    I'm commenting at 2:30, before I finish the intro to the video, and I wanna say this: imo SoTC works as a game and a literary story equally and synergistically because it is a mythological work. Myth is a public dream and dreams are private myths. This game functions like a dream; like a private myth, where you can sit with it and spend roughly 8 hours engaging with symbolism and personal turmoil with a somewhat satisfying, if not cryptic, ending. Very similar to my own dreams, there's always this lingering feeling of uncanny dread or unease that envelops every aspect of the game. I don't have anything deeper to say, but I got the urge to make these few points. Gonna finish the video now.

    Honestly we don't know for sure if Dormin was going to kill Wander. Dormin clearly says he BORROWED the body of wander. "We borrowed the body of this warrior". It could be argued we don't know what would have happened had Emon not came along. Dormin even warned Wander of Emon approaching. I have always wondered what would have happened had Emon remained locked out the door

    • @charlietheuncreative6737
      @charlietheuncreative6737 Před 4 lety +2

      IVIU-T-3D I believe Dormin was gonna use Wander’s body after he died on his own. He didn’t become consumed by shadows until after he was stabbed through the chest by a sword and then pulled that sword out. For all we know, Emon could’ve been quickening Dormin’s return in his attempts to stop it.

    Making comparisons to The Bible has it's place when discussing this game. After-all, the game does deal with God-like characters, demons, spirits. As for the baby, it's more of a creation than a virgin birth. Which also goes back to a biblical story. All 3 games by Fumito Ueda make you think & are given to various interpretations. That's part of what makes them masterpieces & works of art. And that music!!!

    • @gameoverture
      @gameoverture  Před 5 lety +7

      Yeah, I think the imagery is pretty reminiscent of biblical texts. What I meant to say in the video is that this connection to the Bible does'nt really inform my personal interpretations of the game in a particularly meaningful, but that's just me. I think it's pretty fair for anyone to base their interpretations on these aspects though!

    I don`t know what to say... your analysis is just amazing. Your channel is just begnining, but you started very well. You`ve made a complete (or almost complete) analysis of a game that is very, very hard to create a rational point because we can`t propose anything. Shadow of the Colossus is that kind of game you just feel. If you interprate something, you`re free to do that, but in essence is a game you must feel. I really enjoyed your video and your channel. You put all the necessary points to understand and your logic is very profound. You were able to mix Philosophy, Religion and Mythology in a great way. Focusing on the world setting instead of focusing on single character (Yes Fumito succeeded in achieving such for ICO and SOTC. i know nobodies reading this. buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut.
    this is the answers i came up with:
    there is no villain in this story. wander is a young boy (this is best seen in the new game where he looks like a 15 year old). in some tribes, boys are considered men at the age of 14. but being considered a man doesnt mean being considered an adult. if we look at some amazon tribes or african tribes, we see a structure of adolence, some would say a hierarchy, alike this
    eldest
    elder
    older
    adult
    man/woman
    boy/girl
    infant
    this structure has differences here and there. but considering other theories that are too long to mention here. i like to believe that wander is between the age of 15 and 20. hed be considered a man. even though 20 is far too young to be considered a man (your brain does not stop maturing until 25, and is never fully developed. this is why 20 year olds are really immature even though technically being adults. because realistically, they arent.) his attire represents that of eimon, but hes got no skill in swordfighting. but, neither does lord eimon, really. we know that he has guards. why would a strong warrior require a bunch of guards including ones with ranged weaponry? the simple answer is, eimon is no warrior, hes a lord. a religious ruler? maybe. maybe hes an elder. we see that hes quite old. eimon could be the father or even grandfather of wander.
    wander, even though being quite young. is well versed on the forbidden land and the ones who reside within it. after all, do you really believe that the average 15 year old would know enough about the forbidden land to know exactly what weapon he requires, exactly what path to follow and exactly how to use his sword? let stand even know that dormin can resurect people? maybe that part is common knowledge, but still. and why does wander have access to a sacred sword anyways? wouldnt only religious leaders or elders have access to it? i like to believe that wander is the grandson of lord eimon. lord eimon is a religious leader and a village elder. and wander is being trained to be a religious leader too. hes very respected and has access to loads of information. the girl who was sacrificed was someone important too. wander being very respected had ties with her. we dont know if theyre lovers, friends, or even brother and sister. i like to believe the latter, as my brother used to protect me from my drunken dad when i was little. it helps me connect to wander and mono.
    the death of mono was too much for wander to bear at such a young age combined with the knowledge that he could change this back. he grabbed his horse. hes a respected member, hed have a white crested black horse of course (white crested black horses are very rare. and so are white horses. this could be proof that wander was respected) his horse is too big for him. a horse is something you have for your life. its not hard to believe that wander is still young and he means to use this horse in the future. definitely if you compare wanders height to other humans in game.
    dormin isnt evil. but neither is he good. dormin is focused on the prosperity of himself. he cares little for others. but he does not mean to make bad ties. so when he makes a promises, he keeps his promise. dormin said he is borrowing wanders body. he never said hes taking it. perhaps dormin had some business left undone and only meant to use wanders body until said was done. though, thats a bit of a stretch. perhaps dormin pushed wander out of his the darkness that is the own body of dormin to protect wander from being sealed away. doing this may have caused wander to be partially fused with dormin, explaining the horns. dormin never meant to do wrong upon anyone. they simply meant to live their life and fulfill their own needs and wants.
    but perhaps dormin was worshiped a long time ago. and the worship got to their head. because of this dormin might have done bad things. or even worse. dormins compassion for others may have driven him to break the law of mortals time and time again and again. and this may have enraged the religious leaders. not because they do not want to see their loved ones back. but because it meddles with powers even dormin cant understand. this explenation is the one i like the most.
    in conclusion. there is no villain. wander is misled by his sorrow and loss. this leads him to, with all determination and with every cell in his body, on a quest to safe mono. hes only a boy. and as we scientifically know (this is actual fact) people under the age of 24 often dont have a real understanding or perception of reality, danger and reason. even if they think they do. wander was simply misguided and it led him to do things he shouldnt have done. lord eimon is wanders father. he shows pitty, possibly even sadness, at the end after wanders death. and he lets out a prayer for wander to attone for his sins. lord eimon did what had to be done. not because he wanted to. but because he had to. he knew that dormin meant no harm, but he knew that dormin would do harm in trying to do good. and he never meant to end wanders life. but there was no other way to go about it. and dormin? he simply wanted to have a body again. he simply wanted to be free again. and as he laid eyes on lord eimon and saw his attire and mask. he realized lord eimon was gonna seal him away again. this drove him to fear. he tried stopping them by smashing the ground next to them so theyd trip. but he never killed them. he didnt want to be a murderer and proof lord eimon right. as all wraps up. this is a tale of a tragic godlike being whos denied his freedom for the better of the world. the tale of a young boy being misguided out of sorrow and loss. and a man who has to execute the law even if it brings him pain. because thats whats good for all who art mortal.

