- Nicole makes the best ever Cuban sandwich, pressed and toasted, buttery, Cuban bread layered with shredded pork, ham, Swiss cheese, dill pickle, and dressed with mustard and mayonnaise.
Ingredients
Roast Pork
1/2 white onion, cut into chunks
15 cloves garlic
3 oranges, juiced
3 limes, juiced
1 tablespoon ground cumin
2 teaspoons dried oregano
2 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 (5 pound) pork shoulder roast
Sandwiches
1/4 cup butter, softened, divided
1 loaf Cuban bread, cut into 4 pieces and halved lengthwise
2 1/2 tablespoons yellow mustard
1 1/2 tablespoons mayonnaise
8 slices Swiss cheese
2 cups shredded roast pork
12 ounces thinly sliced deli ham
12 sandwich-sliced refrigerated kosher dill pickles, such as Claussen Kosher Dill Sandwich Slices
Directions
Prepare pork shoulder: Add onion, garlic, orange juice, lime juice, cumin, oregano, black pepper, and salt into a food processor or blender and process until smooth.
Place pork in the bottom of a heavy-bottomed Dutch oven or large baking dish and cut 3 or 4 large deep slits in the meat. Pour marinade over pork, cover, and marinate in the refrigerator 4 hours or overnight.
Place Dutch oven with prepared pork, covered, in the oven and set the temperature to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Bake until pork is very tender, 3 to 4 hours. Remove from the oven; rest 15 minutes. Remove pork to a cutting board. Skim any fat from the cooking liquid, and set cooking liquid aside.
Shred pork with two forks, and discard any remaining fat and bone. Return pork to the pot, and add cooking liquid back into meat as needed to moisten.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
Spread about 2 tablespoons softened butter over cut sides of bread and place bread, buttered sides down, in skillet. Cook until buttered side is lightly browned and toasted, about 3 minutes.
Stir mustard and mayonnaise together in a small bowl. Spread about 2 teaspoons mustard mixture over bottom halves of bread and top with 1 slice of cheese, tearing as needed to fit the bread without hanging over the edges. Using tongs or a slotted spoon, add about 1/2 cup shredded pork to each sandwich, draining off any excess liquid. Top each evenly with ham, 3 pickle slices, and 1 cheese slice. Spread remaining mustard mixture evenly over top pieces of bread and place on top.
Reheat the skillet over medium heat. Spread about 1 tablespoon butter lightly on the outsides of the 4 bottom buns. Working 2 sandwiches at a time, place sandwiches, buttered side down, in skillet. Place 1 or 2 heavy-bottomed skillets on top of sandwiches to weigh them down. Cook until toasted and lightly golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Remove weighted skillets.
Spread remaining 1 tablespoon butter over the 4 top halves of sandwiches, flip and press with weighted skillets again until toasted. Remove the first 2 sandwiches from skillet; repeat the toasting process with remaining sandwiches. Cut sandwiches in halves and serve immediately.

I love love how down to earth you are and how you enjoy being you Nicole 💞
I think I’m putting on weight watching you cook these wonderful dishes and cocktails! 😂
i love you so much. you're the best. i make your recipes all the time and my husband is so happy eating all the foods i'm making. Allrecipes and we are so lucky to have you. god bless.
Lived in the lower Keys for lonnnnng time. You could get some amazing Cubans that would blow your mind all up and down US one at Little mom and Pop shops places tucked away, places did even locals didn’t know existed, the woman that sold them out of her home kitchen until she sold out every day, quickly… have a press, have made them here in Maine, yes, yes… reverse snow bird. 🥺🥺 There’s no replacement for Cuban bread, but since we can’t get it, whatchagottamakedowith is perfect! Any time of year is perfect for me but get yer drift. Wicked wonderful way to make me hungry and homesick 🌴🌴🌞
LA Segunda bakery, out of Tampa has the best, most authentic Cuban bread on the planet. Good news for you, they will ship it to you.
I completely agree about the mayonnaise and mustard mixed. Love y’all’s recipes. Thanks 😊
My son brought me a Cuban Sandwich yesterday from a restaurant called Babalu’s. It was fantastic.
I never thought to make a cuban sandwich before, yet this seems approachable. 😋
I promise it is! And so worth it!
Naranja agria (sour orange) is also available in a bottle.
Everything looks delicious. Mojito is traditionally made with Yerba buena and powder sugar.
Okay. Pretty good. After 40+ years in Miami and Tampa, I could narrow it down to maybe 3 of my favorite Cuban cafe. There was a Cuban bakery in Tampa where, if you drive by at 5 am, your car would automatically pull in. No conscious effort. 😂. The smell was intoxicating. Oh, none of my favorite Cuban restaurants are in Key West. Though, if you want some Key Lime recommendations, I have those. 😉
The Cuban shop in Tampa you are referring to is La Segunda in Ybor City. They just celebratedv100 years. They make the best Cuban bread and Cuban sandwiches. The only thing Nichol’s was missing is Salami.
I always thought you was cooking out your home
I made this one time and my husband was a happy person! 😊
Oh, this looks so delicious 😋
Thanks for the short tour of the test kitchen. Any way you can do a much longer video?
