Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone was awarded the Navy Cross as well for his actions in Iwo Jima. The Navy Cross is the 2nd highest award a Marine/Sailor can get right under the Medal Of Honor which he was already awarded for his actions previous. He was the only Marine in WW2 to be awarded such honors.
He and Lena were only married for 7 months for such a little time.
He remains a Marine Corps legend to this day. He has a Destroyer named after him in the Navy.

    • @Patrick-xv6qv

Correction, John Basilone was the only enlisted man in the Marine Corps to be awarded both the Medal of Honor and the Navy Cross in WW2. Several officers were awarded both. 26 medal of Honors were awarded on Iwo Jima alone.
During WW2 for some reason the War dept. did not like awarding higher rank medals of Valor to enlisted personal. The recommendations for a medal normally got down graded. A Medal of Honor to a Navy Cross, a Navy Cross to a Silver Star, etc.

Chuck Tatum, who I met a couple of times at Iwo Jima 5th Marine reunions that I attended with my grandfather, who was a platoon sergeant in the same company as Basilogne. Chuck Tatum wrote a very good book about Iwo Jima titled Red Blood, Black Sand. Tatum had an interesting life after WW2 and built race cars. Until the day he died, Tatum idilozed Basilone.
Basilone was actually killed by a mortar round and not shot, but I guess showing him shot was more dramatic.
I shame they didn't show the entire battle of Iwo Jima, but understandable because this episode was about Basilone. Iwo to the day is considered the bloodiest battle in the history of the Marine Corps. A battle that was only supposed to take 3 or 4 days took over 30 days. Iwo was the only battle in the Pacific where the US Marine casualties outnumbered the Japanese.
When taking the first of the 2 airfields on Iwo, the Japanese defenses were so well organized and they were in their tunnels and caves that the Marines advance was only on average 20 yards an hour.
The tunnel and cave system the Japanese had built and dug stretched from one end of the Island to the other. On Mt Suribachi there was a tunnel and cave system 7 stories deep into the mountain. It was so complex and the Japanese fought from those caves an tunnels that one Marine Major commented that the Marines fought on the Island and the Japanese fought in the island. When planes flew over the island for reconnaissance photos the only troops they could see in the photos were the Marines because the Japanese were underground.
It was also the first time in Marine Corps history where black Marines fought alongside white Marines. Black Marines were used as rear troops who did supply etc. But due the the number of casualties the Marines were taking on Iwo and they could not be reinforced, Gen. Howland Smith, the General in charge of the Marines on Iwo, sent Black Marienes into combat for the first time as reinforcements.
The main reason the Battle was so difficult for the Marines was because of the Japanese General in command of the Japanese troops on Iwo. Kuribayashi was the best General the Japanese had and he was a brilliant mitary tactician. He knew he could not defeat the Marines and knew he was not going to be reinforced so he wanted to at least make the Battle drag on for as long as he could and have his men kill as many Americans as they could before they were killed.
He was the one who had the tunnel system extended and to be used defensively as well as it was and he didn't believe on the suicide banzai charges and ordered his officers not to make them, they were not happy about that because the Japanes felt those charges were an honorable way to die in battle.
When the Marines first landed on the beaches, Kuribayashi orded his men to to fire and they waited until several waves of Marines landed before they opened fire. That way the Japanese could inflict as many casualties as possible. Kuribayashi order to that waa a actually going against orders he was given. It was the standard tactic for the Japanese to fire on the Americans even before they landed. But Kuribayashi saw that tactic had not worked at all and went against his orders.
Iwo was a very important island to take. For the two airfields, which were used extensively, and that it was the first battle on Japanese land. It was given back to Japan after the war.
To this day the island is only open to non Japanese citizens one time a year and that is the anniversary of the battle and many veterans of the battle and their families go. They have to get a special visa from the Japanese govt. to go there and they are nit allowed to pick up anything from the ground they may find except the black sand of the island.

  • @BryanWhite77
    @BryanWhite77 Před rokem +15

Remember that when John had been on Guadalcanal, the Japanese army relied on the banzai charge as a main tactic. That's what he was used to and he even yells that out as Evanson and Tatum are training "The Japanese banzai charge is right there". On Iwo Jima, the Japanese were mainly in a defensive position and forced the Marines to fight for every inch of the island. So, he may have been experienced in combat, but he was also learning a lot about a new type of combat on the fly.

    • @TheKyfe
      @TheKyfe Před rokem +2

It was specific to Iwo Jima. The Japanese Commanding General faced mutiny almost the entire time for NOT ordering the banzai attack. His subordinates thought he was a coward.

The beginning of this episode always gets me. I remember years ago, I was almost 30, and I'd read everything I could find up that point about WW2. I thought I'd known about everything in the pacific theater. Then, one of my friends told me about Sledge's book and mentioned Peleliu, and I said "Where?" I was shocked to then find out how bad it was, and how it had virtually disappeared from history books.
Unfortunately, for Americans the European theater really overshadowed the Pacific. So many men died, were wounded, or were mentally scarred on hundreds of tiny little jungle islands. And it wasn't just the men who saw combat. A friend of mine's dad was a Seabee (Naval Construction Battalion). He never saw combat in the pacific, but his job was to deliver bulldozers onto the islands once it was safe to do so. I can't remember which islands he was on, but his story was about driving bulldozers onto the beach from landing craft and trying to avoid the bodies that were still there. He never fired a shot, never had a shot fired at him, but he was terribly scarred by the experience.

