    Kudos to owner of this video who graciously uploaded a full, easy to follow video tutorial on making this 3D face mask. She has also generously provided a link to the PDF pattern so you guys don't have to reconstruct the pattern from her measurement. ON TOP OF that, she has also provided a link to another youtube video which has all other sizes. THE LEAST we can do, is READ the description/caption and not come up with unnecessary question like 'can you send me the PDF'

    I've made masks from many different CZcams videos, and this is the best. The engineering to create that nosepiece that also hugs your face on the side is truly brilliant. There is talk in the media about wearing two masks in order to get your face snugly covered, but if you sew and design, you can meet this goal with one well-designed mask. And this mask pattern is the place to begin, believe me. The fabric used in the video seems tissue-thin, and I wanted to address that. I found that using a slightly heavier cotton fabric eliminated the neat way the sides of the nosepiece lay against your face -- they now sort of stood up like a sail. So I worked up a lining -- a third piece of fabric, closely-woven cotton. It's cut to fit the bottom half of the mask only, and is sandwiched in with the two pieces that form the mask. This gave me the thicker fabric on the bottom half over my nostrils and mouth. Big help in making this mask: Clover Wonder Clips and a walking foot attached to your sewing machine.

      Janet Shirley, I am a rookie when it comes to sewing and this video really confused me. I thought I was understanding everything until it got to the 5:00 mark. In the beginning of the video I noted that the fold of the fabric was along the top and didn't seem to be used--at the 3:40 mark, it looked like the far left side of the pattern was against a cut side, not a fold. But when she got to the 5:00 mark, it looked like she unfolded each piece--it looked so much wider, maybe twice as wide. I see that she sews the 2 pieces separately at that point, but I can't see how the pieces are so long/wide at that point. Did she change the placement of the pattern so that it WAS on a fold? I'm hoping that since you've already made the masks that you'll be able to tell me what I'm missing. I would be so very grateful if you could!

    • @meaghan1902
      @meaghan1902 Pƙed 4 lety +2

      Barb F The fold of the fabric ends up in the centre of the mask. I see what you mean that the fold looks like it’s at the top at 3:40, I think that might be because she’s got two layers of folded fabric (so she’s cutting through four layers but it ends up as two full length pieces) I hope this makes sense 😊

    • @UsernameBarbF
      @UsernameBarbF Pƙed 4 lety +1

      @@meaghan1902 It makes perfect sense! Thank you so much! About an hour after I initially watched this, I stumbled on another video "Journal Research Review of Fabric..." showing the test results of safest fabrics based on scientific studies conducted at various universities, etc. Here's the link to it if you'd like to check it out. czcams.com/video/SS5LAUdLRwA/video.html It's too bad all this information wasn't available sooner, it's sure enlightened me about what fabric to buy! Again, thank you so much for helping me out.

      I can't get elastic here, so my husband offered up an old t-shirt. I've made strips of jersey (most stretch in the long direction) and am using that. I just cut the strip, pull it so that it curls, and use about 22.5 cm per loop (no stitching;finishing, I just leave the jersey as is.) It is soft and comfortable, might be worth a try for you :)

      Or make a much longer loop that goes over your head and round your neck, then up on top of your head. It also means that if you need to take your mask off to eat or talk to someone with hearing problems, you can take the top loop off and back on without touching the mask.

      orangudress me too! All complained of elastic and I got low. Need it for other projects. My daughter had given me a bag of all her teen type T-shirt’s. She’s 30 now! They are 60/40 cotton/polyester. I find the stretch on that good for ear ties. Ive been making pleated masks with side casings planning on the elastic to not hold up anyway. I send long ties with all my masks. My sister just ties it through the ear ties at work but doesnt use it all the time.

      See my comment to Jacquie. I saw someone make adjustable ear ties using 2 beads. I may think about that but I just lop knot it and let anyone retire them or as noted, send a long string too.

    • @naomimartell8937
      @naomimartell8937 Pƙed 4 lety +1

      For over the head: I use strips of 95%Cotton/5% spandex knit fabric that i have but an old tee shirt works well too. However, I use longer strips (approx 36 inches or 91cm). I cut the 1" wide strips and stretch them out so they curl in and it ends up looking like elastic cording. I then feed the cord through the mask starting at the bottom, up over the top of the mask, down through the other side of the mask. I then feed a pony bead using wire that I fashioned into a narrow U (I have jewelry wire - but a long twist tie would probably work too) and I feed both ends of the strips through the pony bead, one at a time. I tie the end of the strips together using a knot so the pony bead doesn't come off. You end up with two large loops that fit over your head.
      To Put it on: slip bottom loop (part that has pony bead) on over your head first, then slip top loop over head and then you can adjust the pony bead so the mask fits snuggly. Put top loop over your ears. It sits on your ears but doesn't pull on them.
