  • Watch the flagship aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth returning to it's homeport in Portsmouth after 4 months of repairs in Rosyth, Scotland. Hundreds lined the shore on a hot summer's evening to see the warship come in after attending a Cowe's Week event on the Isle of Wight.
In February 2024, an issue was discovered with a propeller shaft coupling. Deployment on Exercise Steadfast Defender was cancelled as a result. HMS Prince of Wales stepped up for the training exercise instead, as seen here:

On July 30th, the aircraft carrier returned to His Majesty's Naval Base Portsmouth after being drydocked in Rosyth, Fife, Scotland for 4 months of repairs. This was after HMS Prince of Wales had a separate propeller shaft issue in 2022, requiring HMS Queen Elizabeth to fill in for a deployment to New York back then. The two carrier capability is designed to work in a way that allows the other aircraft carrier to step in when one is unavailable.
During the homecoming, several police boats of the Ministry of Defence Police escorted the Royal Navy vessel into Portsmouth Harbour. The channel was closed for all marine traffic while this movement took place. Tugs from Serco escorted the aircraft carrier under its own steam and provided assistance known as 'indirect towing' as it docked.
