In today's video, I'm going to help you get into the style of jazz-rock-fusion.
You don't need to learn new scales to get into this music, the ones you already know are fine. The thing that is going to give sense to your fusion improvisations is rhythm.
In this case, we are going to use a Dorian backing track. Just use the minor pentatonic and add the major second and the major sixth.
Don't play all the time, take pauses so you can recharge your brain. Use subdivisions (in this style sixteenth notes work great) and create rhythmic phrases as the base for your soloing.
Then, introduce some outside playing. One trick is to fill your pentatonics with chromatic notes. Another approach is what I call diagonal shapes, patterns of notes that you can move around the fretboard wherever you want.
Finally, when you hit a rut, slow things down.

Dude Ive been playing for 25 years and the concept off fusion has stumped me. By the end of this lesson I was playing my 1st fusion licks. Cheers.
Right? Crystal clear and most will be up and running immediately
Same here!! Just a great lesson thank you David!!!
agreed
@2:17 --- "It's better to play the wrong notes with a good rhythm sense...rather than good notes with poor rhythm phrasing."
^^^^^ This right here is some much needed advice for most players (myself included). Thanks for the great lesson!
My jazz professor used to always say a good note is only a half a step away. So many times that saved my freakouts.
This fellow is a very, very good teacher!
Yeah i agree, thank you David, one thing though, one of my fav players is tom quayle, but the man who started it all back in 1969 was Allan Holdsworth, who is an absolute genius even today after his very sad passing omg ;(
Great source for those who really want to dig into fusion..love from Nepal đłđ”
This guy always amaze me. Such a good teacher. Thanks David!
Your teaching skills are so amazing! Really manages to reach everyone! You are one of da best David!
Subscribed in a heartbeat! Beautifully clear lesson thank you
Been watching your videos from the very beginning, brother. Always love your great teaching and outstanding phrasing skills.
That's what I call give a hand. Thouse Master tips really blew my mind, and Im not talking about freaking out, ok just a little. Thanks SOO much, the trick is in the simplicity of how you explain the things. Nice channel, I'm subscribing for more stuff.
You were the first video I ran across when I typed what is fusion music. I'm so glad you came up first. This is exactly the type of music i want to play.
woah the idea of shapes is so simple, yet so sonically satisfying. It sounds like its both out and in at the same time. Very easy to implement , but sounds very complex. mind blown.
If only I had found your channel earlier. Been looking for youtube guitar teacher that teaches the very basic knowledge of playing guitar, namely getting along with the rhythms. So many "teachers" teach how to use scale the right way, but never seen one that teaches the way you can use every scale you know. Thank you so much. Greetings from new subscriber ;)
David Wallimann - the best, most insightful instructor on youtube, no doubt, bar none!
Great video, it really helped me with my ability to improvise. It feels like I've been enlightened
This lesson is GOLD - not only for guitar-players!
This was awesome and fun and helped incredibly, thanks!
David this was amazing and really drives the concept home. Thank you for the video!
Thank you! This is what I've been looking or days now. I just subscribed to the channel.
The 'freak out' is the perfect name to what happens! Excellent lesson man, thanks
Thanks your Demonstrations were great, thanks keep them comming.
David, thanks for this. A very succinct and clear explanation on how to approach fusion improvisation. You clearly have a strong foundation in this. Please make some more videos on fusion and improvisation. CZcams is very light on these guitar subjects. For other CZcamsrs looking for good videos on improv and phrasing check out Barney Kessels series which is floating around.
Thanks again David - even your 'freakouts' sound bang on point ;)
Thank you David..im getting it slowlyđ
I couldn't hit subscribe fast enough. Excellent video, thank you so much!
What a teacher you are man!! Thank you!!

you, sir, are a wicked awesome teacher.
Great lesson. I guess I was applying some of this all along but didn't realize it.
Great video, thank you!
Very helpful as always, thanks!
Thank you! The diagonal shapes is a neat little trick to add
Yeah that was immediately added to my toolbox.
Dude, this was great video! I'm a Fusion FREAK!, '(70- '86) Play the reeds, but really enjoyed the lesson. You're a good teacher. Plan on watching your other videos this weekend. Thanks and Cheers
Thank you David, it is far the best video i have seen on the subject. I work on fusion phrasing for years and for the first time i have a perfect explanation of what to do. Flow, chromatisms and shapes. You are great David.
Agreed! I started messing around with these concepts and holy crap, it sounds like fusion!
Absolutely agree!!!!! Iâve been trying and researching and this video alone changed my perspective!! And Iâm no beginner, I went to college for music and I guess I was trying to over complicate it and figure out what scales they play! This is awesome!..