Sure, I’d love to!
Remember that trick I do! I freaking love her
grew up eating them! delicious. moved to the mid west, hard to find a good one. I guess I will be cooking my own.
I promise it's as good as anything down south!
💖 Love your enthusiasm 😋 👍
I think we (all of us who watch your videos) have to make Cuban sandwiches and Mojotos first day of spring. 😊😊.
Looks so delicious 😋
Wow 👌
Yummy!!!!
Awesome, thanks
Yum yum yum 👍❤
That looks insanely good!
It is I promise!
I once had a Cuban with garlic aioli... best thing ever!!!!!!
Hummm goooddd
Oh my goodness! 😊 So going to make .
Please do!!
Wait?! Who are you? Where is chef John? I'm confused! BUT MAN you know how to cook too! That looks amazing! 🤣
Aloha. Grew up in Florida, Cuban girlfriend. Miss those sandwiches. Haven’t had a good one in over 30 years. Blt and Po Boys a close second.
With the mayo mustard I learned to do it to your personal taste and then spread it on each side of the bread. Then a layer of roasted pork, cheese, then ham topped with a few pickle slices.
Nice! I sometimes I add sriracha or chipotle to the mustard/Mayo mix. And extra cheese.
Awesome video!!! Mojitos and Cuban sandwiches this weekend!!!
Not a Mayo fan but making a good mustard creamier makes sense. It covers up the taste of Mayo.
Key West? Get the best Cuban in Ybor City(Tampa).
Absolutely
Brocatos on Columbus
Hi y’all 😊 yummy
This sounds fabulous. If you don't have the ingredients or time to make the mojo fresh, Goya makes a fabulous mojo marinade. Nicole's is probably a billion times better but the Goya is pretty dang good as a quicker recipe.
You make me hungry!
That’s my goal!
Nicole, you're starting to remind me of Sandra Lee from "Semi Homemade " .... "It's cocktail time!" 😂😂❤
haha! I actually brought her up the other day!
Heat that top pan and shave your time in half 😮
Yassssssss!
Hey ALL RECIPES 😊👋
what a place to work...your "office" is my kinda place...
it's the best!
Your videos & recipes rock. Thank you for all you do.
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Wow, I thought that kitchen was in your house. DUH, now that I see you going to the supermarket in the house, I see it is not your kitchen. In your house, I was jealous, wow, but I love your cooking /recipes
Fantastic actress
Sarussi on 8th st in Miami best Cuban ever!
Lived in the keys had to make my own Cuban as couldn't find a good Cuban sandwich anywhere there!
Looks Amazeballs… But I say NO to your Mayo !!!! I hate Mayo!!!!
👊🏼💯💙😉
Noooooo mayo....The carnitas looked amazing. Will do that recipe!
This sandwich and drink definitely look worth my time to make. I was going to put in an emoji to end on but I couldn't find a picture of Willy the Weasel.
totally worth it!!
I made my wife come and watch this one. (I think she thinks I have a crush on you lofl) I wanted her to see you juice the lime the same way I do. That is the perfect bite. Thanx for the Cuban
😅 thanks for following along!
@@nicolemclaughlin9844 Hey Nicole, Can you show me a stir-fry using cabbage? My mom made me promise that I would try it
Can you make the pork in a slow cooker? If yes, would it be the same amount of hours, if not, do you have a recipe for it in a slow cooker? I don’t have an oven. TIA.
Fantastic 🎉
Gotta add the Mayo, even more than the mustard.
I always feel that the mustard overwhelms the sandwich and steals the meat as the highlight of the sandwich.
The sandwich, the mojito… (insert the Homer Simpson drool face here)
LOL, OMG I thought I was the only one who uses their teeth to squeeze the juice out of lemons or limes😊😊😊
Add some salami next time. I’m not trying to start a war, but a Tampa Cuban has the salames!
I mentioned that piece of info! And then I tried it on mine when I made them again tonight and I say it’s 💯
Mayo is the secret.
Bring back the app.
That pork shoulder still needed some oven time. When the pork is properly cooked it falls apart as you remove it from the pot. Then you can pull it just by twisting a large fork with one hand. It shouldn’t be in big chunks and require a knife to shred it like hers did.
I cook these 5 at a time for catering. There’s no shame in using minced garlic in a jar or doctoring up some store bought mojo marinade. The pork will have incredible flavor and you will save a lot of time (and money)
For as much as you cook, and eat how do you stay so slim. I need to know you're secret 😊
1st!
second but who cares when she's showing me how to make a delicious sandwich
More crusty scrap dancing please. After a couple more mojitos maybe. Lol
A recipe is close but incomplete I do appreciate the attempt but where the devil is the salami Genoa salami But everything else is spot on so far please don't tell me you'll put a lesson tomato on your Puke
Salami is a Tampa thing. Most other areas in FL don't use it.
Mayonnaise is so wrong
You really tic me off When you basically said you had to go to Key West when the Cuban sandwich originated it was developed for the first time in Tampa Florida which is the whole of the Cuban sandwich the original Cuban sandwich You'll get your facts straight and wear the same originated who makes the best which would be Tampa
Your lack of punctuation is wild. I genuinely have no idea what you’re saying.
