  • Jimmy Spinks was a legendary figure in London's underworld. Uncle of great fighting man Leny McLean, Jimmy was the man who Lenny looked up to and was the hardest man to come out of Hoxton. In this documentary, we look at some of his epic battles and the darker myths we have found surrounding the man... #mattlegg #yammybtv #jimmyspinks #hoxton #thekrays #royshaw

One of my uncles and Jimmy Spinks were mates and Jimmy would sometimes be at family parties. As a boy, I remember him as a quiet man, sipping a beer and having a dance. One of my older cousins said "Uncle Jim used to let me count the scars on his face".

Just watched again , quality. I met a guy in Stoke Newington who was Billy Hills tic tac man, his name was Jack Josephs . He told me a story about an old wealthy spinster trying to place a bet on the Kings horse in a race and 2 or 3 bookmakers declined her bet. Apparently she approached Bill and told him to offer half a point bigger than any of the others and she would back him and Bill never looked back. This Jack lied about his age to go and fight in the somme WW1. He was also a boxer he told me he would sometimes have 3 fights a night for the coffers people would throw into the ring, he also fought the World champ at his weight but not for the title. The Boxing Board used to send cars for him to attend do's right into his nineties. A real character RIP.

Lenny McLean's uncle, he surpassed Lenny in legendary violence! His face resembled a road map, all crisscrossed razor stripes, testament to the fact that no one would face him without stool and/or a mob. The story about the cat was in fact an act by another hardman called Wassle Newman, he was as legendary but less well known. He would be harder to research but interesting mate!

I remember being told of some tales of old Jimmy including one where he put an eye out of an old bill in Soho, Lenny's next door neighbours were my in laws the infamous Hanmore family 13 kids in a tiny 2 up 2 down and eldest Wally was part of the firm, his next brother down fed up with bashing folks in pubs became a celebrated SAS soldier, dunno much about the girls in the family but they all fought like cats in a sack between each other. Wally and I used to go down Brick Lane on a sunday to have some tea with Pop and Tony Burns, I knew Tony from a favour I did him some time prior and we'd talk trash with the faces who would appear for a brew at Pop's stall. Wally back in the day was known for owning a Ford Galaxie big black thing it was.

(Not much against that gorilla (who speaks) but there's something inside of a man that is only.alive when he thinks he's beat? yeah that was some man in every sense of the word he came from the gut of what a gladiator through up after winning his freedom, pure, unadulterated mix of every violent senses the head and bowel have gotta release! what man should be?

Spinks a Scottish name and I know of a family down Arbroath .
They own boats,Fish processors and shop owners.
A good name they have but during the Cod Wars the story goes they cleaved the front of Ships and my ma is from Arbroath area and my granda had a farm and I remember working with Siddy Spinks ,the man was 5:4 tops and raw power ,I saw him hold the front of my granda,s Princess car at the front up and hold it long enough for a wheel off and on and the first nut run on a thread.
