So let’s address some of the complaints for Camerons Spiderman film
    1. It would’ve been shit
Not really sure why people think this. The treatment itself isn't really a script, it’s more like a plot summary of what happens. Ignoring the bridge sex scene, it isn’t actaully that bad.
    2. It’s edgy and dark
True, but this is james cameron. He makes mature films all the time. Being dark doesn't make a film bad. The Terminator and Aliens may be dark but they still had charm and comedy that made them a blast to see. Most of the edgy elements In Spider-Man comes from Peters struggles with his identity and power. His swearing and violent actions are natural and understandable. If you were bullied all your life and felt isolated, gaining extraordinary powers would allow you to express yourself in a way you’ve never seen before. Peter loses himself, and the death of his uncle only made it worse. It’s only at the end that he accepts his role as a hero.
    3. MJ is basically just Liz
    True

Let's not forget; This movie would've been in the 90s, and it would've had a lot of practical action sequences. Look at the action in his Terminator movies. All on screen stunts. You know that Cameron would've filed an actual guy climbing up on the World Trade Center or swinging across the city (a la Darkman) and you know Leonardo DiCaprio would've actually been in the suit most of the time, they would be on screen and not covered in CGI. And the only moment of CGI could've been from Sandman's morphing, and a few background shots of Spider-Man swinging.

I'm conflicted whether this would've been rated R or not. James Cameron hasn't confirmed if it was supposed to. Peter only says ONE F-bomb, (which many PG-13 movies get away with) and bridge scene is mostly vague in it's details, and could've been off screen or cut entirely. The movie would've also come out by 1994/1995, a time when the animated series was out at the time; The same show where Spider-Man wasn't allowed to use his fists, characters not allowed to say "die", no mentions of death and no use of real guns. Comic book movies started to become more family friendly after TMNT or Batman Returns scared kids away.
(Like Batman Returns's script had R-rated levels of scenes cut like Penguin showing Catwoman a "toy" in a umbrella and aims it near her crotch, and later had a sex scene with her (which was filmed according to DeVito.) And a scene where clowns uses guns and murders families on the street.)
You have to remember that this wasn't a full script so who knows what would've stayed or been cut in later drafts. Every movie always changes and becomes what it is during the editing stage but I feel like the studio would have interfered and cut many scenes and lines out to make it more marketable to kids. Just trying to be realistic here. That's just how it works.

That's actually something that happened with 'Spider-Man' (2002). Close to launch, the movie had issues because it almost got a R-rating, mostly due to violence from the climax between Spider-Man and Green Goblin, which is surprising that they even managed to get away with what was in the final cut. Thankfully they managed to get it to an acceptable PG rating at the time.

I think darker stories work for an older peter. Like the marvel knights comic run. It makes sense to me that teen peter would have lighter stories that, even when dealing with heavier stuff, kept things generally upbeat. But as adulthood sinks in, and the toll of his life is weighing down on him, the stories get darker as he gains a deeper understanding of the darkness that exists in the world and the experiences he witnessed firsthand.

Not gonna lie, I think Cameron's version could have worked but in other ways it doesn't. I think his version on Mary Jane would've been more interesting than the other two we've gotten over the years. Giving an explanation for MJ's popularity person makes her a more interesting character rather than what they gave us in Sam Rami's films and even the "Home" trilogy's outcast MJ. I also like the revenge and striking fear into criminals concept they put into the first Amazing Spider-Man film. It shows how he should mature and become a symbol of good. The way you described this film though, I think it could still pass as a PG-13 release. Heck, The Batman passed a PG-13 rating and it's the darkest of all the live-action Batman films.

