The key to surviving is to innovate. Apple only surviving so long now cause they are more of a fashion item than an innovative one. The only reason why people still IPhones because the competition sux at their design and concept. So Apple’s it just works beat them down. B

    I actually had one of these and man it was a great little TV. I believe I purchased mine from Montgomery Wards because it was on sale at a ridiculously low price. Which, I at that time I found that places like Circuit City, Montgomery Wards, etc would put electronics that didn't sell well on sale at blow out prices from time to time. You just had to be in these places in the right time -- and that's how I found my WatchCube. Aside from my 27 inch Sony Trinitron -- the WatchCube got the most use. This is because back in the day -- I worked in the IT field often had to work from home. The WatchCube was right by my computer workstation so I could easily watch TV as I worked. I also took it to work and used it in my office because it was so compact. But alas after years of hard use -- my WatchCube died -- screen would just display white. It was an incredible piece of tech which I will never forget...

Its great to see a new video on this little guy and has definitely inspired me to get back to work on my own (white model) that I picked up about 5 years ago from a local thrift shop. Is that the only board that I need to worry about for basic functionality? I've replaced quite a few caps in this thing already and I am still getting no power at all. And advice or resources you can point me to?

    • @AnalogThinker
      @AnalogThinker  Před 3 lety +1

      Hey sorry for the delayed reply. First make sure the power input or fuse isn't blown, Sony used those stupid reverse polarity power bricks but I've seen a lot of fried devices as it's so natural to use a regular 12V Barrel with centre positive. So yeah just probe the power input stage and make sure you have all the boards powered. Then depending on how bad your capacitor leaked, also check continuity on tracks that look eaten by acid, a good IPA cleanup is always a good step. Finally, the best source of information I found when I first got the set was this site : visions4netjournal.com/indextron/ The guy seems to be THE subject matter expert. I think I tried to contact him but never got a reply, not sure if he's still active. Nonetheless his blog posts are worth a reading, you'll find multiple articles about this WatchCube, and some of his repair steps.

    Index CRT''s have no need for drive controls, which compensate for the emission failings of older 3 separate RGB electron guns. The color tracking will always be perfect, with one electron gun. The color would fade to black and white with a very weak tube, because of the loss of beam focus.

    @Sashazur Před rokem

    Here’s a video that explains the tech: czcams.com/video/_b7omGhw7wc/video.html
    And here’s my TLDR version: instead of three separate electron guns, one for each color and a shadow mask to ensure each electron beam only hits phosphors of the correct color, a single gun index tube adds light sensors that detect when the beam is at the start of a phosphor triplet (i.e. a physical pixel). This enables it to correctly vary the intensity of the beam as it sweeps across the three phosphors in the triplet, to ensure the correct color is reproduced. That’s also why you get a black and white image if the sensor isn’t working - the beam intensity can’t be adjusted for color since the sensor can’t see anything, so it falls back to working like a monochrome CRT.

    I'd like to see you wave a magnet in front of it, as I understand it would behave differently from any other color CRT. The image should temporarily distort like it would on a B&W tube but the colors should remain accurate within that distortion - and there should be no lasting color displacement once the magnet is removed, so no need to degauss. I'd just like to see it happen with my own eyes :)
