  • Hugo, Oklahoma is known as Circus City, USA. It has been the home of numerous circus companies during the winter time off season. Because of that there is a special section in the Mount Olivet Cemetery called Showman's Rest. In it you will find the final resting place for clowns, announcers, animal trainers and various other circus performers. The cemetery is also home for the famous cowboys Lane Frost and Freckles Brown.

    Just discovered your channel... awesome! It is military of origin, pennies just mean you payed your respects...A nickel means that you and the deceased soldier trained at boot camp together. If you served with the soldier, you leave a dime. A quarter is very significant because it means that you were there when that soldier was killed...we adopted this around the time of Vietnam :)

      Yes you are correct on the coins which I see at a lot of places. Even on non military graves. I wondered if they meant something similar in the circus world. Someone left a comment recently that the bubbles were in place of balloons. It's the only cemetery i have seen with bubbles. Thanks for finding my channel and watching.

      The movie is filled with a lot of BS though. They made his dad out to be an overbearing jerk. Lane was actually my cousin, and Clyde Frost is my uncle. He's a very sweet man, he loves his son very much, and he's extremely proud of him. Every time I see him, he's wearing a commemorative belt buckle, and the ring they gave Lane when he won. Last time I saw him, I asked him to let me hold the ring. It's massive and weighs a ton. Super impressive. But he's an extremely nice man, so it's messed up how they portrayed him in the movie.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  Před 5 lety +1

      That's a really cool relation. I haven't heard anything about his parents in a long time. The unfortunate thing Hollywood does that to the majority of based on a true story movies. They always thing they know a better way of presenting the actual story. That's really unfortunate. But I will say one positive thing about the movie. It's kept Lane's memory alive and has kept younger cowboys inspired to do more.

    • @techmaster242
      @techmaster242 Před 5 lety +1

      @@RhettyforHistory His real parents are actually in the movie. At the beginning of the movie, Lane (Luke Perry) walks up to an elderly couple at a rodeo and says hi to them. That's the actual Clyde and Elsie Frost. I never even got to meet him, I was only 11 when he died, and we lived pretty far away from them. But I knew of him. I think I first met his parents at the funeral for Lane's and my grandmother, Clyde's and my dad's mom. But they're good people.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  Před 5 lety

      I will say that his grave is well visited and its moving to see little cowhands leaving momentos in his honor. I know he was a great person and his parents workand hard to carry on that legacy at countless rodeos after he was gone. They do sound like outstandingly good people.

      @@RhettyforHistory It's for anyone and found on anyone's graves. The Greeks put a coin in the deceased's mouth, and over time, people started putting them over the deceased's eyes, to pay for crossing the River Styx. This is just another way to "help" a person on their way when you don't have access to their body.

    I love this! These entertainers obviously wanted their legacy to live on and wanted these uniquely detailed markers to be seen. Thank you for sharing! I live in Columbus Ohio, and I recently learned that the nearby shopping center used to be the Sells Circus grounds. I saw a documentary and old photos of monkeys and elephants that would wander off the grounds and into the neighborhood where I live now. They left when they were bought out by Barnum and Bailey. Sadly, there's no historical markers or cemeteries like these nearby. If I hadn't seen that documentary, I would have never known about this!

      I was a big Luke Perry fan. I loved 90210 especially the first three seasons. But I also loved 8 Seconds. I saw that in a theatre that was packed in Oklahoma. I was worried about how he would do in a part that was drastically different. But I really feel like he embodied Lane and his family's legacy well. I know that there are some differences between the movie and real life but that movie has mad fans of Lane's where he wouldn't have had them otherwise. I've been in that cemetery several times and there are always gifts from people on Lane's grave and I'm amazed at how many are little kids. So sad that no Luke is gone as well. Perez, Samuel (1969-2001) - Acrobat - His tombstone shows him doing a flying trapeze trick. A member of the famous Perez flying act from Mexico City, Samuel performed a stunt know as the Wheel of Death - a stunt with a jumping rope atop a spinning wheel. His marker includes acrobatic equipment along with lovely flowers. His career was short lived due to illness.

      True story
      I had family that used to live across the street from cemetery, we visited them at lot as kids, while growing up in the late ‘70’s early ‘80’s kids from the neighborhood had stories it was a haunted area and you could hear elephant trumpeting from the elephant statues guarding the graves, but later told by the adults it was the elephants from Brookfield zoo and elephants could be heard up to 6 miles...as kids, that scared us..lol

      It's a great cemetery to visit with a lot of stories in it. Hugo, Oklahoma was the home of many circuses. Sad thing is at the time of filming this there were two circuses there. Now there is only one. The other that just recently called it quits had ties to the Barnum family. They were related somehow.

      I thought I had heard last year that the last circus had finally gone out of business, because of all the animal rights protests.
