer. Like all DLCs, it'll be smaller than the original game, but unique in its own way. Think of how unique Far Cry Blood Dragon, especially since the basic structure of the game was just Far Cry 3.

    If someone asked me what my favorite parts of Saints Row were, I would say yes. In the first place are 2 and 4, in the second place 3, in the third place 1, fourth is Gat Out Of Hell (because I didn't beat it) and finally the Reboot which, although I haven't played it, I've seen comparisons with other parts, but I'm going to play it.