He used his staff in New Zealand to take 100 hours of the black and white graining films and 500 hours of 1950# interviews with British soldiers who fought in "The Great War". If you think this was difficult that will be mind altering. To see what 4 years and 2+MILLION British alone casualties, while gaining only milea of ground can do to people...stand by!
It is truly a study in history as the Ukrainians are repeating the very same conflict and have lost nearly 400+ in little over a year. The meat grinder of trench warfare.
You will truly appreciate things if you watch it. Please see the 2hr theatre version where Mr Jackson explains how he made the ghost of 1914 file become real talking moving men that you would say hello to. Fascinating stuff

Basilone is the ultimate American hero. All soldiers and alike should learn from his commitment. He died for his soldiers like a true leader. That island wouldn't have been taken if it wasn't for him. He deserved 2 MOH.

Iwo Jima was one of the defining battles that convinced the US that invading mainland Japan would be too costly.
An American Educated General, Kuribayashi fortified almost every single foot of the island; Tunneling his soldiers deep into Mount Suribachi and across the entire area. The Volcanic Sand was so hot when you dug down that some recounted being able to heat their rations at the bottom of their fighting hole. The Japanese fought for every inch, even leading a massive Banzai charge at the end that nearly dislodged the unprepared unit they attacked. Of a garrison of roughly 20,000, only about 200 Japanese actually surrendered and were taken prisoner.

War is hell! To me the Pacific war was the most brutal. The German soldier was not trained in the fanatical mindset of the Japanese soldier, where one did not disgrace themselves and their family by surrender. This alone made the combat so much more brutal and the horrors these men faced so much more intense. You can see this in the diferences of how the U.S. combatants fought their enemy.

@1:40 "Can you imagine that? having to re-live it over and over?" Every suriving Medal of Honor and Victoria Cross "VC" (highest British galantry medal) has always had to re-live it because they have been pressed over and over by the public and publishers, news, and authors for the story over and over. One VC recipient, Bill Speakman, single handed fended off over 1000 Chinese attackers with all sorts of various weapons and grenades, even resorting to hurling empty food cans and glass bottles to scare the enemy into retreating, because he was the sole survivor of his unit to defend a major position. After getting the VC all he could reflect in the days and years to come after people kept hounding him to know what happened he said it made him feel like " A freak in a freak show". Having lost all his friends and being bothered to re-account it all.
@15:00 there are dozens of first hand account documentaries with interviews all over youtube and thousands of books of first hand accounts. As a Historian (BA & MA) I highly recommend "With the Old Breed" BY Eugene Sledge (Best rendition of first hand accounts) and "Semper Fi, Mac" by Henry Berry. Robert Lecky also published a detailed account of his war in "My helmet for my Pillow". The books by Eugene and Lecky along with the troves of accounts recorded by John Basilone, his family, and Nina were used in writing and producing "The Pacific". If you want to honor those men who fought in the Pacific, I highly recommend reading these first.
Dig deep, finish strong, these ARE stories that need to be told and above all Remembered. Thank you.

Robert Leckie "A helemt for My Pillow" Eugene Sledge "With the Old Breed" the books that were used as the basis for the Pacific. it is hard to watch and think that people did these things to each other on such a large scale. but to sugar coat the reality is a disservice. that being said I respect and understand the desire to read about it as opposed to watching it. Thank you for sticking it out and being true to yourselves. It is what makes this type of process matter. cheers

There's an interesting detail in here that got a little glazed over. When Basilone reports to the post, he is saluted by the sentry, and he looks surprised to be saluted. Basilone is an enlisted man, and enlisted do not receive salutes, UNLESS they are Medal Of Honor recipients. For an enlisted man, it must have felt so weird to be saluted by everyone, including officers who outrank him.

    A few things to add:
    1. Lena never re-married. When asked why, she said "I've already had the best", and she also christened the ship named after John.
    2. John Basilone died day 1 on Iwo, and word spread around the island to all marines he had got hit. It was a big blow to morale. This battle would rage on for 30+ more days (Letters from Iwo Jima and Flags of our Fathers are good films on this particular battle).
    3. Okinawa is going to destroy you girls, but also it is very good to see these things with our own eyes. Most of time we get pictures or just book/stories on ww2 and everyone can visualize what happened for themselves. But when you have media on the screen actually potraying it how it was, it leaves a lasting image and impression on you that youll never forget. Thats why I think its important to watch these, no matter how difficult it can get

I think you would get a lot out of watching Ken Burns' documentary series about World War II titled "The War." He tells the stories of people from four American towns, and there's a lot of screen time interviewing the veterans as they were when he filmed it. It's a documentary that flows like this kind of story, and I think it's even better than his Civil War docuseries. His "The Vietnam War" is also a masterpiece.

As a kid, I had an assignment where I got to pick my own topic to cover for an essay. I chose to do it on the second world war after having seen Saving Private Ryan and it led me down a rabbit hole for life where I would simply begin to absorb anything related to the topic and the time period. It began as a fascination, but as I matured I came to feel it was important to really understand the era as it was the most destructive period of human history. 75 million lives lost in the span of just under a decade. The majority of those being innocents and civilians, and all brought about by petty and ultimately stupid notions of things such as racial superiority, fascist zeal, and imperialistic zealotry.
In that I am glad that people like Spielberg and Tom Hanks have devoted so much time and effort towards recreations such as The Pacific, but we really must do more to truly educate and inform people about the sorts of things that caused the events portrayed in these series, because the sentiments which stirred such tragedy are still very much so alive in peoples minds today.