That actually seems like an interesting take. Imagine a movie so dark, with Peter Parker going through puberty in the worst way possible, getting beat up and humiliated at school, having no success at making friends or finding love, almost dying from radiation, losing the uncle that was one of the only people that cared about him, dealing with the fact his uncle's death was his own fault, unable to get money for his aunt, maybe even considering to take his own life.
Once he gets the powers, he just becomes a full on villain, getting revenge on everyone that made his life hell. Maybe not killing his classmates like an actual school shooter, but he does everything people did to him. When that's not enough anymore, he becomes Spider-Man and starts brutally beating criminals, because that's the only way he can satisfy his desires and finally get rewarded with things like money and fame, even if people were afraid of him.
When he fights a supervillain and gets really close to killing someone that he finds out is actually innocent, that's when he realizes that he's becoming what he hated, the same type of person that took away his uncle, and THAT'S when he finally manages to overcome his chaotic desire for payback. It's not guilt, it's not responsability, it's not even inspiration. It's truth.
Tell me that wouldn't be an amazing origin for Spider-Man. Having a main character that goes through all this growth, it would be a thrill ride for all the public, young and old.

  • @radrno7
    @radrno7 Před 2 lety +79

I'll say it. This could've legit been the best Spider-Man movie ever made, even to this day. Why? Because it pushes a boundary that only a few comic book movies do: what makes a character human?
When you watch a movie, you want to be able to understand the protagonist, so you can follow their story and get that sense of "what have I gained from this movie?", not just from an cinematic experience, but also from a story perspective.
Most of the time, we'll see a superhero get their powers, fight a villain and win, the basic premise. How you do that premise is what makes it special, and this script definitely has it, putting not only its characters in very realistic situations, but also providing a point of view that deconstructs that premise while also giving us that odd feeling of "what if it was me?", which is genious.
Peter Parker going through the struggles of an average kid, growing resentful towards even the ones he love, facing the cold truth of life as he explores the world in his journey of self discovery. All of that will impregnate the minds of everyone, at the thought of realizing what people really have to deal with everyday.
The only issue I'd say is the ending. It doesn't seem to serve much of a purpose but to fill a gap on an already tragic story. I believe the ending should be something that gives us that big climax that makes the entire plot come full circle, be it a happy or a sad ending, with Peter learning the main lesson behind all his suffering.
I'd really like to see a new Spider-Man movie as close as possible to this, with the title character becoming a true menace compared to what we're so used to now. Maybe not another reboot of Peter Parker, but maybe a darker version of him? Kaine Parker, the Scarlet Spider comes to mind.
Sony is so used to making villains antiheroes, maybe it's time to make heroes antiheroes.

    3. Somehow, the story seems to be a bit inspired by many coming of age movies of 1980s, with that usual criminal stuff that was a bit of a trend during the 90s.
    4. Was Electro here Norman Osborn? Doc Ock? Definitely not Electro like in comics.

Maybe not an origin story as we've had a million of those already, but a dark and gritty, small scale Spider-Man story set in the 80s, in his late 30s, and with a Gabriel Dell'Otto style suit is something I've always wanted.
It doesn't mean Spider-Man himself has to be dark and edgy as he can still be himself, but it would allow for some really hard hitting and scary villain moments, and some really intense on-screen action scenes that we haven't seen yet.

    I'm ngl- I love it.
The dialogue needs work and the story could use a few tweaks here and there but overall it actually sounds like a good idea!
I like how it's more similar to The Batman (2022) with the hero being dark and edgy and misguided as well. This movie makes Peter seem like a real kid with real thoughts with real actions. The fact that he started off doing tricks in the street for money sounds just like what a new yorker would do if they had the crazy ability. And him being scared and disgusted of his powers is also brilliant. Anyone would be terrified if they woke up on a water tower and was covered in webs when they woke up.
This brings such a more realistic tone to Peter Parker it's awesome. Of course the bridge scene could be cut out😅but everything else sounded pretty solid!
I like how Electro is basically Peter with powers, but instead of his insecurities- Electro has his superiority complex. Basically Electro is Peter with his feeling of superior. What Peter could've become with these powers. This story sounds pretty awesome from this summary so far, wouldn't mind seeing more of this in the future this ain't bad