  • @badstylecherry7255
    @badstylecherry7255 Před 2 lety

    Personally I read this game as Wander doing shadow work. The fact that the dark shadowy figure is named after a Biblical hunter and that Mono appears as an archetypal woman really convince me of this. The ancient sword is perhaps Wander bringing the unconscious contents into his consciousness and overcoming them, by embracing his latent violent potential and integrating it into himself. However, Ueda and his team always strove towards minimalism so an archetypal reading is probably not really saying much, provided you believe in archetypes.
    I see a lot of Kubrick in this too. I felt it was similar to 2001: A Space Odyssey, with a cruel murder leading to an ascended rebirth.

    I think Wander is a tragic hero, it is wrong to murder creatures, but you can see for each colossus arena, there are viewing areas. I think the ancient civilization would hold games of some sort and have challengers fight the colossi for some price given by Dormin.
    Each colossus has a pattern to be able to reach their vital points, and they all have weapons. I think that the colossi were made to kill and be killed, made by the ancient people.

  • @JezzmanGAMES
    @JezzmanGAMES Před 3 lety +1

    Good video. I always thought there was too much vagueness in SoTC. There's just so many unanswered questions. How were the colossi made? Is Emon a clan leader or a religious person? Who found out about the power to grant a wish? Who built the structures in the Forbidden Lands? What purpose did they serve? And what about the temple & the 16 statues? It suggests the colossi were already there, when these structures were built. Perhaps they were even worshipped?
    I think the game could've used a few more cutscenes with a bit more exposition. But it's as they say: the unanswered question stays with us the longest. Part of why we're still talking about this game today.

    Worst thing about it is contradictory design, to make it more accessible to everyone i assume, by making falling off the colossai have no consequences pretty much.Regenorting health, takes away meaning from your mistakes. Colossai are to slow and dumb to punish you when your at low health, most of them anyway. Everything about it tries it hardest to make you feel small, the incredible force behind the creatures, But when your playing, you have basically superpowers. Being able to be stepped on, Unless your playing on hard, which i recommend

    • @gameoverture
      @gameoverture  Před 5 lety +6

      I understand your point, but personally I feel like falling is usually already frustrating enough without having to endure a game over screen. In terms of contradictory design, the way I see it, Wander is meant to feel small, but the role reversal near the end where you play as a 'colossus' shows how the odds where stacked in his favor all along. It kind of adds to his 'villainous' nature, in my opinion.

      In my opinion, your first playthrough is the best one. After you killed all colossi, 80% of the game is stuck in your head forever. I recently replayed the game (remake) & apart from getting a lost a couple of times, i flew through the normal & hard campaigns without dying.
      I still had flashbacks to how much I struggled on some colossi (like #3, beardguy, #15,...). But now it will forever be a piece of cake. Even the time trials went much faster this time, because I already mastered those on the PS3 version.
