CGI ruined the creativity of film makers. You don't get the sensation of something actually being there anymore. Take the ending chase from Terminator 1 for example. Heart-pounding stuff. Trick shots like in this scene are much better. :)

Fun Fact: The falling bookcase was unintentional. It's not know if it fell by itself or if it was caused by disturbance from the crew. The lines are ad-libbed and the scene was left in as an additional element of mystery for the ghost.

• @indigopath2598
@indigopath2598 Před 6 lety +9

You can tell Bill was desperately trying to think of a decent line and looking for Dan Aykroyd to give him a prompt. In the end neither could think of something so Dan left it to Murray to ab-lib with what he had :P. It's great all three actors stayed in character and then tried together to tie the accident into the film.

• @LextheRobot
@LextheRobot Před 6 lety +2

From a Fun 'Fact' to a less fun truth... the falling bookshelf was in the script to begin with. But the symmetrically stacked tower of books was an idea that director Ivan Reitman had on the way to the set that morning (shot in the basement of a library in LA), and the scene where Venkman first encounters ectoplasm was also added to the scripted scenes as well. This is all detailed on page 28 of the 1985 book Making Ghostbusters by Don Shay, in the margin notes of the script page which details the crashing bookcase. A PDF version can be found at the website SpookCentral. www.theraffon.net/~spookcentral/gb1_book_makinggb.pdf

Elmer Bernstein wrote such great music for this scene, as well as the rest of the movie! It's a shame that his score for Ghostbusters often gets overlooked because the Ray Parker Jr. theme was so popular...Would not have been the same great film without Elmer's contribution.

"Couldn't have scripted it better".... except it was clearly described in the October 7 1983 final shooting script, which has been in print as part of the book Making Ghostbusters by Don Shay, since 1985. Here's an except from upstairs until they see the ghost for themselves. Notice the ironic part? The symmetrical book stacking and Venkman encountering ectoplasm WERE on-set improvisations thought up by Reitman and the cast, but the falling bookcase was a planned stunt specified in the script:
VENKMAN
(snaps)
Back off, man! I'm a scientist!
THE DOOR
Spengler sticks his head in.
SPENGLER
(excited)
It's moving!
Stantz and Venkman rush out.
INT. DEEP IN THE STACKS -- DAY
They come slowly down the dark aisle with Spengler leading, taking
constant readings. Their faces are lit mainly by the light of their own
monitoring and recording equipment.
HIGH POV
Looking down on them from the spectral point of view.
A SPIRAL STAIRCASE
One by one, Venkman, Stantz and Spengler come down the tightly winding,
old iron staircase. They are scared. Books are strewn all over the
floor.
A BOOKSHELF
The books start to slide forward then the whole shelving unit topples over
and almost crushes the team under a ton of books. They jump to safety.
VENKMAN
Nice.
(out loud)
Hello...
Spengler looks at his meters and silently points at a dark aisle
intersecting the one they're in. The team inches toward it.
SPENGLER
It's here.

The small screen does not do this justice, and this was a kid's movie at a time that effects like this were state of the art. On a big screen, with that build-up, to a kid, this was unbelievably terrifying. What an awesome scene. I still remember having a serious conniption! Also, the filmmakers' craft here was great. They cut immediately to slapstick comedy after the ghost reveal, so that in a theater, you can barely remember what you just saw, and you feel totally whipsawed emotionally. It set the tone for the whole rest of the film: you felt like something terrifying might happen at any moment, but that it would be very brief, which meant both that you could survive it (you wouldn't be too scared for too long) but you needed to pay very close attention so you wouldn't miss details. Very good film making.

Since Ray asked Egon what they should do, Egon was probably trying to get information on the next clue from the P.K.E. Meter on how they should handle the ghost, and Peter's knocked it out of his hand saying "stop that" as a way of saying "let me decide." Probably since Peter acted that way, both Ray and Egon were going to make Peter talk to the ghost himself where as soon as they looked at him from 2:52-2:53 was like they were saying "you are the one who pulled us back wondering what to do, so you talk to the ghost."

1:35 what makes the part special with
The book case falling over it was actually not in the script a few crew members knock it over and the line Peter said to Ray and Ray shaking his head was all ad-libs they kept the scene in because it added an extra element of mystery to the atmosphere as to whether it was a natural occurrence, or a malicious act on the part of the ghost for which the soon-to-be Ghostbusters were looking.