Freak out , thatâs the idea! Thks.
Thanks man, Amazing lesson!
Wow....so good...seems so simply
Man this is badass brother!!
Wow... you just got it all, thanks a lot for sharing that, you rule, dude...
Wonderful! I always imagine those fusion sounding notes are complicated modes and scales that you play over even more complicated harmonies. Now I know they're just chromatic gimmicks..now I know..
Loved this. it almost feels like you're an older version of me, by the things you said in your channel's trailer. Subscribed! If you ever do a full blown deep dive into fusion guitar course, I'd love to purchase it. just a thought for the future. Have a great day, and thank you for the great content!
Cool lesson
Iâve been trying and researching this subject for years and this video alone changed my perspective!! And Iâm no beginner, I went to college for music (classical ) and I guess I was trying to over complicate it and figure out what scales they play! This is awesome!..
Thank you so much!!
@@Wallimann So well explained it almost feels like cheating!! lol
Very useful information that I need right now!
thankyou! đ
What kind of pickups our best for fusion rock great stuff love it
In addition to guitar skills, your teaching skills and methodology are amazing. I know my modes I know scales I know chords, I even know melodic minor I know that you can play super locrian on V degree and so on and so on, but never figured out how to sound fusion. Thanks to your video (still not. Fully comfortable as I would like, but it's the whole point of guitarist to be never satisfied đ) I was able to do my first real fusion improvisation!!
You were simply one of my firsts fusion unlocker đ!
Thanks a lot đž đ„
Thank you so much man, you made my day!
@@Wallimann you're welcome! Keep sharing those content đ đž đ„
great video
That was an insanely good tutorial.
Awsome stuff man
Best Guitar teacher in the WORLD ! // +100
You're an excellent guitar player brother! I just subbed. Also, what kind of guitar is that, I really like that with the PAF style humbuckers.

This guy's so good he can loose his pick and find it right away (doesn't even struggle picking it up)
Super
I purchased one of your instruction videos around 15 years ago. I'm sure that have gotton better .sent a link on this topic,
You are a great musician and a great teacher. Thank you for your generosity.
Shit! This is definitely one of the best lessons Iâve ever seen. Wish you could analyse the chord structure of my current composition cause I feel Iâm changing my style right now, but I donât know where to go.
Hi David! I am a huge Steely Dan fan and obviously you know where I am going twith this; this is ecxactly what I have been looking for. Do you offer 1on1 lessons for fussion or even a course? I am a member of your Guitar Playback.
I signed up but cant find this lesson on your page. Awsome brother
I am new to fusion guitar and your videos are very helpful. Serious question: when do you sound BAD at playing fusion guitar, of in other words: what should one avoid? Playing with bad timing, playing passing notes slowly, landing on passing notes...?
Great video , realy enjoyable and useful ! Peux tu me dire le tone presets que tu utilise s'il-te-plais ? J'aime le son...Je percois reverb, delay et un peu de crunch ?
Can you do a video on achieving the tone please? I've always wanted to see a video on how to get that 90's Shawn Lane, Greg Howe tone.
Hello David, you are so Amazing, can you share that fractal preset
Thank you... You opened A FEW doors for me!
Where are you getting your tones? Theyâre always spot-on... great vid, BTW.
Axe FX.
hi david very nice guitar playing..i looked at comments and couldnt see the answer i was looking for...what fedal are you using ?..... much appreciated thanks for a great video ...cheers
I wish I could learn from you in person
One more HUGE thing about "GOOD" Jazz Fusion in compositional skills/song writing.
Hey David...the diagonal shape that u used will vary mode to mode or we can keep it same?
Just had to pause to say that I appreciated the seamless change in camera angle at 4:50. Keeps things fresh, and to my adhd brain, the slight novelty it brings makes it easier to stay focused.
What's wrong with those freakout-moments? They sound great to my ears! Nothing wrong with staying in off-scale-land a little longer.
I was thinking the same thing. But I think he's referring to uncontrolled freak outs, not necessarily sounding like you're freaking out but actually in total control.
May I ask what you use for funk tone? it's amazing
When someone asked me a while ago "why don't you like jazz fusion"? I said because it sounds like they are hitting all the wrong noted while being in time and it makes my head and lips move oddly.
