Fascinating presentation. A snapshot into a time when hands and trades built America.
Thanks, Mike
My dad talked a lot about people making 50 cents a day during the depression. Picking cotton or farm harvests, anything to eat. So yes, there were men standing in line just for a chance to break stones all day. This has been a great presentation, Mike, Thanks.
Thanks yoga, Mike
I know it says stone but this is pure gold. Thank you so much for this record.
Thanks R, Mike
I agree! He's a great storyteller. It's like he was there describing it as it happens. He could moonlight as a horse racing reporter or a boxing reporter on any sports network and make bank.
Thanks R ,I agree, Mike
Mr. Haynes does a fine job demonstrating and explaining how it was done back then. Tough work, tough life for meager pay. Thanks Mike.
Thanks Juliet, Mike
Hi Mike, thanks for keeping the old days alive. We can all learn a lot from this gentleman’s passion and knowledge of his craft. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Be well, Mike.
Thanks Philip, Happy Thanksgiving to you also, Mike
His energy and passion is inspiring, we’re indebted to people like him for keeping knowledge and skill alive.
Unbelievable how much time and energy went into one cobble in a time where food, clean water and shelter were scarce.
Thanks, very true, Mike
Thanks Mike! Really enjoyed that. Talk about hard work. We have no idea what hard work is!
Hi Gibson, your right ,things have changed, Mike
What an amazing character Stephan is. And also an amazing demonstration of how to work, cut, and polish granite. Nice one Mike, really enjoyed watching that and give a big shout to Stephan for me.
Thanks Darren, Mike
Great Job Mike presenting this work, and an even better job by Steve. It's wonderful watching a man work stone with nothing but a chisel and hammer to see something beautiful created for the ages.
Thanks Dune, Mike
This guy really tells the story of how old timers did things. Id like to check this place out now, thanks Mike
Thanks, Mike
Thanks for keeping this beautiful art alive!
Thanks Nunya, Mike
Another top notch video Mike. First time I heard about the method for polishing stones. This also shoots down those crazy ideas about the pyramids and all that.
Hi Gill, I agree, Mike
That's the thing right, when you actually watch and listen to master stonemasons it makes all those crazy cats who say "the Egyptians couldn't have done it" look silly right. Sure, it is really hard work working granite but Mike has answered every question I had about that. I just wish more of those crazy cats would take the time to actually learn about stone masonry before talking about "lost tech and aliens". Peace to ya my friend.
Thanks Darren, I agree, Mike
Absolutely incredible. What love this man has for his craft and teaching!
Hi Brawk, I agree, Mike
Love his enthusiasm, great video once again Mike.
Thanks Tony, Mike
What a character! ❤ Very knowledgeable & entertaining! ❤
Thanks again, Mike
Very interesting...those men really worked HARD!! brings a whole new appreciation to how things were done.
Thanks Sue, Mike
Excellent. Experience and passion
Thanks SGD, Mike
So glad to find this. Quarrying is of particular interest to me, its hard to find videos on traditional stoneworking. I plan to visit this place now that i know its there! Im watching through all your videos. I appreciate you doing them all.
Thanks, Mike
Excellent presentation. Stephan Haynes gave me more insights in a few minutes than the ancient tech youtubers did in years.
Thanks, I agree, Mike
Fascinating. There is so much work in these old stone buildings.
Thanks Sofi, Mike
Wow, those men worked so hard, the results are impressive. Nice video Mike.
Thanks Clint, Mike

Because I've learned from Mike
Jerry in Indianapolis
But back in 1981 I made sidewalk steps...flower pots and Mason bird bathes...from oil molds and a vibrator table and a medium size mixer. Avon Tack and feed shop

Thanks Len, Mike
Time when men were made of steel and ships out of wood. The level with winding sticks is pretty cool. Levels stone all by hand. Pretty impressive.
Nice presentation.
Thanks JD, Mike
Oh wow! A wealth of information here, thank you for sharing your knowledge
Thanks, Mike
Just precious! Amazing.
Thanks Richard, Mike
@@MikeHaduck I'm going to the museum this morning. I never would have known without your great video!
Thanks tell Steve you seen my video, he was very helpful, Mike
Love all the masonary teaching. One video I can’t find anywhere is how to rebuild a firebox with fire brick. If you need a house to do the video on you can come to mine 😂😊. Would love to learn how to rebuild our firebox. Masonry is such a beautiful craft.
Hi Amanda, haven't come across one but I should put it on my list, thanks Mike
great to see howit was done
Thanks Savio, Mike
Excellent tutorial. Happy Thanksgiving, Mike.
Thanks Brian, Happy Thanksgiving also, Mike
So much knowledge!
Thanks John, Mike
Brilliant Mike
Thanks James, Mike
Great video!
