- Most of you know I come from an oil family and spent some time working in the oilfield on drilling rigs, running backhoes and driving trucks. That is the reason this is one of my favorite regional museums. I love the history of oil and this museum represents it very well!

In college I had the best job ever. I worked for a company that supplied oil fields with parts (bearings, belts, etc.). I loved going to the work sites and dropping off parts. I was amazed at how hard those men worked. Made me pay more attention in class. Grateful for hardworking blue collar guys!
I grew up on Wood St in the 70s, my friends and I used to play on that old wooden derrick, climbed it more than once... Free range South Taft kids....
Mark, Nice video. I'm Jacob Hines. My grandfather was Joe Fregeau. I've watched some of your videos before and actually found out about the video from someone out of state. Bernie Fregeau is my aunt. Twice a year, i demonstrate blacksmithing as I've taken over after my grandfather passed away.
Very cool to hear from you! I've known Bernie most of my life. My Dad is Ron McGowan, who was a Farrier and friend of Joe's, and did ornamental blacksmithing until about 2010. Glad you found the video!
I enjoyed this video, like all of your videos. Those pump jacks with the walking beam are called grasshoppers in the industry. My dad was an oil and gas broker in the San Joaquin Valley. He retired in the 70's after the development of the Yowlumme oil field outside of Maricopa because of all of the bickering among the oil companies that had leases in that field.
The circular "gear" on the floor was used to change the orientation of the bit so it didn't just pound the same place every stroke. Same principle as a hand held rock drill. Every time you hit it with your hammer, rotate it a little.
Very cool tour and very informative Mark, nice one! (Dave).
Very interesting video Thank You
Those are cones on the bit. A lot of old school oilfield stuff. Good video.
The blue building at the 19:35 portion of the video was the old dog house for McFarland energy. It was located on the McDonald lease in North midway sunset. I spent a lot of time there as a kid and teenager. It was not nearly as nice as it looks now. Man if those walls could talk. The old wooden Derrick was also donated by McFarland energy.
Excellent tour Mark!
Mark you did an excellent job. I would be worst at remembering things....lol Thank you for a great job well done. I love to get to California someday and maybe we can chat and take some excellent photo and video. Thanks again Robert.
Thanks! Just let me know if you ever head this way!
Thanks for the video...Very informative..Never really knew how all that work...Interesting...Keep up the good work.. Watch all your videos..Happy holidays to you and family!!!
Cool tour Mark!
Jacob Hines is my gf Rachel's dad. He actually volunteers there
Buena Vista lake is 100% open full of water now okthanks we went to it back in the day1970s up in the 1980s 85 86 , or so , I skied around that lake for hours and hours and hours with are all we drive wooden vintage boat 389 Pontiac powered , it was a Straight line in and out box with a reverse clutch not a v-drive ,thanks BigAl California.
That's not the original Buena Vista Lake. The original was enormous. It dried up when the Isabella Dam was completed in 1955 and was converted to farm land. The small, recreational lakes there now are Buena Vista and Lake Webb. Both are fed by the California Aqueduct and are man made.
Ok hopper company was right in Bakersfield, my dad had them build the inter liners for plant 1 turbos in US BORAX back in the 1970 and 80 s , hopper industrial corporation was offer union I think or somewhere out that way lolthanks BigAl California
Hopper finally closed shop in the 90's, if I'm not mistaken, but they built a lot of the steel products that exist in the region. The plant was on Union between the tracks and the 178 freeway. They even had their own RR spur. Thanks for checking it out!
I’ve heard the pump units referred to as ‘Donkey Pumps’, which I prefer to call them.
Grasshoppers, as you know, are ubiquitous throughout the LA area.
41:35 is called a ( hit and miss ) or a put put bang engine.
Fantastic video Mark, answered a lot of questions about drilling I didn't know I had haha, very informative.
Would love to see some more trail riding videos when you have the chance, I'm guessing you're waiting till the weather cools down a bit.
I'm really glad you enjoyed it! A riding video is coming up Saturday, but it's at a motocross track. Zayden's first time on one and my first time since 2008!
@@MarkClayMcGowan sounds good to me! I'm a lifelong Motocross guy so looking forward to it. 👍
Very cool museum. A lot of information about getting oil out of the ground, It would be interesting to know about the roustabouts and roughnecks who worked with the drillers to create those wells :) I liked the Doctor's office - almost a bit of Frankenstein in there.
Actually, Studebaker made wheelbarrows before they made wagons. The miners in Nevada and California liked them better than others.
I not sure if it has anything to do with the fright train 🚂 strike 🪧 the locomotive engineers , and their contract and I’m noticing the train are coming thruogh Boron more now with just the engines no cars at all three times more no cars trains , so anyway thanks for the fire oil vlog thanks BigAl California praise Jesus Christ grace amen 🙏
BNSF is stationing manned helpers at Sanborn, which is between Edwards and Mojave, to help heavier trains from there to Cameron, just east of Tehachapi. What you are seeing are likely the helpers moving back to Barstow for service, then back to Sanborn.
Well tomorrow is the start of the rail strike 🪧 if the president and other don’t get a order to force them to stay one the job , 5 unions and 4 of them said no to the offers, they are asking for better working conditions and money 💴 and family time and sick leave, probably need to getter up sone food and gas waters just in case , I hope they get there contracted fulfilled Right thanks BigAl California praise Jesus Christ grace grace grace amen 🙏
We've never been allowed to strike in the past. I don't see it happening now either. The government had air traffic controllers to take over when that happened. They have no railroaders, and it is unlikely the government will allow the nations commerce to come to a standstill right now. But, I guess we'll see!
With all the oil kern county has you would think Bakersfield and other cities would be pristine looking
The environmentalist movement and lobby in California has killed the oil industry. Most of these companies are hanging on by their nails. More wells are being abandoned every year than are being drilled. Aera is the only major oil company that still has a large presence in Bakersfield, and there are none on the West Side. It's very disheartening. That being said, Bakersfield still has some very nice parts of town. A city's wealth has little to do with the homeless and indigent that have taken over some parts of cities. It's a mess! Thanks for checking it out!
