  • This old Honda has a "STOP" switch...which isn't an emergency kill switch. I wanted some additional safety on the dinghy, so in this video, I install an emergency kill switch from Sierra (West Marine) with a lanyard that will stop the engine if I go overboard.

I have an ‘80’s model honda 5hp. The kill switch is in the end of the tiller handle. Any idea how to approach this? Are you aware of any videos. I really want the safety of the lanyard kill switch. Thanks

There should be two wires that go in to the tiller that go to the switch. Once you verify the wires, cut them and run to a new lanyard kill switch. I don’t own this engine anymore so that’s the best suggestion I would have.

Hi Jay, sorry that’s not something I dove in to when I owned that engine. I wouldn’t be any help on that.

Hi Darko, while certainly do appreciate your confidence in me based on my videos, I am just a hobbiest, tho passionate, boater…I don’t have professional experience to provide that kind of guidance. My amateur opinion would be that the carb needs to be either cleaned or replaced. I replaced the carb on mine (a guy on eBay sells new and rebuilt carbs for $120-160) and that fixed my starting issue. Could be the fuel pump but that is such a simple component that they rarely need work. Thanks for the question tho!