Thanks M, Mike
Interesting video Mike if you ever need video idea like to know how they made Mill Stones and see them in use think it would be cool.
We have a big Granite Dam near me that supplies Boston with water. The old pics of Old Stone church horses hauling large blocks really cool stuff.
Hi Steve, that does sound cool, will put that on my list, Mike
Pure gold.
Thanks, Mike
I never thought about Maine having granite quarries. I think of them harvesting lumber and using it to build the old wooden sailing ships. We’ll have to go up there one of these days and visit my friend Dave who moved up to Waldoboro almost 40 years ago and my cousin who lives up in Camden.
Hi J, it's a ride but worth it, Mike
Thank you Mike 🥀🥀🥀
Thanks Eman, Mike
Nice video again Mike
Thanks Matt, Mike
That’s a good video. You can really tell he knows what he’s talking about
Thanks Matt, Mike
I like the presentation. Interesting speech pattern, to say the least.
Thanks Alexandre, Mike
spectacular
Thanks Dave, Mike
This guy is funny 😄
Thanks, Mike
Wondering if you would be willing to do a video on how the "OId Timers" used to develop water springs and build spring houses. There doesn't seem to be much good information on this topic. The spring houses I've found information on seem to be mostly made out of stone and I wonder what one would have to take into account building something like that while the water is gushing out of the ground, the constant moisture to the rest of the structure, and the freezing and thawing between winter and summer. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge!
Hi Elizabeth, in our area they were mostly built to keep everything from freezing like a root cellar, they did anything that worked, thanks Mike
Very interesting. He has the flair for making it dramatic.
Hi Das, very true, Mike
wow. very dramatic....i like it.
Thanks Klaus, Mike
Hi I just got a copy of the book “Practical Masonry” by William R Purchase this video has brought the book to life for me, the method of how to create plane or flat a surface, the Patent Hammer with the stacked blades. Steve Hayne what a great character he is, he lifts it of the pages of the book and brings it to it to life. Thank you
PS Also just got “The Art of the StoneMason” by Ian Cramb it’s good too, it includes a picture of a example of stone wall from Pennsylvania, it’s one surrounding the cemetery of the Silver Spring Presbyterian Church in Mechanicsburg if that is anywhere near you. Thank you for another great vid.
Thanks David, I appreciate hearing that, Mike
He makes stonework so cool it makes me want to dust off my hammers and chisels.
Hi Jeremiah, the last of his kind, it's all disappearing, thanks Mike
Great video. Awesome place. Stephan should be a Pro Wrestling WWE or UFC commentator. 🤠
Thanks Willie, Mike
Great video, hey Mike I have some really hard sand/lime stone that wants to on a angle.its two to 5 inches thick. Recommend a video of yours to correct it.
Hi Jonathan, I don't know what you mean, I have videos on " stone veneer installation" and " early American stonework" plus " rockfacing and shaping stone" they might help, tha.thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck I'm sorry, I have really hard sand or limestone I've been trying to face and it keeps braking back at an angle. Maybe I hit it at more of an angle to make up for it.... sometimes my mind gets ahead of my typing 🙃
Hello Mike, I have a portion of fired clay by my house that is part of my sewer latteral in Ohio. It looks like they used concrete at the joints. I was wondering if you could help me by letting me know what blend they used at the joints. Thank you so much and I love the t shirt you sent me.
Hi, I can't say what the inspector would require, in the old days we just used a starter type mortar or a Portland and sand mix, I would ask the locals, thanks Mike
@@MikeHaduck Thank you. Your input is gold sir. Ok will ask
I want that guy to do the voice over in Commercials...
Thanks Fergus, Mike
I bought plug & feathers on Amazon and a rock hammer from local masonry store but couldn't find star chisel. Does anyone make star chisels anymore? I had to buy an antique one on e-bay.
Hi Bob, they are getting rare but I got a couple at the flea markets, thanks Mike
I wonder why they didn't use a wood/metal holder to hold and turn the chisels/drill?
Hi Matt, I actually have one of those holders, thanks Mike
can you demonstrate bronze age tools please ?
I don't think he is that old 🤣
Hi Sherman, I am not that old yet, thanks mike
@@MikeHaduck huh
Poor gal trying to stay out of your shots!
Thanks, Mike
What the???
Thanks , Mike
How the heck did Fetterman beat Dr Oz? I don’t get it.
Hi Joe, it wasn't me, Mike
@@MikeHaduck I think some people thought Oz was spelled with a FETT
Not a laser to be found.
Thanks, Mike
No safety glasses, I guess wants to be authentic like it was done in the past?
Eyelids are the original safety glasses 🤣
Hi Curt, I can't tell him what to do, thanks Mike
One man, one rock per day !
Hi Adam, different times for sure, thanks Mike
♥w♥o♥w♥!! You should look into using a service such as Promo-SM.
Thanks Mike
